JoPa Goes Down! (October 16, 2006)

Michigan Wins!
Tigers Win!
Lions Win!
Sparty - Yeah, right......You know how this tune goes.......

BCS Polls:

1. OSU
2. USC
3. Michigan
4. ....Well, does it really matter?
(And thank God we're not number 2 in this poll....I know, the AP has us number 2 - but I don't want it......KISS OF DEATH has claimed the Domers, the Longhorns, the Auburn Tigers, and now the Gators..)

But first things first. How about them Wolverines? They did what they wanted to do and got out of Happy "Death" Valley with the W. The scene of Joe Pa watching Chad Henne and saying to himself, "What if?" while his starting quarterback, Anthony Morelli, was sitting on the sideline trying to remember what game he was playing after being PLANTED by Alan Branch. (Note to Sparty and any Illini reading this - Plant QUARTERBACKS - not flags....) PSU's offense never knew what hit them. I would be interested in asking PSU who's defense is better - Michigan's or the Buckeye's - but I think I know what they would say.....You know, last year, as Kirk Herbstreit said during the game, some people were unfairly getting on Chad Henne, with all the injuries Michigan had sustained.... Kirk stated that before it was all said and done, Chad would be one of the best QB's that ever attended Michigan....I think he might be right. Brady was great, the 1997 National Champions don't win the title without Griese (go away you Woodson People - I don't want to have this argument again) and Chad is certainly living up to the expecetation of a great Michigan QB. Don't lose the game and deliver when you must.

When it was all said and done, with the exception of a long screen to Hunt, Michigan's D has come of age. Only 186 total offense for the Lions.....still only 228 YARDS OF RUSHING GIVEN UP ALL SEASON....Still think you can rush on the Wolverines.....NOT!!!!! The offense could still work on putting more points on the board, but I think the PSU defense was pretty stingy as well. And I am not sure Lloyd was calling all the plays he normally would with the absence of Manningham...

Next Test: IOWA comes to town for one of the last major BIG GAMES. I hate the Blackbirds... ( I need a nickname for these guys and I am looking for suggestions - KEEP IT CLEAN, PEOPLE! -This is a family column.). It seems like they play us extremely tough at home or on the road. We need to be ready for them as a victory puts them higher in the polls looking for a better bowl slot..... They just lost to Indiana. Can't figure that one out. Maybe Ferentz made the mistake of looking forward to Michigan and not having his team ready to play Indiana..... Which is now getting better with their coach stating the Indiana team is a "rocket ship" taking off......I guess we need to have the Wolverine ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missle) Defense go in there and hopefully shut them down. Of course, the Wildcats and Ball State are in there, also, and they are all Big Games until the SHOWDOWN on November 18th....Oh man - suspense will be building by that time.....

So, Sparty.....Explain to me how, by the end of the game, there was only RED in your stadium and they were doing the O-H-I-O cheer so loud that you could hear it on the TV???? (Yes - I will admit to flipping back and forth between the Tigers and the collapse of Sparty) That's support. What happened - did all the liquor stores run out of booze and you couldn't hang around to stomach the whole thing to the end??? Which, I know when the Suckeyes come to town, that can be a problem with the visiting fans raiding the hooch houses and all, but still.... I would have thought you would have stayed and at least not let the visiting crowd move down close to the field in your empty seats.....For shame. I am sure if Ron Mason was there (and hadn't left yet or drank himself silly, either) that little display might be the final nail in the John "Losing to Michigan and OSU four straight years 0-8" Smith coffin.....So, is Mariucci available?

The rest of the day:

We already talked about Iowa losing to Indiana - some pissed off Hawkeyes looking for revenge will be coming to Ann Arbor -

GATORLAND - Well, UrbanLegend couldn't pull out the middle victory in the October Month of Terror...... It's a shame too, because you owned Auburn in the first half and Auburn didn't score a Touchdown on OFFENSE.... What the hell....How does that happen? (yes GatorFan, you read that right) and Georgia now looks incredibly beatable after losing at home to Vanderbilt.......... I was surprised to see the Tigers come out that fired up in the 2nd half. The Tebow cries are probably going to get a lot louder now as well.....I feel for Chris Leak as I think he is a good QB and is still the key to Florida getting to the National Championship - I haven't given up on you yet (Remember my pre-season prediction) You just need to win out with Georgia, Vandy, GameCocks, West Carolina and FSU and get to the Championship Game and get another shot- the BCS still has you 6th.....and you also need some help.....But things are really screwed up in the SEC now....
HUSKER NATION - I can't believe you guys are still 6-1.....Kinda makes you wish you would have passed more against USC, doesn't it?
VANDERBILT upsets Georgia - way to Go Commodores - keep winning and get Michigan's strength of schedule up there.
OKLAHOMA - Who or what did Stoops piss off or piss on? Did he quit going to church? Think about this for a minute - OU loses their starting QB before the season starts, they get JOBBED in Oregon on a terrible on sides kick call by Pac 10 officials, and then Peterson breaks his collarbone and is gone for the season....Talk about a run of bad luck....
VA TECH - I guess you guys are all done, eh? 2 losses in the ACC doesn't bode well for making it to the Championship game, which you probably would have lost anyway......
MIAMI - Classy - start a midfield brawl in the 4th quarter after showing up a team that is 0-7....Do you clowns take lessons from Sparty or vice-versa? In my book- you are both LOSERS....Is Coker still coach - I think Coker and Smith will be in the same Soup Line come December....
FSU - still not in the top 25 and sinking fast....How long will the Seminole faithful stay behind B. Bowden......I see losses coming to Wake Forest, BC, and the Gators.....
ISU - you guys are in the tank scrambling for a bowl bid........sorry.....

This Week
Tennessee - Alabama - Alabama could screw things up even more in the SEC with a win...
Indiana at OSU - We will get a glimpse of the "Rocket Ship" that is Indiana.....
IOWA at Michigan -TAILGATE CROWD - WE ARE GOING TO NEED EXTRA "BIG GAME" FOR THIS ONE!!!!!!...
Georgia Tech at Clemson - Clash of ACC Titans.....(Hey Va Tech - weren't you supposed to be one of the best teams in this league?)
