Week
#1 is in the books and Oh, What a Week it was!
How do you like your Gator???
And if your team didn’t win, well, there’s still a lot of football left to be played. Don’t panic, come in off the ledge and enjoy the season!
And if your team didn’t win, well, there’s still a lot of football left to be played. Don’t panic, come in off the ledge and enjoy the season!
First,
The Bad Stuff:
The game lived up to the billing. NOT!!! Florida either A: Didn’t know they were
playing a B1G-Time opponent in a Big Game on Saturday or B:
Florida just isn’t very good in a very over-hyped SEC. Methinks it’s a little of both…
Final
Score (MMQ Version)
43-3
How’d
I do that????
I took away two TD’s from Florida’s score that were
provided by Florida MVP Speight’s
INT’s.
INT’s.
I added 4 points to the TD that wasn’t that the refs blew
the call on and I added 6 points for the two figgies that were missed after Wild
Thing Nordin was called on to boot after he kicked and made a Michigan
record two 50+ yarders in the same game. (Yes – that’s the Charlie Sheen Haricut
Nordin is sportin’! Claims it’s his
favorite movie and just wants a chance to win a “Big Game” with no time on the
clock! He may get his chance.)
Or, you could argue, the score could look like this:
Michigan 43
Florida
MVP Speight 14
Florida 3
So, yes, I’m a little disappointed in Speight. It seems like in the 35 minutes that Michigan
has the ball on offense, Speight plays okay for 30 of them. Then, he has brain farts that have no logical
or sane explanation for a 3rd year QB. I know you could argue that one of the INT’s
wasn’t his fault, but he’s still responsible for say, 1.5 of them. In fact, I’ll let a loyal reader rant about
Speight’s performance for me this AM. (Gotta
love
doing the MMQ on Tuesday as it gives everyone more time to stew, reflect and
just think about stuff) Via the SuperFan
(with a few corrections):
I HATE Speight; no, not as a person, but
as my QB. In my view, he threw only 2 good balls the entire game. I
blame him for both INTs. Yes, I know that the one hit the receiver in
both hands, but he was 3 feet off the ground and fully extended, trying to grab
a very hard thrown ball from only 15-yards away. The other one was just
inexcusable. Then there is the first long reception, where he threw the
ball so late that the defender came within a millisecond of closing a 15-yard
gap in time to break-up the play. He took sacs where the RB had a 15-yard
cushion as the dump-off option, he lost critical yards near the goal line by
running out of bounds instead of throwing it away, and nearly every good
reception was due to either FANTASTIC wide receiver efforts or HORRIBLE
defense. He looks just like the guy that cost us Eyewa and osu last season.
Couldn’t
agree more. In two
of Michigan’s last 4 losses, Speight has had a pick 6. In fact, he’s thrown more Pick 6’s than any QB that I
can remember in Michigan History.
I’m not going to look it up, but if someone wants to do the research, I’ll
stand corrected.
To everyone that texted and is panicking that Michigan
“Can’t run the ball”, relax. That was
the ONE STRENGTH that Florida had going into this game. If you’ve been paying attention to anything
the talking heads babble on about its that Florida’s front 4 are as good or maybe even
better than Bama’s….So stop worrying about the offensive line and the
rushing attack. They’ll be fine.
Worry
about Speight. He can’t
keep playing that bad if Michigan expects to compete for anything in the post
season.
Now,
the good stuff!!
HOLY
CRAP!!! Does
Michigan have a Great Defense or what?
I saw more formations and blitzes from just about every
position. Florida was mostly guessing as
to what Michigan was going to do next. I
don’t know how many times there was an uncovered Michigan defender in Florida’s
backfield, but it was a lot.
A lot of the “Experts” have recognized that Michigan
could be a very real threat to make the CFP based on the defense that was on
display on Saturday. I saw more
Twitter takes on Michigan’s Defense than just about anything else that happened
on Saturday or over the weekend. Well,
except for that Texas A&M disaster.
Michigan spent more time in Florida’s backfield than
Florida’s running backs and QB’s did. 11
Tackles For Loss? And it’s pretty clear
that what was billed as a “shaky” offensive line for Florida was exactly
that. And this is the SEC East Champion,
folks.
Winnovich!!!
Which really makes me scratch my head as to how they won 9 games last season…
I’m
really glad Harbaugh did an overnight at Nordin’s house and we got that kid. I can’t remember a kicker that long or accurate
since perhaps the Sheik? As in
Ali-Haji?
Anyone?
So special teams may actually become something I look
forward to as a Michigan fan?
Inconceivable!
The
Rest of the Mess
Where
to start?
Let’s start from worst to first! Changing the Rest of the Mess around a
little this season. I’ll still
comment on individual games, but I want to start with which teams and fan-bases
should be selling their season tickets immediately, if they can still get
anything for them.
CUD
– Complete, Unmitigated Disasters!!!
Texas
A&M: If you
stayed up for this game or were flipping back and forth between WVU Va-Tech, you saw one of the greatest comebacks in CFB history. Actually, you didn’t. What you in fact SAW was an Aggie team
that 1. Rushed the ball 4 times in the 4th
quarter with a 34-point lead. 2.
2nd string QB only completed 3 passes on 17 attempts in the 4th
quarter and 3. Was snapping the ball with as much as 20
seconds on the play clock. For UCLA
to score 5 unanswered TD’s in the final 17 minutes, the OTHER TEAM has
to have a complete melt-down on both offense and defense. I thought the Texas upset would be the big
story of the weekend. Wrong. Aggie fans, sell your tickets. Sell them now. There was even a Regent for A&M that’s
calling for the firing of Sumlin.
Things are going to get ugly in College Station if Sumlin doesn’t win at
least 5 in a row.
Texas: The
FMQ Called it, but you’ll hear more from him later in the week. Derk’s Terps went down to the 40 Acres
and proved that hiring a pretty face doesn’t solve all of your team’s
problems. The Short-Horns looked EXACTLY
like the same team they were last season:
Pretty OK on offense, lousy on defense and particularly horrible on
Special Teams. Herman’s post
game presser comment was classic: “I can’t come in here and spread pixie dust
and fix all the problems. It’s going to
take time and a lot of hard work.” Maryland
was shaky in certain aspects of the game that had special team scores and some
pick 6’s, but they absolutely were the better team on the field. I’ll say it again:
Look out for Maryland B1G East!
They aren’t laying down for anyone….
Baylor: Losing to an FCS School is bad. Giving up 500+ yards to an FCS team is worse. But there was a lot of negative Karma out
there for Baylor and another “Christian” school Liberty came in and started the
Ruhle era out with a loss.
Things aren’t going to get any easier for a Baylor team that may slip
back into obscurity…
Florida: Nuff said…Sell those tickets…adding to your
misery, GatorFan, is that your coach apparently likes to bone sharks!
CBOTL
– Come Back Off the Ledge
These are losses that looked bad, but there’s no reason to
panic and sell the season duckets yet.
FSU: You played and lost to the #1
team and lost your Starting QB for the season in the process. But everything is still there for you if you
don’t panic and believe in Jimbo.
Urban Legend took a back-up QB and eventual 3rd string QB to the
CFP Championship in 2015 after losing the first game to Va-Tech, and Va-Tech
wasn’t even ranked. Be Patient Seminoles. Things
aren’t as black as they appear….
NC State: Out Statted the Game Cocks and should have won this game, but SC found ways on Defense to stop the Wolfpack. Still, NC State can accomplish a lot in the ACC and still have a shot at the title. Dorin is not going on my Hot-Seat List, even though a lot of people have him there. NC State has a lot of bad karma it seems…
PGL
– Pretty Good Loss
Purdue: Showed some cajones and class in a very close
loss to what some experts are calling a team that will be around at the end for
an ACC Championship in Louisville. Losing
by a score to last season’s Heisman winner isn’t anything to be ashamed about
and if you can get your QB to not throw a Pick 6, you may have even won that
game.
WVU: Losing to a team that the MMQ has in the ACC
final game isn’t a bad loss. Va-Tech
and Justin Fuentes is starting to come into their own. Go take care of business in the Big
12 West Virginia and everything will be fine.
WMU: The Broncos rowed into LA and gave the Rubbers
of USC everything they could handle.
Sparty should be VERY nervous next week.
This isn’t Bowling Green coming to town.
WWB
– We Won, But…We Should Be Worried
Anyone
in the SEC EAST: The GameCocks were out statted by NC State
and were lucky to eke out a win. The Cremesicles just gave up the MOST
RUSHING YARDS IN CFB History in a victory over Georgia Tech. Georgia
had their hands full with App State AND LOST THEIR STARTING QB heading to
Domerland…. And finally, Kentucky was completely lackluster in win over southern Miss.
USC: Didn’t look good in their season opener. Helton has a lot to fix before heading to
Stanford this week.
UCLA
–
Well, enough said. Mora had his bacon
saved by Rosen and, more than anyone, Sumlin.
This has to be the WORST start of a SEASON in the SEC EVER with
the exception of Bama.
OSU @
Indiana: So the suckeyes had
their fans pulling their hair out of their heads, chests and where ever else
hair grows for 3 quarters last Thursday night…and then the suckeye locomotive
gained some traction and JT proved that he does, in fact, have a throwing
arm. Oh, and about the time this game
was wrapping up, arguably the best pitcher in Tigers history, JV, got traded to
the Houston Astros. Double
whammy.
Bufflao
@ Gophers : PJ
Fleck came out of the gate rowing hard and earned a respectable victory over
Buffalo. I only saw highlights, but the Gophers
looked fairly impressive in the 1st quarter and then seemed to stall
out for the rest of the game. It’ll be
interesting to see how the next few games play out in Minneapolis….
Temple
@ Domers: Kelly’s seat cooled
off a little, but the fan base is still pissed.
Some were calling for the Domers to lose this game in order to be rid of
Kelly and $warbuck$. Looks like that
contract might stay intact a while longer.
But the Bulldogs are coming to town, albeit they’re dinged up.
Bowling
Green @ Sparty: Sparty
didn’t do anything to quell the doubts regarding last season’s 3-9 debacle. Sloppy play and lots of turnovers… They won,
but they didn’t impress against a weak Bowling Green team. Sparty fan’s are in for a long season.
The 5
Stages of Slappy Fan Grief
- Denial and Isolation –Any
fan base who’s team played a BIG TIME opponent and lost is in this
phase…Hey, we just have to run the table and everything will be fine!
- ANGER –Texas and Texas
A&M These fan bases are gonna want someone’s
head on a platter after the next losses.
A&M might get their wish, but I doubt the ShortHorns will.
- Bargaining –Seminoles It’s not over, but
it just got really interesting.
- Depression –Gatorland How on Earth do you win
the SEC East two years in a row and get blown out by a “weak” 3rd
Place B1G East Team??
- Acceptance
–
Not yet! Season’s still young….
NEW! Ref Rants!
Again – from SuperFan!!!
Not osu-indiana, but a picture of a “Good No Call” from the Bama – FSU game:
I had only watched
20 minutes of football (Thursday night) before I was already livid at the
horrible officiating AND the horrible commentary on the plays that revealed the
horrible officiating. Is it no longer pass interference to grab, push,
battery, a receiver as long as it is within 1 second of the arrival of the
ball? Is it now OK to hold a defensive player unless the ball carrier is
within one foot of the defender being held? Adding to the frustration was
a) the lack of replays and analysis of these plays, or worse b) the commentary
praising the “no-call” as I am watching what has ALWAYS been PI, or holding
happening right before my eyes. Honestly, I really do not know if I can
continue to watch football if this level of constant injustice continues at
this frequency. The suckeyes got so many favorable calls/no-calls in the
first quarter that I truly think that IU may have been able to win that game
had the officiating been proper. Yes, I know what the final score was, but
the entire nature of the first half was significantly altered by REPEATED bad
calls/no-calls!
I have to admit, I saw some pretty atrocious officiating
over the weekend and I’m just hoping that it’s all “First Game, First Weekend”
type stuff. But we will have to see.
Idle
Thoughts from Saturday
-Coming to your City!
-I like Game Day
-It gets on my nerves sometimes…
-Like having to re-live the 10-year anniversary of the
Horror…
-There needs to be another Big Upset in College Football
that will replace that…
-I can’t bear seeing that every 10 years…
-Herbstreit calling Michigan’s D Better than last season.
-The MMQ Agrees
-This game could be special!
-The longest 3 and a half hours of any Saturday are the
ones between Game Day and a 3:30 Kick off.
-I hate the Maize Uniforms.
-Finally, it’s here!
-Stop texting that we can’t run the ball…Florida’s strength
is their D-Line.
-Whiskey – Tango – Foxtrot…
-Pick
6 - dammit
-Speight, YOU’RE KILLING ME!
-WTF!!!!!
-Speight,
you’re incredibly lucky this game is in Dallas and not in the Big House.
-You
would have been booed off the field.
-O’Korn in.
-Let him pass – quickly!
-Okay, nice pass in O’Korn’s 2nd series.
-55 yards?
-Harbaugh – you’re nuts.
-I don’t care how good you think this kid is. Nordin can’t
possibly make a –
-Wait
-It’s
got a lot of leg on it!
-It’s
GOOD!!!!
-Wild Thing!
-You make my heart Sing!
-Okay, damage mitigated.
-With the exception of 2 Pick 6’s, Michigan dominating this
game.
-Nice drive to start the 2nd half.
-Florida can’t do a damn thing against
Michigan’s D!
-This “Young Defense” that won’t be able to match last
season’s group…
-I almost feel bad for the gators…
-ALMOST
-SEC Over-rated.
This isn’t the 17th team in the country.
-No way.
-And this made it on TV - Drain the Swamp!
-Nice tackle for loss!
-Winnovich!
-Defensive TD! Gotta
love it!
-11 total TFL’s on the day!
-Gators may not be able to re-group from this…
-Too Bad, So sad…
THE MMQ’s “I DON’T NEED A COMMITTEE!”
Will return when the Committee makes their first ranking!
The Hot Seat
A loyal
MMQ reader had a great idea!. So some people out there got to thinking and
sent the MMQ a note stating, “Hey, there’s some hot coach’s wives out
there! Why not do a season with them
featured as the Hot Seat Mascots!
Great
Idea!
I’ve located several I think will rank pretty well but I’m also looking for suggestions to round out the field. If you have any ideas, shoot me an e-mail or a text! And they don’t have to be Football Wives! Case in Point: Week 1’s HSM: USC Hoops Coach Any Enfield’s Wife Amanda! Who has actually been featured as an HSM in the past!
ZAPPED
List
We’ll keep track of who’s gone as the season progresses….
- “Holier than Thou” Hugh Freeze
Electric
Chair of Death Seat!
- Sumlin–
Everyone has to know how much I hate taking Kelly off this one, but it
feels like this guy might be coaching for his job this season.
The Hot Seat
- Butch Jones - Tennesse. Your team just gave up
525 yards on the ground
- McElwain –
Gatorland is a mess….
- Mike Riley –
Still not Husker Football in Lincoln.
This experiment may be close to over.
- Mora –I
know UCLA won, but still, down 44-10 to A&M gets you on this list this
week…
