How pissed are people in Tennessee? Pissed off
enough to organize and boycott a homecoming game. Vol Fans are taking to Twitter to get people
to not go into Neyland Stadium on Saturday.
And Ann Arbor fans having been through something
very, VERY similar in the last 5 years, I get where Tennessee fans are coming
from. In fact, I was on that same boycott bandwagon
near the end of Hoke & Brandictator, but realized that the people you’re
really hurting are the players. The pain
is real until there isn’t anything left to hurt. Just an empty void that needs a transfusion with SOMETHING, ANYTHING
new. The same ole, same ole will simply
not do.

Speaking of Which
Jimbo Fisher is lucky his buy-out is somewhere in the
neighborhood of $40M. I can’t believe it either, but if there was
ever a time to have a big one, a record of
2-5 with big games remaining on the schedule, well, it’s nice to have a
cushion. The question is: has FSU simply folded on this season? Yes, injuries and FSU is starting a boatload
of freshmen at this point. But FSU shouldn’t be losing games like this with 4 out of the last 5
seasons having top 3 recruiting classes. If you can’t
pull them together…well, I’m not sure it’s that easy to flip a switch next
season. Losing without effort can
carry-over into the off season and subsequently into the following season. Turn around
jobs like the one Kelly has pulled off in South Bend are rare. And the
Domers weren’t that bad, they just needed a couple of coaching changes. Fisher will probably overhaul the staff, but
I’m not sure the same turnaround can happen in Tallahassee.
First CFP Ranking Surprises?
Nope. Kind of
what I figured they’d do. And right now,
it just doesn’t matter. In fact,
according to one website, the probability of
the top 4 winning out COMBINED is less than 1% (And the Domers have the lowest
percentage to win out). So, someone that’s in the top 4 probably won’t
be there in December. Everyone who’s on
the outside looking in (with one loss) has even a LESSER combined probability of winning out. But some
teams will win out and they will be rewarded.
Conferences and teams that are screwed in the order of “Abandon All Hope” to “I can see a
light at the end of the tunnel”:
1.
Pac 12 – Fuggedaboutit – Washington even perfect is a long
way out at #12.
2.
B1G – the suckeyes or Wiscy need to be PERFECT! PSU could slide in similar to last season’s
suckeyes….
3.
Big iiX – Oklahoma or TCU also searching for
perfection. (I see OSU lurking. Perfection potentially gives them a shot)
4.
ACC Surprise – IF Va-Tech wins out, they have a shot.
Let November football begin! Now we just
need some upsets. Big Ones. Bama and
Georgia getting beat would help a whole bunch of people, obviously. I would
like to see some chaos and perhaps some good can come out of all this with respect to putting importance
on and winning Conference Championships.

It would be great for the sport and even better for coaches that make it
to the CFP as you’ll have 4 more chances each season to get there. Make it So.
The Auburn Paradox
Actually, thinking out loud about this, Auburn could really determine the fate of several other teams
(outside of the SEC) based on how they
finish up the season.
Scenario 1. Bama Death Star beats everyone (Auburn and Georgia) and is the only team in from
SEC – Or Georgia beats everyone in
the same scenario. I don’t think we’ll see two SEC teams
in. Just a hunch.
Scenario 2. Auburn Loses
to Georgia. Auburn Beats Bama. Auburn beats Georgia in SEC Title game re-match. Who’s
in from the SEC? Bama as they would have
lost earlier than Georgia with only 1-loss??
Georgia cause they made title game with 1-loss and have 12 wins (to Bama’s
11)? Surely not Auburn with 3-losses?
Scenario 3. Auburn runs
table. Bama (1-loss) and Georgia (2
losses) are probably both
out? And you also have Auburn with 3 QUALITY Victories and 2 losses to ranked teams (Clemson &
LSU). Auburn in?
Early Spreads?
Michigan laying 14.5 seems to be a little on the high side against the Gophers. This has been a close game recently.
PSU only a 12-point favorite over Sparty? That one
really strikes me as odd…and the suckeyes giving 17 on the road at Iowa looks like an easy dog pick…and LSU is a 21-point
DOG against Bama? LOL. The SEC is so tough…

Peters In A Game Sooner?
I think everyone needs to stop and take a deep breath regarding Peters and the game he played against
Rutgers. Read that last word in the last
sentence. Again.
RUTGERS…
Everyone should look like a hero when you play Rutgers. But O’Korn had thrown a pick and fumbled a
snap, so…I dunno’ anymore. But I do know
that Rutgers wouldn’t be
competitive in the MAC. Take everything with a grain of salt at this
point. Better defenses will be ready to test
Peters. I’ll be curious to see how Peters looks Saturday night when the Gophers come to town. That should
be a lot more telling and I’ll let you know how I feel about it then. But if the kid wasn’t ready prior to Saturday,
Harbaugh knew it. I don’t care how bad
the starter looks. Well, actually I do
care, but when you’re not the head coach, you don’t get to make calls like
that.
Emmert Speaks
Emmert finally comes out and speaks about the FBI investigation, the NCAA’s poor handling of the North
Carolina ruling, and some other stuff. Again, I
would take and do this guy’s job SO
MUCH better than he’s doing it.

Emmert cited recent results of
regular public-opinion polling by the NCAA that the association normally keeps
private.
He said the polling showed that among
all Americans:
►79% say big universities put money
ahead of student-athletes.
►69% say big universities are part of
the problem and not part of the solution to problems in college sports.
►51% believe that the NCAA is part of
the problem and not part of the solution to problems in college sports.
Referencing the first finding, Emmert
remarked to the commission: “I can’t think of anything 79% of Americans agree
to, but they agree to that.”
I disagree Mark! I think
if asked, “Do you find Mark Emmert to be one of the largest ass-hats of all
time?” I think most American’s would agree to that, too!
And the committee that was formed by the NCAA to figure what to do next isn’t even going to put the
question of “Amateurism” on the table for an open discussion. TOTAL BS….

Profile Jobs That Could Be Open?
There could be a lot of high profile coaching positions open come December. A lot.
Tennessee – Lately, has been a perpetual revolving door. One bad hire after the next…Would be the 4th coach in 10 Seasons at ole Rocky Top…
Florida – Ditto Gatorland.
I’m not saying McElwain was a terrible hire, but turning Colorado State
around isn’t the same thing as coaching the Gators
Texas A&M – This one is sad because I like Sumlin and think
he could be successful elsewhere, which he probably will. (Maybe
Nebraska???)
Arkansas – Brett couldn’t do at Arkansas what he was
successful doing at Wiscy. Gonna take a Petrino-like
individual (who might be available) and who Jeff Long would never EVER hire….
Mississippi – Have fun with that one.
Nebraska –
Can it ever be like the old days? Or can
the Huskers at least be competitive? And Husker Fans, don’t be sad if Frost Spurns you for another gig. I didn’t
quite understand the Riley move 3
seasons ago when Frost was at Oregon and ready for a head coaching gig at that point –
THAT’S when you should have jumped for Frost.
The bridge may have been burned on one side already…
All these jobs, if you’re successful, could be
considered “Destination Jobs” (maybe not Ole Miss and Arkansas is a
stretch). But you know what I’m saying…Power
5 Jobs at schools that have all had some measure of historical success that
whoever becomes their new coaches, will have to measure up to. And only 1 school
can win a NC each season.
So, do some math, 4 year deals, 6 schools…carry the
one: It would appear that a lot of these schools could be shopping for another coach in 4-5
seasons.
Or do you just hire and stick with a guy if you’re
an AD?

I don’t think I ever came close to even
getting a phone number much less what this guy got on a flight where he met
someone for the first time! But a couple
of questions linger:
1. Aren’t flights pretty much insanely packed now? I mean, how do you expect to pull that off
without being noticed?
2. Did they have some
privacy and they just weren’t fast enough? I mean, at 48, she should know what’s she’s
doing and at 28, speed shouldn’t have been an issue for him!
