Blue Endzones and the LNU Regents Fail to Fire Engler

Blue End Zones Are Here

I’m not 100% sure how I feel about these yet.  And of course, EVERYONE IS GOING TO HAVE AN OPINION on these!!!

OLD

vs

NEW

Texted this weekend:

Russ – Blue End Zones.  Did anyone know this was coming?
Answer:  I had no idea.

I guess the powers that be knew…But why keep it a secret?  Afraid of “Halo Backlash?”

I mean, as everyone knows at this point, I really don’t like screwing with tradition.  I guess as long as we don’t go “Totally Blue” or “Totally Maize” on the field, I’m fine with it.  Examples of people “getting it wrong:  OLSM Red Field is hard on the eyes.  And I simply cannot stand the Boise State turf, either….

Football Fields need to be GREEN, as in Grass Color.

Again, I think this might – MIGHT – Actually grow on me.  I couldn’t stand when Goss pimped out the Big House with the Halo and the addition of the suites actually improved what the Big House looks like from the outside.

Time will tell…

In Case You Want To Skip the Season And Just Jump To the Bowls

If the bowls ended up looking like what Vegas is predicting, well, Michigan is stuck in the Citrus.

And your national title contenders?  Here:

  • Cotton semifinal (Arlington, TX): No. 2 Clemson (11) vs. No. 3 Ohio State (10.5)
  • Orange semifinal (Miami): No. 1 Alabama (11) vs. No. 4 Washington (10.5)

I love predictions like this just to see how wrong they are when the time comes.   I mean, Washington out of the Pac 12?  I’m thinking that’s not likely.  I also think that Clemson and Bama could lose this season.  Don’t ask me why.  Not a lot of logic behind that thought process.

LNU Saga Continues:  Engler Called Out By Survivors

It just feels like this thing is never going to end.  I’m not sure why Engler is even hanging around at this point as everyone from Regents, Faculty, Students and now Survivors have called for his ouster.  I “thought” the president served at the behest of the Regents and they could bounce him any time.

What’s everyone waiting for?  More bad press?

More than 120 victims of Larry Nassar issued a statement Tuesday saying that Michigan State University Interim President John Engler needs to leave the post.
The letter also said the five trustees that didn't call for Engler to step down must "stand for what is right."
Engler's behaviors have "sent a chilling message across MSU's campus, causing damage that cannot be repaired until he is gone," according to the statement.
The statement follows calls for Engler to step aside and calls for the board to fire him after private emails emerged last week  in which Engler suggested that Rachael Denhollander, the first gymnast to publicly accuse Nassar of sexual abuse, might get a "kickback" from her attorney for "manipulating" other victims
Last week, Engler said he was focused on the work ahead at MSU and would not step down.
"I continue to look ahead," Engler said then. "Whatever the tensions were before, we have successfully negotiated a settlement agreement — something that is fair and equitable to both sides, and that both sides agreed to. We are now committed to continuing our efforts to strengthen sexual misconduct prevention on and off campus and to respond promptly to and appropriately if prevention fails."
Denhollander said Engler's remarks clearly send a message that anyone who speaks out will "either be viewed as manipulating for personal gain, or being foolishly manipulated."
Michigan Offers A 7th Grade QB????

Michigan is now in the “Early Offer” mode that is sweeping the country.  IT’s gimmicky as this kid will probably get a lot of offers, but it’s a strategy that wakes the country up to talent they might not otherwise know about, shows that Harbaugh is “outworking” the other guys, and hey, Michigan was first!

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh has offered a scholarship to a seventh-grade quarterback.
Dante Jacob Moore, a 13-year-old who will enter eighth grade in the fall at A.G.B.U. Alex & Marie Manoogian School, a charter program in Southfield, received the offer Monday after participating at U-M’s football camp in Ann Arbor, according to Moore's father, said Otha Sr.
“(Harbaugh) just said he had heard word about him and (asked) was I bringing him to the camp," Otha said. "He was looking forward to meeting him. He has been working out with Devin (Gardner) a lot, as well as Quarterback U. He has been on Devin’s Instagram. I think that’s where Harbaugh saw him."
The Mailbag, Texts and Social Stuff

Why do you think LNU hasn’t done the right thing with the regents and especially Engler?  This is becoming a farce.
I’ve been as vocal a critic of LNU since the beginning of the whole Nassar incident and in fact, I think I was more outraged than a lot of the LNU Alumni.  Which, IMHO, is still a BIG part of the problem.   But whenever I think, “What if that had been one of my daughters?”  I get sick to my stomach.  I guess that’s why I’m still outraged.  Massively outraged.
FIRE EVERYBODY!!!!
Everyone knows I’ve been as hard on LNU as I was on Michigan during BranDictator Gate.  I believe I posted just about every day regarding some issue that BranDictator was F-ing up somewhere.  Especially near the end.  I don’t have that kind of time to dedicate to LNU, but there should be a dedicated blogger out there that is compiling all of this information as a tool to go after everyone still involved at LNU that was part of the lack of oversight and everyone needs to go down.
In ANOTHER BAD Move by the Regents, they’re meeting “unofficially” this week “In Private” at a two-day Retreat, starting on Wedensday, so as to avoid being subject to the Michigan Open Meetings Act.  This is happening much to the chagrin of everyone that’s watching the Regents closely.  I’m not sure how the Group that’s meeting can decide what is and isn’t private, however.  It seems like there should be a Governing Board that reviews the agenda and makes that decision for the Regents.
But the retreat, an annual event, is closed to the public — which critics say sends the wrong message given the key decisions facing the board at a public meeting Friday. Among them: a $500 million settlement with Nassar's victims, tuition rates for 2018-19, the appointment of a chief legal officer and, potentially, the future of interim President John Engler.
Though MSU's trustees are subject to Michigan's Open Meetings Act, which requires deliberations of public bodies to occur in an open meeting, a 2016 ruling by the state Court of Appeals determined that university boards had discretion to determine which meetings were considered official.
Two of MSU's trustees  — Brian Mosallam and Dianne Byrum — last week called for Engler to resign amid the controversy over his emailed comments criticizing one of Nassar's most prominent sexual assault victims.
But Engler said then he wasn't leaving, and planned to "continue to look ahead."
Mosallam said Tuesday that he will be talking informally with the other six trustees to get enough votes to call for Engler's firing during Friday's formal board meeting.
Five of the eight trustees, or a majority of a meeting quorum (four trustees out of seven, for example), would be needed to terminate Engler, according to MSU spokeswoman Emily Guerrant.
"The situation is fluid," said Mosallam, who said it was a mistake to hire Engler nearly five months ago. "It's amazing that he has yet to apologize. An apology is powerful. It is an acknowledgment of failure. It is an act of contrition and an act of empathy. His lack of apology clearly shows he's lacking."
I may be an idiot in some people’s eyes (stop laughing – I know there’s a lot of you!), but all of that sounds pretty important and public to me – especially the part about whether or not you can get enough votes to can the sitting Prez.  If I was on the proposed Governing Board that approved private meetings for university officials, I’d tell them this one needs to be open to the public.  Again, part of the reason why I think there was a lot more knowledge of what was going on with Larry Nassar and people just ignored it or swept it under the rug....
Again, it all seems VERY SHADY when it comes to LNU any more….
And The Board of Regents FAILS TO FIRE ENGLER!
Glad I waited to post.   Hot OFF the PRESS!!!
From the article:
It took less than four minutes for the effort to replace John Engler as Interm President to jump from behind closed doors to out in the public.
As the MSU board met Friday morning, trustee Brian Mosallam - the most outspoken board member critic of Engler - interrupted Engler as the agenda for the meeting was being approved.
Mosallam called for the floor, surprising Engler. Mosallam then made a motion to amend the agenda for the meeting to place an item on it that would have fired Engler for cause.
The crowd of protesters - most wearing teal t-shirts - erupted in applause.
But it was short-lived.
The board voted down the change, 2-6, with only Dianne Byrum joining Mosallam in voting for the change.
During public comment, speaker after speaker called for Engler to go.
Bryan Tarrant, the parent of a Nassar survivor, said when he looks in mirror, he sees a father who failed his little girl. Tarrant, who was very emotional during his speech, says Engler is a monster hiding in plain sight.
So what now?  With a public outcry being as loud as it is, does Guv Snyder have the guts to step up and axe the Board along with Engler for being incompetent and for cause?  Time will tell…
ETC
Burger King Baby???

Under the category of, “You can’t make this shit up!”, Burger King launched an ad campaign that promised a cash prize and free Whoppers for life to any women that became pregnant by a World Cup Soccer Player and could prove it.  I’m sorry…But you GOTTA LOVE RUSSIA!!!

Lefty Hits A Moving Putt

I didn’t see it when it happened on Saturday, but the outrage was everywhere.  IS this that big of a deal?  I mean, the USGA sets up the US Open courses a year in advance to frustrate the best of the best.   To drive them nuts.   In that, I think they succeeded.  I’d actually feel pretty good if I was one of the guys creating the challenge.  But the golf world snapping their collective caps and stating that this will forever tarnish Lefty’s career?  Nah…Calm yourselves people.  It’s not the end of the world.  Daly did it first, after all.  At least in the modern era of golf.  And I’m sure there have been others.

BIG Friday Round-Up

Sorry - this probably should have been two posts....Lots of stuff going on....

Gary Wants a “Taste of a National Championship”

In addition to wanting to have the “Best Defensive Line In the Country”, Gary also came out and said he wanted a taste of a National Title.

HEADS UP:  I think we’d ALL LIKE THAT, Rashan

“I’m focused on going to the Big Ten, winning it, going to the national championship and winning it,” Gary said. “I’m just focused on the season. I ain’t even thinking about the NFL, to be honest. I’m focused on the season, focused on my brothers and what we’ve got right ahead of us. It’s right there, we’ve just got to go get it.
“I need a national championship. I need that. That’s something that me and (linebacker Devin) Bush and our whole 2016 class was talking about is winning that national championship. That’s something I need a taste of. I’m not thinking about (the NFL). I’m focused on the season and my brothers.

Two Way Mason?

This one boggles my mind a little.  Fullback and Linebacker are two of the more “punishing positions to play at any level of football, much less at the D1 Collegiate level.  For Ben Mason to come off an injury and be ready to go on both sides of the ball sounds like too much to this old timer.  But he’s thinking he can do it.

Good Luck and Go Blue!

Michigan Gets Jeff George Jr. From Illinois

Michigan now has a “plethora” of QB’s in the stable and the competition will likely be fierce.  Not sure I understand this transfer, however, as I don’t believe Illinois had many other options at QB.  But the Illini offense (and defense) has been “Rutger-esque” under head coach Lovie Smith and this might be another dagger in his coffin, even though the Illini started more freshmen last season (10 starters – more than anyone else in all of D1 College Football).  So maybe Jr. saw the writing on the wall and realized that it wasn’t going to be much better for him this season.  Take 2 years of eligibility to a place where you might get a shot to compete.

The “Idiots In Indy” Make a Smart Decision!  AMAZING!

So, the “Idiots In Indy” FINALLY DO SOMETHING POSITIVE for the Student Athlete.  On Wednesday, literally out of the blue, the “I-I-I” announced that all redshirt freshmen could play up to 4 games in their freshman season and not burn their redshirt.  The change is that it used to be if you played in 1 game, you burnt it.  This will give coaches a chance to get more guys playing time (especially in garbage minutes) and hopefully develop players a little quicker than they otherwise would have.

This is almost taking a step backwards in time to when all freshman were redshirts.  Hopefully, everyone understands that dropping from 120 to 105 and then finally down to the 85-scholarship limit was an unintended consequence of Title IX and the effort of trying to balance out the male-female student athlete problem without going broke by adding more female athletics.

Of course, a lot of athletic departments welcomed that with open arms as it greatly reduced costs (fewer scholarships, less equipment, etc.) but the Football Dynasties of the era would come to an end as the field leveled quite a bit between “Big Money” programs and small timers.

The other rule – transfer option – is a good idea as well.  A student athlete doesn’t need to seek permission to request a transfer any more.  Some will argue this will create a free agency atmosphere.  Maybe.  It will again give the student athlete more options and greater freedom to earn a shot at doing something at the next level.  If it’s good for the Student Athlete, I’m all for it.

Winningest Team EVER In The NBA

In the NBA Finals of 2015-16, the 0-2 Golden State Warriors, who had won 67 games in the regular season, made this guy a bunch of money.  Yes, I do follow sports more when I have a little “scratch” on the line.

The beauty of the bet was, I was betting against what many (younger) people think is the GOAT in LeBron and I’m a little older and wiser.  I was able to get very nice odds as a result and in the process sort of became a pseudo GSW fan.  Especially when the Pistons have been as bad as they are….I knew that Curry and company were a solid team that played great defense.  I also gleaned the fact that they are a 2nd half (3rd period) team.  And that the Cavs weren’t nearly as good as advertised.

This season was a little more of the same, although GSW lost 24 games this season without Curry in the line-up every night.

But here’s what’s really interesting:  During the regular season over the last 4 years, the GSW have won 265 games (and lost 63) when looking at an 82-game schedule.  There has never been another NBA team that has accomplished that feat.  Not even the Chicago Bulls in their prime (the 90’s).   Could this “Super Team” be the one that were talking about for generations to come?

And before you start with, “But whenever there’s a dynasty, it ruins it for everyone except for the fans that root for the dynasty.”   Yeah, well….

“It’s Good To Be The King!!!”

Eventually, a dynasty will make everyone better.  Has to.  As more coaches try to emulate and copy-cat the good guys, teams will eventually get better.  Granted, it helps to have Curry, Durant, et al on the team.  But they will make everyone better.

LNU Football Players Sentenced to Probation & Sexual Re-Hab

The three LNU Football Players that were accused and charge with sexual misconduct got 36 months probation, 100 hours community service and cannot log on to Tinder and other sex related apps.

But they get to go to sex re-hab and meet new contacts there!!!  Reminds me of the time Sam Malone had to go to Sex Addiction Re-Hab….

Three former Michigan State University football players who accepted plea deals to a charge of seduction in a sexual assault case were sentenced Wednesday to 36 months probation and ordered to undergo sex offender treatment.
Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina also ordered Josh King, Donnie Corley and Demetric Vance to complete 100 hours of community service and stay off dating apps and websites such as Tinder. And she issued a 365-day suspended jail sentence, which the three men won’t serve unless they violate probation.
I’m old fashioned, but the way the details of the event were described, well, it doesn’t SOUND like seduction to me….

Michigan State University Police previously said the victim reported that King invited her to "speak somewhere quiet," then "pulled" her into a bathroom and forced her to perform oral and vaginal sex. Corley and Vance were each accused of later forcing her to perform oral sex.
Police also alleged that King recorded himself having sex with the woman.
And I haven’t met a lot of chicks that like being filmed during the act

Seduction.  Nice.

The Pot Is Calling the Kettle Black at LNU

Uh, excuse me, I’m just a casual observer here, but didn’t you clowns UNANIMOUSLY APPOINT THIS GUY???

In what can only be described as the most ironic thing ever, LNU Regent Masallam is calling for Engler’s head on a platter.

"It has become abundantly clear to me that this crisis will not truly settle until John Engler steps down as interim president," he said in a statement emailed to the media. "Unfortunately, and with great regret, John Engler’s tenure as interim president has continued the bleeding rather than stem it.
"I no longer believe that John Engler’s presence on this campus will allow Michigan State University to move forward. We need leadership that sets a tone of empathy and compassion towards our courageous survivors, and reembraces them as important members of our Spartan community. John Engler simply can no longer do that. And for these reasons, John Engler should step down immediately as this university's interim president."

Classic…After everyone approved the guy.

When are the Regents going to get shit-canned?  Where’s Snyder?  He could really be a hero now…

What a complete and utter disaster in East Lansing.

Three New Bowl Games?  THREE NEW BOWL GAMES????

Whiskey – Tango – Foxtrot…In what is already a “saturated” bowl market of undeserving teams with at times 0.500 records (or worse), the unregulated bowl world is deciding to add three new games into the post-season format.  You know.  So no one “feels” bad about being left out…

Chicago and Myrtle Beach are locks for a bowl with a third still undetermined site to be named later.  There’s a lot of other stuff in the article including conference bowl game limits, etc.  What was missing was the fact that now that you have 65% of D1 schools that will be playing in bowl games, some of those teams are going to have losing records.

Pure money grab(s).  Put the unpaid talent on display for another game no one will watch that will cost schools money (rarely do schools that play in anything above the Top 15 bowls make money).  When I say cost the schools money:  Transportation, housing, food, etc. all comes out of the Athletic Department Budget.  But we’ve ALL been bitchin’ about this for a long time….

What SHOULD be done to the Bowl System?

Frankly, now that there’s a play-off, I’d shit-can the whole damn thing and start over with something – ANYTHING that made sense and would maintain competitive MEANINGFUL games.

Meaning teams with 4 or fewer losses “Qualify” for the bowls.  The bowls could have their pick from those eligible teams and if they need to dip lower for whatever reason, they can.  That’s probably right around what I referred to above, or about 15 bowls total (Top 30 teams go to Bowls).  Sort of a less is more analogy. You could charge more for advertising, fans might actually attend nice, WARM locations, etc.  And 15 bowls works out to an 8-4-2-1 style play-off if the time ever came for a 16 team play-off…

And please – let’s get creative on the names of these new flea-bag bowls!!

Minnesota Gophers Accused of Sexual Misconduct Fight Back
Due to the fact that I followed this one pretty closely, I find it interesting that the student athletes in this case are fighting back.  The details are a little fuzzy for me right now, but I recall reading the arrest reports and witness’ statements and it sounded pretty perverse and it was gang bang type sex, but at the time it was going down, it was mutual.  Until of course, it wasn’t when said female woke with “Gang Bang Regret”.  Charges were never filed, and then the Uofm Title IX Moral Police got involved after the female involved changed her mind several times and Title IX enforcers ran the football players off campus.  Now, they’re back suing.  (9-10 players suing for $45M is thought to be the damages…)
It’ll be fun to see where this goes.  No one has “challenged” Title IX yet, or they at least haven’t challenged a Title IX Sexual Misconduct case that may or may not have been handled “properly”.  I want to see how it plays out in court in a case of,  “ He Said – She Said” and when does consensual become non-consensual and what moral high ground does a University have over two or more human beings bumping their uglies in any manner they choose???  If someone wants to have group sex, whose business is it anyway?
Cabrera Rips Biceps Tendon
I didn’t see it live, but here’s a link to an article that shows the swing (If you haven’t seen it)…

You can see when he extends at the end of the swing when it happened.  Ouch.  Miggy is definitely in the final stages of his career and this isn’t going to help him or the Tigers…and they still owe him $145M.  Wojo sums it up here pretty well….

Tiger Brings “Privacy” to the US Open

Seeing as how Shinnecock Hills is only 15 minutes away from the Yacht Club in New York, Tiger decided to bring his Yacht Privacy and dock it there instead of staying in a hotel.  Apparently the commute from the golfer/player/media hotel can take up to an hour and a half…

Must be nice…I’m in the wrong business.

And I can’t golf…so good.

“Freeze Racoon!” - Golden Gopher State Makes Racoons Loveable

I wasn’t going to post on this, but I sent an e-mail out earlier in the week and it seemed like an ETC item, also.  I probably “eliminate” several of these little fellows a year due to the fact that they can destroy property really fast.  I got grief before this and now the world loves these things…sheesh…
