FMQ Week #2

Something I didn’t cover (because frankly, I couldn’t locate a good clip of it) on Monday but I wanted to acknowledge from last weekend is something that can only happen in sports.  ICYMI (That’s: In Case You Missed It) the Nebraska Cornhuskers lined up for their first punt of the game against Fresno State and the punter for Nebraska did not take the field.  The reason:  Former Nebraska and Michigan State Punters Sam Foltz and Mike Sadler died in a tragic car accident earlier this summer.  Watch the clip (or no need if you saw on ESPN or BTN coverage:

A classy tribute and fan acknowledgement.  An even classier move was Fresno State declining the penalty.  Tell me again that sports don’t matter and I’ll ask you when you’ve ever got that kind of feeling sitting in a classroom or in an office or any walk of life, for that matter.  Doesn’t happen that often…I expect something similar from Sparty during a big game….

Controversy of the Week!

I’ve been thinking about adding something like this to the MMQ as it seems like there’s a controversy every week in college football.  This one finally pushed me over the edge and I figured, why not add it to the FMQ!  This COTW has to do with officiating and the murky, grey, and completely foggy, touchy-feely area known as “Targeting”.  As you probably know by now, there was a no-call hit in the Texas-Domer game that looked like this:

B. Kelly went to the ACC head of officials to ask for a review.  The ACC Head of Officiating stated that it should have been called “Targeting”.  The Big XII Head of Officials has spoken and he has stated that it WASN’T Targeting.  I’m not even going to debate about who’s right or wrong in this one.  You can decide for yourself.  The point is that even officials from two different conferences can’t agree on what EXACTLY Targeting is.

Here’s my problem:  Targeting is becoming a hot button issue – and it’s mostly subjective.  I know it was designed and the rule was put into place to protect players.  And I do think that when it’s called, for the most part, the refs get it right.  And if the refs on the field miss it, the booth has the right to call it after they see the replay.  But here’s the thing:  Why are kids getting ejected and made out to be the lowliest of criminals when this happens?  They’re playing at full speed and have been taught to hit hard from an early age.  IF targeting is called, the player is out of the game and the entire TEAM is penalized because of that ejection.   And the player has to sit for the 1st half of the next game as well.  I say BS.  Enough is enough.  Here’s what needs to happen:  Eliminate the ejection for the first offense, make it a personal foul and 15 yards and THEN if the same player gets a 2nd Targeting call in the same game, THEN you are ejected and have to sit the following game.  The rule as it stands is too severe and needs to be modified.  Hence refs may be hesitant to call it knowing a kid might get bounced.

IF you want to eject someone and have them sit for a game, eject LSU’s Boutte and the this USC Player for his rendition of the nutcracker….

Knee-Jerks!

Based on some of the outcomes from last week, ESPN did a bit on kneejerk reactions to certain teams’ performances.  I thought I would do my own here after having a few days to digest everything and hearing some of the overreaction discussion on talk radio and TV.  Because after all,

Knee-Jerk Reactions are what the MMQ does best!

Texas is back!  My take:  Overreaction.  It’s a long, LONG, LONGHORN season.  And these are still the Longhorns….Kelly coached the Domers right out of winning that game.  I think Charlie Strong knows he’s still very much in peril and needs every win he can get.  If Texas makes the Red River Shootout undefeated, I’ll revise my position.

SEC is overrated.  My Take:  Justified.  Many people are defending the SEC stating that the level of competition they played was more difficult. The MMQ has prepared a deep, thought provoking statement for those individuals:   PFFFFT!!!!  If this would have been the B1G losing 7 GAMES to some of the teams that the SEC lost to, the press (and Paul Finebaum – How does he get his head so SHINY!!!)
would have already given the last rites ritual, completed the burial and have the headstones erected for the B1G conference.  However, I like to see how teams bounce back from adversity, so, while you could argue this is slight overreaction, for now I’ll stand on justified.  The SEC is Alabama and everybody else….

Domer fans believe that the Domers are heading for a 9-3 season-or worse!  My Take:  Maybe.  Listen to your coach and Tap the Brakes, Domer Fans!  After taking in a replay of the 2nd half of the Domer game, I firmly believe their defense will get better.  And as long as Kiser is the only QB taking the field for the foreseeable future, I think the Domers will be fine.  Meaning that 10 wins is the floor.  But with Stanford and Sparty on the schedule (and USC is bound to get better), not to mention ACC opponent Miami, well, again, 9-3 is a maybe.

Michigan is a CFP Team!  My Take:  Overreaction.  I know, I know….But this is The FMQ talking and NOT The MMQ.   The FMQ is the way more RATIONAL of the two personas that call my small cranial cavity home.  As the readers of this drivel, you should really know who you’re reading at any given time!  Hawaii was a team of walking Zombies after 20,000 miles of air travel in a little over a weeks time.  That being said, we have this thing called a “season” where we get to see all the games played.  Nobody knows how good anyone is until everyone plays each other (with the exception of Alabama which Finebaum has anointed as a college team that could play in the NFL and succeed).  Things will sort themselves out soon enough.  But again, I (FMQ) have Michigan going at least 10-2 or 11-1.  So there!

The Seminoles have a Heisman QB on their hands in Dondre Francois!  My Take:  Overreaction.  Yes, that is one Cool F@#$!ing name (add him to the all name team right now!), but Heisman trophy talk after one game where the QB was forced to throw a whole bunch to get the team back in the game?  Cumon!!  We know he’s not going to have 419 yards in every game and he’ll have a stinker sooner or later.   If they awarded the Heisman in September, Denard Robinson would have won 3 of them.  Let’s see where Francois is in November.

Any Power 5 team with 1 loss is out of the CFP discussion.  My Take:  Somewhere between Maybe to Overreaction.  Granted, a lot of the teams that lost were never in the discussion to begin with, but the Laters proved last season that you can lose badly to a bad team (Texas) and still make the CFP with one loss.  So just Keep Calm and Play Football.
These things will all sort themselves out.  LSU could win out (doubtful with that offense) and nobody is going to deny them a seat at the CFP table.  Ditto for Ole Miss and even the aforementioned Laters.  But if the Houston Cougars are undefeated…that will make for an interesting discussion.

Houston should be strongly considered for the CFP if they go undefeated!  My Take:  WAY BIG Overreaction.  Granted, making the Laters look silly and having a Kick-6 that went 99.999 yards is nice to have on the ole’ resume, but the non-Power 5 American Conference just isn’t that tough this year.  It’s going to be hard for the Cougars to get style points and their SOS will be absolutely pathetic in comparison to anyone in the Power 5 with one or possibly even two losses that will have played multiple top 10 or top 20 teams.  And Houston still has to win them all…..

The Tom Hermann Sweepstakes have begun at LSU, Ole Miss and other SEC Schools.  My Take:  Probably.  Let’s face it, in the Schools Everyoneknows Cheats Conference, the fan patience, BIG MONEY Booster patience and even the AD and administration patience is quite short.  The Hatter, after receiving a Stay of Execution last season, did NOT do himself any favors losing to Wiscy and could be sent out to the old head coach’s Stud Farm where he and Spurrier get to fight over who will sire the next generation of head coaching lineage by being the first to knock up one of Satan’s daughters….(Too much)?  Hugh Freeze is skating on ultra-thin ice with the NCAA investigation and already has a loss under his belt this season as well.  Not to mention schools like Auburn and Texas A&M might be looking for new solutions at the head coach position.  And let’s not forget that Charlie Strong is also on his last year of grace with the Longhorns. (I know - NOT SEC, but Hermann is right down the road in Houston.  You think Texas wants to let Hermann out of the State?)   IF any of those schools lose more than 2 games before the end of October, then the race for Hermann will be officially on.  But at what Price?

This weekend is going to be a major letdown with respect to watchable games compared to last weekend.  My Take:  Absolutely.  With one exception:  Va Tech vs. Tennessee in the BATTLE AT BRISTOL (MOTOR SPEEDWAY).  I’m not sure whose brain-fart this was – obviously somebody that REALLY, REALLY HATES Michigan being at the top of the largest game in the USA history list.  (And more or less owning the Top 10 games with the largest attendance ever.)  They’ve apparently sold 150,000 tickets and added an additional 4,000 bleachers or VIP seats on the infield because the other seats are too damn far away….In the “End Zone” you’ll be more than two (2!) football field lengths on average away from the action.  Have Fun with that….But they’re gonna’ have beer.  Other than that, bring all the compass point - cupcake schools into the multi Big Stadia for the paycheck.  That’ll give the big boys a chance to fix some stuff on both sides of the ball and pad the stats.  Bristol should be fun to watch (on TV – I wouldn’t want to be there) and a few other games will be worth tuning in.

The FMQ

So, the first week for the FMQ wasn’t so bad.  6-4 on the games and one team didn’t cover that ruined the parlay (Thanks, Oklahoma).  Why, WHY, WHY do I ever trust Oklahoma to do anything?

Anyway, here’s the summary of where the FMQ is at and how we’ll be betting this week.

Weekly Lessons Learned:

Wisconsin could be better than advertised.  Watch them for future low spreads

Oklahoma overrated, but expect a big game out of them in Week #2

Avoid the Gophers for awhile….

FSU looked solid in the 2nd half.  Can they be trusted in the following weeks?

Seasonal Lessons Learned:

Typically, Week #2 is under-achieving, let down, come out flat week.  Meaning Really High Spreads are vulnerable.  1st week game is in the books and teams have an emotional drain during the week #2 Cupcake game.

So, without further ado, let’s make some bets!

Louisville @ Syracuse (+14)

Louisville plastered somebody from some compass point location last week.  Hanging 70 on anybody gets my attention.  Louisville is looking for style points and this spread is beatable for this team.  Syracuse Football is the first thing that pops up when you type in oxymoron…..This does not fall into my Big Spread Game referenced above.

Take Louisville and lay the 14 for $50

Akron @ Wiscy (-24)

This is a tricky spread.  I believe Wiscy is that good.  But is this the Big Emotional Let down game after beating a much higher ranked LSU team? I say yes…..

Take Akron and the 24 for $50

PSU @ Pitt (-6)

PSU is getting points on the road at a major rival.  Some people are claiming that this game is a “Must Win” for Franklin or the loyal PSU Fan Base will begin screaming for his head….I don’t get it??  Have the fans even looked at what Franklin’s dealt with since he arrived?  Lingering JoPa issues, a QB that he inherited that wasn’t all that, recruits being snatched away…Franklin should get at least another 2-3 seasons to try to get past all that.  I’ll take PSU to cover but lose to Pitt in a close game….

Take PSU and the 6 points for $25

Iowa State @ Iowa (-15)

This game is always closer than that and I have a feeling the Cyclones will be up for it.

Take Iowa State and the 15 for $25

Va Tech @ Tennessee in Bristol (-11.5)

Hmmmmmm….Va Tech won their first game decisively against Liberty… I know, So What?  Tennessee struggled against App State and the Vols were probably looking ahead to this game.  Assuming The Cremesicles are as good as advertised and new Coach Fuente has some learning curve to go through in Blacksburg....I dunno.  A big part of me is screaming take the points in this one.

Take Va Tech and the 11.5 points for $25

UCF @ Michigan (-35.5)

I don’t get the half point teaser here on a multi TD spread….somebody feels that 5 plus TD’s of separation is worthy of making somebody think it could go the other way???  Supposed to thunderstorm and rain on and off on Saturday making for difficult conditions… After the pasting that Michigan put on the Rainbows, this is another game that if Michigan’s starters play the entire time, 35.5 should be manageable.  But this is FOR SURE a Big Spread game and I should consider going the other way….Nah….

Take Michigan and lay the 35.5 for $50

Parlay!

3 team parlay pays 6-1

Michigan – Akron – Louisville for $50

The First MMQ of 2016!

It’s here!  It’s here!  The First MMQ of the Season!

The season has begun!  The pomp and circumstance, The Bands and all the pageantry rolled out and accounted for!  The big game Kick-offs for the inaugural weekend!  Some fans are still smiling (Badgers, Seminoles, Longhorns, Cougars!)  and some fans are hiding and dying(Southern Purple Kittys, Rebels, Domers, Laters)!  Some teams are riding the high of 1-0 and other teams are picking themselves up and dusting themselves off as they convince themselves that a 1-loss team can still make the CFP!  Everybody learned something about their team this weekend…

The Question the MMQ wants to answer:  What did Michigan Learn?

Michigan Fans learned the following:  Michigan can rush the ball (against Hawaii) and  Michigan can pass the ball (against Hawaii) for a total of 512 total yards that was pretty balanced.  And Michigan is pretty good on defense only allowing 232 total yards (against Hawaii) and the defense scored twice.

For comparison purposes, I pulled up the box score from the Hawaii-Cal game just to have a looky-see and figure out if there’s anything that could be gleaned.  Keep in mind that a lot of prognosticators have California on a list for PAC12 Darkhorse team of the year….

Hawaii had 234 yards passing and 248 yards rushing for just shy of 500 yards of total offense against Cal.  On Defense, Hawaii gave up 441 yards passing and 189 on the ground to Cal.  Hawaii didn’t score as much as Cal, but that might have been Cal’s defense hanging tough in the red-zone.

In contrast, Michigan defense didn’t let Hawaii get to positive Total Yards until the middle of the 2nd quarter.  And with the defense also scoring twice, the Time of Possession was actually lost to Hawaii.  And a lot of the starters were out before the middle of the 3rd quarter.

And I have no idea if Michigan can Punt or kick a Field Goal…I’m ASSUMING they can buy we didn’t see it on Saturday.

Does all of this mean anything?  Hard to say.  I think Michigan ran a pretty vanilla package on offense because Hawaii wasn’t able to stop much of anything.  And then on Defense, Michigan was able to play some pretty straight up man coverage and Hawaii simply couldn’t break the stranglehold that the corners and linebackers were putting on receivers.  And the Hawaii ground game was non-existent.

I said it last week and I’ll say it again – Give Harbaugh a single week with a game tape and you’re going to have a hard time doing much of anything if you don’t put a wrinkle or two in to disguise what you’re trying to do.

I’ll also say this:  The Wiscy game just got a little more interesting and I’m glad that game is in Ann Arbor.  But the reality is that it might be difficult to figure out how good Michigan is before October 29th.

Bring on the Central Florida Knights!

The Rest of the Mess

Lets’ start right at the top and work our way down.

Satan’s Warriors vs. the Rubbers:  I was interested in this game and it was actually looking like the Rubbers would hang with Satan’s Warriors until the dam broke…and did it ever break.  I believe Bama scored three times in as many minutes to break open a 17 point differential and never looked back…While the rest of the SEC is a mess that even Finebaum can’t sugarcoat (7 SEC teams LOSE in the opening weekend), the Crimson Tide appear to be okay…I’ll pass along more judgment on the SEC in later weeks after we’ve seen what becomes of the early losers, but the OVERRATED term may get used more than once this season when referring to the “Best Conference EVER!”  Only issue I have:  Bama did not look good early.  What if they get better?  Yikes….

Clemson @ Auburn:  Malzhan’s seat didn’t cool off any as it appeared that Tigers of Auburn kind of had the Tigers of Clemson in a place where they could have beat them.  But alas, the Auburn kitty’s simply couldn’t deliver in the end.  Gus’ seat is getting warmer by the minute and he needs a big win SOON to keep the Torch and Pitchfork crowd at bay….

Laters @ Houston:  Normally, I only comment on the games I can watch and seeing as how this game was on at the same time as Michigan-Hawaii, well, I’ll be honest and say I didn’t see it.  But I saw the re-caps and replays.  Ouch Oklahoma.  You had to know that Houston was bringing everything to this game.  Not to mention that the Kick-6 reared its ugly head and you didn’t see it coming and didn’t respond very well.  I won’t say the road is difficult for the Laters at this point, but it certainly didn’t get any easier.  Can Houston plan on a seat in the 4 team CFP?  Look – Lots and LOTS of football left to be played.  When it’s all said and done, I’ll render an opinion on Houston or a Group of 5 school making the CFP.  Let’s not put carts before horses yet!

LSU @ Wiscy at Lambeau Field:  So much for worrying about and penalizing Lambeau Leaps Mr. Mad Hatter!  The Hatter is going to jump up to the very top of the Hot Seat List with his team’s less than inspired performance up in Wisconsin. Not only that, but this CLASSLESS ACT at the end of the gameshould have the Hatter in even more hot water, but SEC fans love this kind ofcrap…

Les made Boutte call Dixon and apologize on Sunday…But just words man…just words…

And all B1G fans can go ahead and add another worry bead to the B1G West and B1G East crossover schedules for teams that have to play Wiscy as they looked mighty impressive in the season opener.  Maybe I was a little too hard on Chryst in my pre-season preview.  Wiscy looks for real, at least to this fan, against what was supposed to be superior SEC talent.

Domers @ Texas:  Hee-hee….HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  I love it when the Domers lose close!  I Really, REALLY do!  The domers head coach should also be moved WAY UP ON THE HOT SEAT for more or less being a complete dolt.  Kiser was the QB that was responsible for 250+ yards of offense while Zaier accounted for 30 something…And yet Kelly couldn’t make up his mind on a starter and kept putting Zaier back in the game!  Hee-heeeee!  For the pure vitriol that Domer Nation has for this clown, visit ndnation and read the boards.  That fan base is PISSED!  Kudos to Strong and Texas, but even he knows that they wrap fish in yesterday’s news and he needs to keep it going this season.

Ole Miss @ FSU:  This game was starting to look ugly early and I was starting to think that maybe Jimbo  simply didn’t have it in him any more…you know, getting a team pumped up for a big game.  Then the Seminoles scored at the end of the half, scored quickly to start the 3rd and really never looked back.  Add Hugh Freeze to the Hot Seat list with this loss and all the other crap that’s going down in the NCAA investigation of Ole Miss.  He might not finish the season.

Furman @ Sparty:  Saw a lot of this game and, frankly, if I was a Sparty fan I’d be nervous.  They didn’t look good.  Looked sloppy at times and didn’t have the same Sparty defiance and attitude as past teams.  I’ll chalk it up to opening game whatever and make a true statement after next week. But Sparty’s schedule early is daunting….

Stanford vs. K-State:  Solid outing by the Cardinal.  Shaw may be the PAC12 conference’s only hope with UCLA, USC and everyone else in the South Losing.   Washington also won, but the CFP party demands excellence.

The 5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief

  1.  Denial and Isolation – Anybody with one loss falls into this category.  This would be the “We looked great, there’s things we need to work on and this loss isn’t going to hurt us in the long run” crowd.  Yes – You know who you are, Domer Fan.  And Domer fan seems to feel even worse than most….And it’s odd because once Kelly just let’s Kiser take the helm, I think a lot of the Domer problems might be solved.

  2. ANGER – Anybody that lost a nail-biter or that got upset on National Television falls into this category.  “Jesus Tap Dancin’ Christ!  How in the Blankety-Blank did we lose

to THAT Team?  They’re not even preseason ranked and we were double digit favorites, fergodsakes!”  Add the LSU Kitties, Domers and Laters into this category as well.
  3.
  4. Bargaining – If you’re already down here….Well, than you weren’t planning on having much of a season to begin with.  I won’t go into names, but any fan supporting a school that was preseason ranked in the bottom of their conference is already bargaining stating things like “maybe we can upset THEM.”

  5. Depression – Again, see Bargaining.

  6. Acceptance – Can’t put anyone here yet!  Still too early in the Season!

Idle Thoughts from Saturday (& Sunday and Monday)!

-I know, I know….I forgot a Pre-Season “Idle Thoughts” section in the Spectacular.

-3 fans mentioned it.  You people really DO read this stuff!

-I missed the pre-season idle thoughts, but how about some game week and first game stuff?

-I love summer, but the heat does get to me more now.

-I love Ann Arbor in the fall….There’s no place I’d rather be.

-From September 1st through Christmas.  I could live here 4 months a year.

-Once January rolls around, I’d be looking for warmer places, though….

-Mentioned at the Tailgate:  What happened to the Ann Arbor Canner Corps?

-They need to hang a help wanted sign up somewhere…

-It’s making the Can Game more difficult than usual…

-AP was way below average for Can Game Points in the home opener!

-Noon Kick-Off however does make scoring more difficult…

-LOTS of people swung by the tailgate!

-Michigan Games have become a great Social Event!

-People I haven’t seen in years mosey by the corner of Hoover and Greene ‘cause they ALL KNOW that’s where the Tailgate Crowd is gonna be!

-Total Tailgate Head Count: 50+ The Core Crowd was 8 but the swing-throughs and the “can we leave our stuff here?” crowd was 40+.

-30+ Years in the same spot.  I started to think about any PLACE or places I go to or have been going to for 31 years on an annual basis.

-You know – Same Time, Same Place kind of thing….

-Besides the house I grew up in…

-It was a tough question.  I couldn’t come up with very many.

-However, someone else said it but I truly believe it:  Michigan Football is the Religion and Saturday is the Holy Day of Obligation! - BU

-And as the Tailgate of the Week Shirt Stated:  “It’s Saturday… It’s Ann Arbor… It’s a BIG GAME!!!”

-Stadium AT CAPACITY for a Labor Day Weekend, Ball (and Boob) sweating game…

-Even the students are mostly on time….Harbaugh affect?

-It’ll be interesting to see if it lasts…

-New Drum Major NAILED IT!  (Doesn’t matter if she’s female – she did it!)

-Fly-over was cool.  They’re always cool.

-Kick-Off and the 2016 season has begun!

-Defense – extraordinary….

-Offense – I was a little concerned when Speight decided to hand Hawaii the ball on the first play from scrimmage.

-Shouldn’t have been.  Speight looked pretty good.

-Jeez – Who ISN’T in the Big House?   Michael Jordan, Charles Woodson, Lamar Woodley, derek Jeter, and more Michigan celebrities….

-Hope Michigan can live up to all this hype!

-Band Half Time Show was classic!  Please – MORE LIKE THAT!

-For those of you that weren’t there – Great use of Video Boards, Coach Harbaugh’s recruiting antics and it was humorous!

-Keep telling yourself this is just Hawaii.

-Hawaii travelled ¾’s of the way around the world in the last two weeks to play football (20,000 miles).

-That’s going to have an impact on anyone at any age.

-This Evans kid looks pretty good, but he had holes the size of a double wide to run though!

-Ergo - Kudos to the offensive line.

-Peppers is going to be something special.

-I almost wished Michigan had opened with someone where the starters would have played the entire game.

The Hot Seat

Week #1’s Hot Seat Mascot is always kind of exciting.  Yes, the Pre-season is also exciting, but the Week #1 is the first time we all get to vote.  And while pretty much everyone worthy makes the HSMP (Hot Seat Mascot Playoffs), I think it’s the Hot Seat Mascots at the beginning that can endure the entire season that are the most fun to watch!  Without further ado, Week #1’s Hot Seat Mascot – Actress Margot Robie!

The Hot Seat

  1. Miles – LSU.  After that un-impressive debut with a Top 5 team, Miles’ seat is gonna be warm this week.  If the Tigers lose any more games in September, The Hatter may not make it through October.  Those are NOT patient fans in Louisiana!
  2. Malzhan  - Auburn.  See LSU.
  3. Stoops – Oklahoma.  Poor Bob can’t catch a break.  Even after making the CFP last season, Hard Core Sooner fans want him GONE
  4. Freeze – Ole Miss.   This isn’t a good start for Hugh and again, see NCAA INVESTIGATION and you’ll have everything you need to know about ole Hugh..
  5. Sumlin – Texas A&M.   He won so cooled off a litte….
  6. Mora – UCLA.  He lost so he’s on the list…
  7. Muschamp  - South Carolina.  See Sumlin.
  8. Kelly – Domers.   So much hate for Kelly out there.  Luckily $warbuck$ loves him.  I think he’ll have a job for life or until Domer fans quit buying tickets.
  9. Whoever’s coaching USC:  That loss hurt.
  10. Jones – Tennessee.  You can’t just squeeze by App State in OT and not expect to make the list….
  11. Hazell  - Purdue
  12. Adazzio  - Boston College
  13. Riley  - Nebraska
  14. Charlie Strong  - Texas.  I’m keeping Charlie on here cause Texas fans are like SEC fans.  What have you done for me lately?

Coaches with desk chairs that are getting warm:

Richt – Miami

Mullen - Miss State

Johnson – Georgia Tech

Side NFL NOTE:  Lions CUT Jake Ruddock after a 3 TD 250+ yard passing performance against Buffalo.  Vikings TRADE to get Sam Bradford from the Eagles.

Which was the dumber move?  Discuss!

First Weekend Friday!

Talk about shattering some dreams quickly!  The Cremesicles and Furry Rodents were BOTH EXPOSED on the first evening of meaningful games and may have everyone scratching their heads about who is good and who isn’t….That’s why they play the games in stadiums and they don’t play them on paper….Both these fan bases will get a special honor and recognition in the Monday edition of the “5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief”.

I, along with the rest of the country didn’t get to see the UT vs App State NEAR reincarnation of “The Horror” of 2007 live but we did see ESPN look ins.  App State goes into the second biggest house and almost pulls off the miracle, again.  And if their coach hadn’t had his head up is own arse in the final minutes (and if they would have made that extra point) there probably wouldn’t have been an OT.

I DID see a lot of the little “m” game and I guess you can say one of two things:  That one’s out of their system as I believe the Gophers did just about everything you can do to try to lose a game (snapping out of the endzone and a game record four (4!) defensive ejections for targeting).  Claeys said afterwards he wasn’t sure that Minnesota had even had one ejection (I can THINK of one that SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED that wasn’t) since the rule was put in place.  OR, secondly and maybe closer to the truth:  The Fuzzy Rodents aren’t that good.  Which way the gophers go will reveal itself as the season moves forward, but sheesh…

It’s funny when football Finally gets here.  The countdowns, the talk, all the stuff leading up to it and suddenly:  BOOM!  There’s games and reality rears its ugly head!

I watched the Cal-Hawaii game last Friday.  Most of it anyway.  I didn’t see anything that made me regret my Michigan to cover the 41 at home pick too much, and Hawaii turned the ball over 5 times against what is supposed to be a rebuilding Cal Bear defense.

That’s not good….for Hawaii.

Hawaii also made public (for whatever reason) a request to see the Michigan scrimmage tape.  The request is so asinine that I can’t believe the Hawaii coaching staff actually made it and I’m not sure what their motivation was for making it (the request).  I can tell you that this was probably the look on Jimmy’s face when he heard they were asking:

Another Newsy type item that I have to comment on, and this can only be filed under one heading:  The “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (WTF) are you THINKING!!!!” by having a Joe Paterno Commemoration day before the Temple Game to recognize the fact that it was exactly 50 years ago that JoPa took the field as a head coach….I wonder if James Franklin was consulted on this?  IF he was, I wonder what his opinion was regarding the question:  “Do you think this is a good idea?  Yes or no?”

Let me ask you something:  Is Temple going to recognize and honor Bill Cosby as well?  Maybe Michigan can bring back Ted Kazinski to Ann Arbor and have him be an honorary captain?  I know JoPa didn’t do the molesting…but furgodsakes HE KNEW ABOUT IT AND DID NOTHING!!!!   Let JoPa and everything associated with the last 40 years go PSU….Let it go and chalk this up as a ….BAD IDEA.

Something else that I’ve been thinking about is the fact that I didn’t really do any deep dives into any potential “Dark Horses” that people don’t see coming in the Power 5 conferences.  So, I’ll make up for that oversight right now!  In no particular order, here goes:

ACC Coastal

I’m not even sure who the favorite is at this point, but I don’t see Duke repeating as the champ.  I believe that a team that might – MIGHT surprise some people and has an outside shot of making the ACC championship is Virginia Tech under former Memphis head coach Justin Fuente.  They just might be something special.   Also watch:  Miami

ACC Atlantic

While they’re not a complete Dark Horse, I do like Louisville to upset either Clemson or FSU.  If they can get past both, look out!

SEC East

The SEC East is the really bad half of the SEC.  And I think everyone kind of has the Cremesicles winning the East this season (maybe not so much now) and some even have the Cremesicles in the CFP.  A good Dark Horse to watch here even though the won the East last year will be Florida.

SEC West

I always go with these guys and sooner or later, BB is going to come through for me!  Arkansas is the perennial pick of dreamers and hopers.  I’ll do it again and say that the Hogs have a punchers chance to win the West.

Big XII

Even though they’re still 10 teams in the BigXII….the Sooners are eveybody’s favorite.  But I’m going to say that even though TCU will be tough, they won’t be as tough as everyone thinks.  Watch out for Burnt Orange Nation, a new offense and a motivated coach…and if they can get past the domers early, well, winning the first one is the hardest, sometimes. Not So Dark Horses for invites to the conference:  Cincinnati and Houston.  Dark Horses:  U-Conn and Memphis.

Pac 12 North

Again, I’m not even sure who the favorite is (Washington’s Huskies perhaps) but a team I’ll be watching with a record setting returning QB is Washingon State.  Coached by the Pirate, Mr. Leach, the Wazoos may surprise some people this season.

Pac 12 South

I guess UCLA is the favorite and my pick of Stanford is a bit of a dark horse pick, but if someone were to really come out of left field it would be Rich Rod and the Wildcats that would surprise some people….just sayin’.

Big West

After that hideous debut, the furry rodents winning it all seems like a long shot now….

Big East

Maryland….who else?

The FMQ

So, the gophers screwed up what had been a perfect record so far.  I’m adding a couple of picks to the list I posted last week as there wasn’t a spread available yet (at least with the service I use) and I was also waiting for hi-jinks, suspensions, arrests, etc.

LSU @ Wiscy (+10)

So much of me wants to take a shot of Wiscy here it’s not even funny.  Especially after seeing the egg that the SEC favorite laid last night on their home field.  Still, the Hatter’s teams seem to start out strong and fade late….Granted, Wiscy was way up last year and handed the game to the Tigers….Revenge at home?

Take Wiscy and the 10 for $25

Ole Miss @ FSU (-4)

Ole Miss has had a lot of NOISE in the background this entire off-season. NCAA investigation that parallels the USC and Miami messes.  USC paid the ultimate price that they’re still recovering from and the U managed to skate on a technicality or that football program might have been wiped clean off the face of the earth.  But I digress….FSU starting a red-shirt QB gave me pause initially, but the last time FSU did that the QB won the Heisman.

Take FSU and lay the 4 for $25
