That's It - 2017 Is In the Book

Holiday Bowl, anyone?

Yes, I’ve seen the Speight Transfer news…

Yes, I’m still alive and off suicide watch after the debacle in Ann Arbor.

And thinking back, I was literally on Cloud 9 as Michigan jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.  I thought Michigan was right where they wanted to be, could run the ball and chew up clock as the defense seemed to have the suckeyes figured out.  The suckeyes had NEGATIVE YARDAGE coming out of the 1st Quarter.

Then it all went to hell…

I don’t take the losses as hard as I used to.  But there was a definite period of “How can this be happening so often?  Sooner or later the law of averages has to catch up…”
Of course, I’m sure every suckeye fan was thinking that during the Cooper years.  I guess we’re paying for that during this stretch.

13 of the last 14 to the suckeyes?

Hard to stomach…

But if you had told me before the game that Michigan would have the ball on the 50-yard line, down 4 points with 4 minutes left, I’d have taken scenario in a heartbeat.  I honestly would have. And the suckeyes kept giving Michigan chances and even had Barret go down which should have been an advantage.

I don’t know what goes through Harbaugh’s head when Michigan is on offense, but it seemed (to this fan anyway) that Michigan was rushing the ball pretty well.  Higdon and Evans just needed more touches.  And I believe Higdon even said to the sideline, “Feed Me!”

Why Michigan got away from the rush is beyond me.  It seemed that there was a force at work that kept Michigan from doing the “right thing” on Saturday.  And then putting your money on O’Korn just seemed reckless.  Like betting it all on green on the roulette wheel.  What are you thinking?  Did he suddenly become Tom Brady in the last time-out or something?  I normally don’t call kids out as really sucking or costing anyone a game…But O’Korn, you cost Michigan the Game.  I know you cried afterward in the presser.  Suck it up Buttercup.  Michigan Men don’t cry after giving the Game away.  It was fun knowing you, but move along.

I could go on about the Refs, but that seems like it’s a given any more.  I don’t know who said what to the powers that be, but Michigan may forever be condemned to not get a favorable referee call from this point forward.

The suckeyes did not get called for one single hold the entire game.

Not ONE.

And I observed at least two that were no-brainers.  Including the one on Mo Hurst when Barret scampered 20 some yards for a TD.   (Right after Metellus let an interception go right through his hands) Where the F$#%@$#% was that flag?  Mother – F@#$$ers....

Enough on the refs…

Getting back to Speight:  I guess he saw the writing on the wall?  But for it to happen so quickly after the Game, it must have been in process for a while.  I guess when you see Shane Morris lighting it up in Mt. Pleasant, you figure if you want any chance of making it on Sunday, you need to go somewhere to show off what you have.

The Harbaugh offense isn’t easy for QB’s.  You need to have some ability and be able to hit receivers when the time comes (and it helps when they catch the F@#$%ing ball).   And you don’t get as many attempts as you’d like.

But for anyone that thinks this is a “great” thing, just remember this:  Speight will forever hold the record as having the best half of any QB in Michigan Program History against Maryland in 2016.  The highest passer rating ever recorded.  Speight was great in that game.  Not to mention the 2016 Penn State Game…If only you could bottle stuff like that up and keep it around forever.

And for anyone that’s chirping about this “Being on the coaching staff”, you’re idiots.  Coaches can’t throw the ball or catch the ball.  And they certainly can’t make refs throw the flag.  The gameplan was fine.  Everyone just needs to execute.  O’Korn didn’t.  Opportunities were lost…And yeah, I’ve heard all about Harbaugh’s November record.  Screw it.   Harbaugh is going to fix the mess.

 That you can believe in.

So, where to from here?  2018 is shaping up to be even more interesting than we thought.

The Rest of the “Hot” Mess

YHMA You Have My Attention

Auburn:   Two losses to Clemson and at LSU shouldn’t keep you from being #1 on Tuesday night after you’ve beaten 2 number 1 ranked teams on your home turf.  Convincingly.  Georgia is not good and Bama is what everyone (besides Pete Finebaum) thought they were.  An okay team but not a GREAT Team.

TIYFC - Turn In Your Football Cards

Wolverines:  I know I made you turn it in last week, but losing 13 out of the last 14 to the suckeyes is bad. An entire generation has no idea of what it means to beat the suckeyes.  This has to get better soon.

Gophers:  I made you turn in your card last week also, but getting blanked at home by Wiscy?  Seriously?  Maybe the Flecker isn’t who I thought he was.  Should have been a better effort out of that team.

CUD – Complete, Unmitigated Disasters!!!

Miami: Destroying the Domers only gets you so far.  Losing to a team that isn’t even going to travel over the holidays is bad news, especially this late in the season.  You have to win the ACC Championship to have a chance.  Bama could be the option even if you do win the ACC.  There will be a lot of talk about that, guaranteed.

Nebraska:  Well, I guess you can turn the page on the Riley Era.  Firing 9 win coaches hasn’t been a good solution.  Firing losing coaches probably can’t get any worse

WWB – We Won, But…We Should Be Worried

Georgia:  Losing twice to Auburn is probably really gonna’ suck….
And the Rest

FSU vs. Gatorland:  FSU won the Sunshine Bowl and believe it or not, can still qualify for a bowl game with a win this week in the hurricane make-up game against ULM.  But still, two programs that are in a world of hurt right now…

PSU vs. Maryland:  Getting 66 points hung on you is a bad look.  Derkin is a better coach than that, but once the kids give up, well, it’s hard.

The 5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief

  1. Denial and Isolation Georgia.  Fans somehow believe that Auburn on a neutral field will be “easier” to beat…
  2. ANGER –MICHIGAN.  Too damn many have been lost to the suckeyes…
  3. Bargaining –Anyone in the 5-6 spot coming out of this week’s CFP announcement.
  4. Depression:  Domers.  Losing to Stanford and finishing November with a 2-2 record is not good.  Oh, well, I guess that’s Michigan, too.
  5.  Acceptance – Everybody Else.  On to 2018!

Idle Thoughts from Saturday

-Where did the season go?
-It always looks so long from the other end.
-Then, you’re looking at the suckeyes and realize it’s over.
-Good Tailgate crowd!

-Win or lose, still the best part of the day.
-I think I clinched the Can Game for 2017!
-Making every game helps…
-Was surprised with the weather.
-Two most miserable games were in October.
-Saturday was balmy.
-Thanks CK for the extra Ticket
-Here we Go!
-Super!  Get up on these guys early…
-There we go!  Up two TD’s!
-And the suckeyes can’t move the ball!
-Grind it out and wear them down…
-What’s a team have to do to get a call around here?
-I mean, this is the Big House.
-Michigan should be able to get a call.
-Damn!  You have to catch that Metellus!
-HOLDING!!!  RIGHT F@#$%@ing THERE!
-Are you kidding me?
-I hate referees.  Each and every one of them…
-This is coming apart.
-So, there’s a chance.
-Rush the ball, eat up some clock and score.
-WTF….
-Why are you putting O’Korn into this situation?
-WTF!!!
-Great.  It might be over.
-NOW it’s over.
-2018 I’m looking forward to you…
-Don’t let me down

THE MMQ’s “I DON’T NEED A COMMITTEE!”

1.    Auburn/Georgia:  Auburn is #1 this week and deserves a spot even with two losses.
2.    CANES/Clemson – Same here.  ACC champ is in.
3.    Oklahoma – Win and they’re in…
4.    Wiscy/Suckeyes:  B1G Champion is in.  And from what I saw on Saturday, I don’t think the suckeyes can beat Wiscy.

Undefeateds and 1-loss Lurkers:  Bama.  Pete Finebaum will be carrying the “Bama was number 1 all season and deserves to be in as a result” banner all week.  But a 63rd Strength of Schedule will be the Tide’s achilles heal when the committee has to make a decision.  Bama’s best bet:  Hope Auburn beats Georgia and the Suckeyes beat Wiscy.  Which creates an un-holy alliance where Bama fans have to root for Auburn

The Hot Seat

Jeez, this is getting insane.  I’m not sure what the order is, but I think the list is complete.

ZAPPED List

We’ll keep track of who’s gone as the season progresses….

  1. “Holier than Thou” Hugh Freeze
  2. Andersen – Oregon State
  3. Kugler – Texas El Paso
  4. Tyson Summers – Georgia Southern
  5. McElwain – Florida.
  6. Butch Jones – Tennessee
  7. Mora – UCLA.  Was on the ECOD at 4 last week.
  8. Bielema - Arkansas
  9. Riley - Nebraska
  10. Sumlin – Texas A&M
  11. Graham - ASU

The Hot Seat

1.    Beatty – Kansas
2.    Fedora – UNC
3.    Lovie Smith – Illinois hands Indiana first B1G Win
4.    Ruhle – Baylor
Retirement Eminent?
1.     Bill Snyder – K-State.  Gotta’ be thinking about it…
Tennessee Debacle:   Uh, Not So Fast My Friends…
Dumpster Fire Update:  File Under: If you hang around long enough, you begin to see things you haven’t seen before…
In what has to be the weirdest story over the weekend, Tennessee hired than fired former Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano after students, administrators and even some Tennessee politicians protested the announced hiring.  Reason?  Apparently Schiano was outed by fellow assistant coach McQueary from PSU when he was an assistant under Paterno of having knowledge of the Sandusky mess and witnessing Sandusky doing stuff.  Schiano went on record at that point in time stating that he had no knowledge of anything going on with Sandusky, but in today’s “Guilty until proven innocent” world, Schiano’s goose was cooked.  And probably will forever remain cooked for any job out there.  Greg Schiano is a good coach and should have been taken at his word, but now, I really don’t see any chance for him.  Hopefully the suckeyes don’t go down the Tennessee path and get him fired from his assistant position.  Which they could probably do.

With respect to Tennessee, I don’t know who they can possibly hope to hire at this point.  Tennessee is a disaster and your history and coaching resume will need to be squeaky clean.  Meaning you’re probably going to have plenty of offers elsewhere and Tennessee would probably be a pass if you were offered the job.  This job might be open for quite some time…
HIRED!
1.     Mullen – Florida!  The Gators dick-tripped their way into hiring Mullen.  The offered Kelly and Frost who both declinded to get into this mess.  Dan Mullen gets back to his roots in Gatorland.  I have a feeling this relationship will work and Dan will be given a little extra time from the forever patient Florida Fanbase as he works out the character issues that remain on the team.
2.    Luke – Ole Miss.  Why not?  Nobody in their right mind would touch Ole Miss right now.
3.    Kelly – UCLA.  Big Hire for UCLA.  Question is:  Can Kelly make the same kind of magic happen in LA as he did in Oregon?
Speculations???
Going to assume that Frost is going to Nebraska.  If he turned down Florida, what is the other option?  And Nebraska will embrace Frost much like Michigan has embraced Harbaugh.  Look out – the B1G West has some pretty good coaches at this point that might make things very interesting in the forthcoming years…
Another rumored move is Sumlin to ASU.  I don’t know what ASU aspires to be, but I guess they figure they should be winning the Pac 12 South more often.
Arkansas believes they can somehow lure Auburn’s Gus Malzhan away.  I get that he has roots there, but why leave a better opportunity to win the SEC and go to a place where fans are have even nuttier expectations than where you’re at?
It’s going to be a fun couple of weeks!!!
Etc.
Stuff From Twitter…
I know – what was I doing up at 3:00 AM?  Trying to fall back to sleep!!!
