BCS Mess (10-15-07)

You know, anyone who doesn't watch the 12 week playoff that is College Football is really missing something....This season is going to make a lot of the bowls seem anticlimatic, to say the least, and if there was EVER an argument for an 8 or 16 team play-off, this would be the year....But more on that in a second...

(After reading this, I just had to put it first....It's high time for history to change)
Folks, I was a big opponent of a 1A play-off when it was first proposed, but THIS FAN BELIEVES IT'S HIGH TIME FOR A 1A COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF....The regular season games will still mean a lot, if not more than usual, and you have to win your conference to have an automatic bid, or win your division championship game to get in....The Big Ten and Pac 10 needs to add a team and two teams, respectively - DAMN YOU DOMERS - JEEZ I HATE THESE GUYS! (Sorry Pope, I just had to say it to get it off my chest) that won't be the Domers and go to a division championship.. that would make 12 automatic bids of the so-called "SUPER CONFERENCES" Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12, PAC 10 and combine the Weak East and C-USA..... AND NO MORE PRESEASON CRAP AGAINST DIVISION 1AA or anyone else.... EVERYONE PLAYS EVERYONE IN THEIR CONFERENCE ONLY. So, in a 12 team conference you would have an 11 game season, everyone plays everyone (AND SEASON TICKET HOLDERS DON'T GET STUCK WATCHING AN EASTERN GAME IN OCTOBER)...Let the next 4 ranked teams that are not already in that equation into the Play-Off and seed them accordingly. You play at the home of the team with the better record. That's it. In 5 weeks, you will crown the champion....About the same amount of time that usually transpires after the last season game. All the games end on Thanksgiving weekend.....Then, you will get all of December for games and end up with your January Bowl for the Championship. You can still qualify for Bowls like you did before, and if we lose some of the fleabag bowls, so be it - NO GREAT LOSS TO HAVE TO "PAY" TO GO TO A LESSER BOWL.... And The SEC just might have to travel to the Big House or some other Cold, Barren, PERHAPS SNOWY Place to play a game...Then we'll see who the tough teams are.....

Losses will mean less - assuming of course that you win the Championship Game or have the regular season best Record, and a non-conference loss will be non-existent......

Is there a simpler solution?????? I can't think of one....But I am willing to entertain ideas....

WOLVERINES - the Mighty Maize and Blue came through in what had to be one of the best Offensive and Defensive performances of the year....And having only attended two games this year and only seen the Maize and Blue play 4 games this year- THANKS TO THE BTN (BULL!@#$% TEN NETWORK), I have to say that our overall team speed has really improved or Purdue is just REALLY SLOW....I am thinking it's more of the latter, but maybe the Mighty Machine is getting a little better....Only problem is that with 2 losses, and one being to a 1AA school, it's going to be difficult for the pollsters to rank us higher than any other 2 loss team....Notice the fact that we are still not ranked above the Nittany Kitty Kats (ranked 25) who we beat. We are ranked 26th.......so coaches, along with everyone else, have no respect teams that lose to 1AA rivals.....So, Michigan needs to be ready to play an up and coming Zookie Ilini team that got caught looking ahead.....

SPARTY: Great job beating Indiana, a team you are supposed to beat. Ringer is really running the ball well.....Now, normally, I hold the belief that I want EVERY TEAM THAT MICHIGAN STILL HAS TO PLAY UNDEFEATED WHEN THEY PLAY US....And it will still be fine if you pull a SPARTY and Lose to the Suckeyes....We will get them undefeated at home and when we beat them and deny their conference title, it will really throw a monkey wrench into the BCS....Or, if you do beat them, I want every other 1 loss team out there to get beat....And it's looking feasible....So, either way, I guess I can live with it.....SPARTY - By the Way, did you see that nearly one half of your COLLEGE BASKETBALL games are on the BTN? ISN'T THAT GREAT!!!????!!!!

DOMERS: (Jeez, I hate these guys) Man, you guys really suck....Your Defense scores 7 for you and holds a Boston College Team that had been averaging 30 some points a game to 24 and the Offensive Genius Charlie Weasel can't seem to figure out how to move the ball....You want some advice? Forget about Clausen this year. Start the Michigan Kid for the Defense's sake and try to stay in some games.....Seeing as how you screwed up the 0-Fer dream already.....

LMU: Well, I didn't think I was going to have to get on Les Miles for being an idiot until he was actually coaching Michigan....But I think when your in the second overtime and everyone knows that you have 4 downs to get the first down and expects you to run the ball, THAT A PASS MIGHT WORK IN THAT SITUATION!!!!! Jeeez....If I'm an LMU fan Sunday Morning, I am pretty ticked and looking to kick the guy to the curb....So, Michigan's price tag to get Les might have just dropped a little......LMU still has Auburn and a psychological test with Satan on the schedule....Not to mention Arkansas....So, the price tag for Les may drop more if he stumbles again...but I would still take him...

CAL: The Bears squandered a great opportunity to be ranked #1......Just shows to go ya of how hard it is to win when you are not accustomed to it....

GATORLAND: Urban "Whiner" should start his tirade a little earlier this year if his team manages to win out and beats South Carolina, who's only loss is to LMU.....Hopefully, Urban Legend will get his way, because if that happens, the Crocodiles, who have no business being discussed in a Naitional Championship game, a Play-Off can't be far behind....

CORNSUCKERS: Man oh Man....I didn't know how low a program could go.....Losing to Okie Dokie State on your home turf is bad enough, but getting SHELLED and more or less losing the game in the 1st half has to be new low....If Callahan isn't on the hotseat after Solich got shown the door for after a whole lot more success, I don't know what the world of Nebraska Football is coming to........

HOKIES: Do your job this week....Beat Boston College at Home....Remember, this was a team that everyone picked DEAD LAST in their division of the ACC....So don't let this undefeated record rattle you.....

SATAN NATION: Alabama squeaked by with a win and will keep the ROll TIDE chants alive....Beat the Cremesicles and pull off the not so impossible dream of upsetting LMU at home on november 10th, then he cements his job for at least 2 years.....But he needs to beat Tommy Twotone to really turn the heat down...

So, the BCS Championship Game, based on the 1-2 currently in the BCS Standings, could pit a team from Florida that has only played Division 1A football for 11 years....and they will have qualified for that honor by playing in the Weak East and on top of that, if everything holds true, you will have a SUCKEYE team that will have won a Big Ten Championship in what everyone agrees is the "weakest" of the Big conferences....So, where does that leave the state of college Football? You will have at least 4 tearms (LMU, USC, Boston College, Oklahoma) Screaming that they are the best team, and I can see the argument for two of them right now - LMU and the Laters.....To throw ANOTHER Fly into the ointment, suppose the Suckeyes lose to Michigan at Michigan and end up with one loss and USC loses again, LMU loses again, and somehow someone beats the Stupor Okie Dokies.....(Missouri in the title game, for instance.) Does that mean a 1 loss OSU team that DOESN'T EVEN WIN THEIR CONFERENCE gets a shot at the Title Game, a la Nebraska in 2001?

GAMES OF THE WEEK

MICHIGAN at ZOOKIELAND: Night game, spread offense....My guess is there will be some really loud fans in Champaign as Saturday night football makes it's first appearance....
Boston College goes to HOKIE LAND: I hope this is where the Eagles get brought back to reality....
Tommy Twotone at LMU: Lookout - Tommy and Les are officially tied in the SEC west...and Tommy knows how to win on the road.....LMU better figure out how to keep it going after tripping at Kentucky....
Cremesicles at Satan Nation: If Fullmer wins, he keeps his job...If Satan wins. the Roll Tide Chants may get louder than anyone can Bear.....
RUBBERS AT DOMERS: Normally, a game that means something....But this will be fun to watch the Weasel get beat by a USC team decimated by injury.....

On the Hot Seat:

Callahan....How can he not be? Nebraska, with a 4-3 record, still needs two wins to get a bowl nod....with Texas, Texas A&M, Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado still on the schedule, that's a MIGHTY TALL ORDER....Look for Nebraska's last game of the season to be against Colorado the day after Turkey Day, with Callahan getting the pink slip the Saturday after....
Wanstadt: If I am a Pittsburgh fan, and I am in the Weak East with only 7 other teams, I have to keep asking myself, How can a once proud University not compete in this league? Look for Dave to get the ax or at least get shown that Pitt is serious about winning...
Pete Carrol - is the love affair nearly over? In the what have you done for me lately atmosphere of LA, Pete not making the Championship game two years in a row "with ALL THAT TALENT" may have people asking if the game has passed him by.....Only problem is that there are 100 other 1A schools that would jump on him in a heartbeat, so USC has to realize he's not all that bad....
