Thursday Round-Up, Mailbag & More

Michigan Football Heading for South Africa

Announcing another Big Trip, Harbaugh named next year’s location:  South Africa.

I know these trips bug the crap out of the other “Big” universities out there and there has to be a some positive affect regarding recruiting with respect to this.  I mean, imagine if you were a freshman 3 years ago?  You’ve seen Rome, France and now you’re gonna’ get to see a place that most people wouldn’t dream of going to, much less be able to afford it.  That’s gotta’ be worth something!  I’ve never been to South Africa (or anywhere on the African Continent) and this one actually sounds kind of interesting.   Always sort of wanted to see both of the Capes (Good Hope and Horn).  MMQ Mom AMH took the trip and saw the penguins on the beach.

Maybe Michigan will practice (and play some REAL FOOTBALL) in the Cape Town Arena that was constructed in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup???

Who Knows?

Chip Patterson Has Michigan As B1G Title Contender

I read Chip every now and then and his entry on Michigan was interesting and I think he’s thinking what everyone else is thinking.  Can Michigan actually get decent QB play this season?

7. Michigan can win the Big Ten with good, but not great, QB play: If you are picking Michigan to win the Big Ten, it should be because of the rest of the roster, which was very good but still one year away during the Wolverines' 2017 campaign. But the discussion around the Wolverines will continue to focus almost exclusively on Shea Patterson and the quarterback position. That's because Jim Harbaugh and quarterback play are linked, and this is a very big season for Harbaugh. But Michigan could be really good this year because of the other 21 positions, and I want to make sure that doesn't get missed.

Chip also has Patterson as a potential Heisman candidate, but I’m not even 100% sure that Shea will be the starter.  Peters may still be a candidate for starter at the end of the day.

Mailbag, Texts and Tweets

I was going to respond privately to this individual, but then I got on a roll…Here’s what I think about someone thinking I’m taking things too far when it comes to LNU.  I don’t mean that in a “mean spirited” way towards anyone, and I want to make that perfectly clear. In fact, I wasn’t trying to be mean last Friday.  But why aren’t more people pissed off and demanding some answers regarding LNU?

Russ – Friendly advice:  I think you’re taking this LNU thing a little too far.  MSU fans hate the fact that this is happening (or happened) to their university.  We are sickened by it, probably a lot like PSU fans, and we just want to move on.  I know I DIDN’T have anything to do with the Nassar issue, but moving forward, every time I’m at a party or in a discussion at work with someone new and the question comes up, “Where did you go to school?”  I’m now going to be forever embarrassed that this happened at my alma mater.  And Remember:  It could happen anywhere – even Michigan.

Dear Loyal Reader:  I understand and empathize with you.  However, I’m still a little Short On Sympathy for your university. I know how you’re feeling.  I get that it’ll never be the same for anyone associated with Sparty.   However, that being said, I can’t help but wonder if something like that could really happen somewhere else?  I mean, we all know something similar happened at PSU.

But what happened in East Lansing, well, don’t you think that maybe there’s a modicum of truth to the fact that too many people turned their back on what was going on?  Larry Nassar was supposed to be a trustworthy member of this university!  Instead, for a whopping 20 years, this guy had enablers EVERY STEP OF THE WAY all the way up to the tippy-top!!!

Right up to LKS who is getting a full pension, football game day suite, basketball floor seats and other perks with her “Resignation”!!!  It’s not like she even resigned, she just got to quit working and is still getting paid her full salary!!!  If I was a fan (or even attending a game as a non-fan) I believe I would have to boo her every appearance from this point forward.

330+ victims...

I guess what I’m saying is, while PSU officials (AD and the President) who were part of the Grand Scheme that more or less defined the “Lack of Institutional Control”, per the NCAA, wait for their days in court, Nassar is the ONLY GUY from LNU THAT’S IN THE KLINK.  It’s disgraceful.  It’s a sham.  And the fact that LNU is only getting stuck for $500M when PSU was into the Sandusky affair for over $1 Billion??  Sickening.  So, somehow, there’s less outrage and less monetary penalty for a guy fingering 12-20 year old girls/ young women vs. a guy having sex with pre-teen and teenage boys?

I guess that’s where my head is right now.

330+ VICTIMS that were assaulted in the “safe confines” of a college campus!!!

And one guy in jail…That’s it.  OK – they arrested Strempel, who appears to be another pile of crap.  And I know there’s been other coaches and assistants that have left or resigned.

That’s not enough.

Instead of being embarrassed, why aren’t you just a little bit pissed off by all of this?  I know I would be if it was my Alma Mater.  I’d still be demanding answers and want people’s heads on a platter – starting with the former president of the University.  AND I would want ALL THE REGENTS’ HEADS WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN OVERSEEING ALL OF THIS!

Each and every PSU regent has been replaced since 2012.
Clean Sweep.
Gone…

PSU “got it” and atoned for their sins.

So far, you’ve got a former president living high on the hog that’s not doing shit for your university.  And not one regent has even offered to step down due to their lack of oversight.

Just sayin’…

Yet when I talk to people associated with LNU, most of the fans or grads just shrug and are like, “Well, at least the monsters in jail.”  Well, OK, but how many more monsters are out there and what are they getting away with?  And there’s a problem with all of LNU if you think by just throwing one guy in the can fixes all of these problems.

Don’t be embarrassed.  Get mad and demand answers.

More Ex-LNU Players in the Sexual Assault News

In a way, I feel a little bad for Mumphery here.  I remember when this was being investigated and the Sherriff’s department didn’t think there was enough evidence to warrant charges.  (the encounter appeared to be consensual) But LNU still booted him off campus under Title IX violations.  I don’t think it’s fair to start having a consensual tryst only to have it thrown back in your face as assault.

Moral of the Story:   Keep your you know what in your pocket.

Judge Presiding Over LNU Case Thinks Engler Should Step Down
She makes some valid points.   Naming Engler in the beginning may not have been the greatest idea…
Larry Nassar University Is Already Costing You More Money
And if you’re thinking this DOESN’T in any way affect you, you couldn’t be more wrong.  Michigan Health Insurance premiums will be impacted, Medical Mal-practice insurance will go up in Michigan as a result and the overall trickle down affect is going to happen.  Another reason to remain PISSED OFF about LNU…I guess I'd like to know how any of these laws would have impacted the people associated with the crimes at LNU?  would LSK be screwed here?  Hollis?
And Michigan Wins Again!
Michigan had a total of 8 Varisty teams finish the year with Perfect APR scores.  LNU only had 3 teams that achieved perfection.  So, there’s that….
ETC
Ding-Dong – The Witch Is DEAD!!!
Corporate Mascots (Flo, Mayhem, The Gecko, etc) all get old after a while.  I mean, they’re funny for a while and then I don’t want to see them anymore.

Howeva’!!!  THIS F@#$CKER WAS ON MY NERVES THE FIRST TIME I SAW HIM!!!
Dr. Pepper is “retiring” Larry Culpepper from their ads and I have to say, I’m truly overjoyed!  I’m a channel flipper anyway, but there are times when you’re stuck watching commercials.  There has to be a better marketing guy to run Dr. Pepper’s marketing department.  I don’t like little sweet, either…
I Remember When This Happened…
And why we ALL need to remember that they’re just games, folks.  Yes, the other guys are asshats but we need to keep our anger and our feelings in check.

Can An Expansion Team Win The Stanley Cup?

If you’ve been reading me for a while, you know that regarding the professional “Big 4” sports, I’m an NFL Fan, Baseball Fan, NBA Fan and when the Wings are decent, a Red Wings (but not NHL) fan.  In That Order.  I’ve never connected to the professional hockey league, and I have lots of reasons.  Hockey doesn’t have a “day” (College and the NFL) and a “Time” (noon Saturday and 1:00PM on Sunday) and isn’t something where you can watch your team every night (Tigers).  There’s more but that’s not the point of this entry…

This Las Vegas Golden Knights thing is intriguing to this fan.  Every GM took the opportunity to dump huge contracts and players that were problem children but could play and created an all-star team of sorts.

How can you even be a fan without going through the trials and tribulations of losing, swearing off your team, and then come crawling back the following season?  Drinking the kool-aid of the draft, off-season trades and articles about how great the team is looking in pre-season practice or the actual pre-season?  If you were a fan new to hockey, I guess this isn’t a terrible way to start out….

A quick google search tells us that no expansion team in the last 25 years (or ever, for that matter) has ever won the title in their first season.

If the Knights pull this off, it’ll be a first.  You should probably start watching if you haven’t already.

It’ll be fun!

And We’ll See How This Works Out…

NFL is going to fine clubs if any of their players kneel during the National Anthem and players have the option of staying in the locker room until after the Anthem is played if they choose not to listen to it.

My take:  Black balling Kapernick and other players started to “ebb” the desire of players to demonstrate.  I think the league could have left this alone and it would have died out due to the blackballing, alone.  And the problem is, fans that “left” the NFL and found other things to do may not come rushing back as the things they found to do might be better.

Friday Round-Up: Nassar News, Patterson For Heisman, Over/Under Season Wins, More

Received a lot of good feedback from you regarding my last post about Art Vuolo.  I actually had a chance to have a longer conversation with him and he has some great stories.   They are more talking stories and some of it would not be blog type of stuff….

But if something ever comes up, I’ll be sure to add some of them in here…

Don’t Forget:  Softball Regional at NOON today in Ketucky Against The Domers!

The Softball team kicks of the NCAA Tourney against the Domers today.  I’ll be sneaking peaks on line and following the action.  Michigan split with the domers earlier this season.

LNU Settles: $500M To Pay Off Nassar Victims

This grinds my gears to no end.  Compared to PSU, LNU got off easy.  I believe the PSU penalties and payments averaged around $3.5M per victim.  Not to mention the $60M the NCAA Fined them... If I do the math here, after legal fees, the victims are probably going to net less than $1M.  I’m not a victim advocate or anything, but I would be even more angry if my 12 to 16 year old daughter had been sexually penetrated by this sicko and all she was going to see was less than a million.

In addition, somehow, some way, every Michigander is going to feel this pain.  I just know it…  The money needs to come directly out of private donations or the University’s endowment.  That’s it.

Engler keeps shooting his mouth off with tuition and taxpayer dollars covering this penalty.  But the Michigan state legislature is going to push back really hard and may even introduce a law that states that Universities are on the hook with they have a penalty that is a direct result of negligence or lack of institutional control.

A loyal reader of the MMQ came up with an idea to make T-shirts with “Larry Nassar University” printed on them and sell them around Ann Arbor and the rest of the B1G so the fans have something to wear to egg on the visiting fans when LNU is in town!!!

Why Not????   Some examples:

Standard Clean Family Version

LNU State Penitentiary Orange

Slightly more adult version with one of the generally accepted emoji’s representing the female anatomy….

Internet adult version with common keystrokes representing female anatomy….

The Order Form - $6.15 Each….

Hmmmm……Yep.  I bet I could sell these for $20 a pop at the tailgate, easy….and then go down to $10 if sales slow down!!!

Bill Connelly kicks off his college football SP+ ranking for 2018

Michigan falls to number 10 on the list…

Shea Patterson 3rd in Pre-Season Heisman?

I have NO IDEA where or how this is a thing.  Patterson was 3rd best in the SEC last year.  I don’t know how moving to Michigan, learning an entirely new offense that he may or may not be suited for and learning new players moves him up to 3rd on the list.  Yeah, I know about the 7 games with over 300 yards passing and half of the time he was improvising.

Again, I’m OPTIMISTIC.  I’m just losing a lot of my crazy, I guess…Chase Goodhead is the writer (never heard of him) and he has Will Grier (QB – WVU) and Bryce Love (RB – Stanford) ahead of Patterson.

I mean, I’d TAKE it, but I sure wouldn’t be predicting it.  Not until I’ve seen him play in a Michigan uniform.

This article has several sportspooks (off shore) that have Shea at 16-1.

Jake Fromm, Georgia QB (10/1)
UGA has five-star freshman Justin Fields ready to go in case Fromm doesn’t play well, but he’ll probably play well and stay secure in his job.
Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama QB (10/1)
The oddsmakers think Tagovailoa will be Bama’s starter, evidently.
Khalil Tate, Arizona QB (14/1)
The most electric player in college football, now that Lamar Jackson’s in the NFL? Probably. And Arizona could be good enough for Tate to stay in the conversation.
Shea Patterson, Michigan QB (16/1)

Eligible immediately after transferring from Ole Miss, and really good. Patterson’s transitioning from more of a spread offense to a pro-style look, but his talent and Jim Harbaugh’s QB-coaching ability should make this work

Michigan’s Over/Under Is 8.5

Over/Unders for regular season victories are out for all D1 Football teams.  Michigan checks in at 8.5, which, while I was studying the schedule the other day and looking at Connelly’s summary, I was thinking that 8-9 wins would be the “Expectation” with the ceiling at 11 and the “what are we going to do about Harbaugh” at 7.  Maybe I’m being a little toooooooo pessimistic, but with the road schedule, Wiscy and Nebraska on the cross over, I just don’t know man.  I just don’t know….

So, right now I’ll wait a little bit before I wager on the 8.5 number.

Warde Manuel Contemplating “Lifetime” Contracts for Beilein & Harbaugh

I guess this is a good thing?  I mean, right now, JB can do no wrong, but a year and a half ago a lot of people (not this guy) wanted Beilein gone.  He had an injury riddled line-up and missed the tourney.  I didn’t think it was fair to be on his case then and I still don’t so I really don’t have an issue with the Beilein Lifetime.  Which, in reality, is probably only 5-10 years anyway.

Harbaugh, OTOH, still hasn’t “Gotten it done.”   While I understand all the reasons behind it, I think the 7 year deal is fine and he really doesn’t need to address a lifetime contract at this point.  I’m gonna guess and say that’s a deal Jimmy wants in order to keep everyone off his back about moving to the NFL, which seems to come up in the annual NFL coaching carousel.  Jimmy, I’m sure, is sick of that.  The Lifetime would at least rid him of that headache.

Ufer QB Golf Outing and Friday Stuff...

All,

If you’re not a Michigan Super Fan (which is about half of you!) you’re probably not going to get a lot of this post simply because most of it is about Michigan Football history.  Specifically, Michigan Radio history and people that have contributed to the Michigan Football history and have enriched the experience for everyone who is a Michigan Football Fan.

So, I apologize if you were looking for more, but today is for “radio” and it really helped me remember why I started this blog!!!

Monday, May 7th, Was A Special Day

Special “K”, a great high-school friend, happens to have a long history with the Ufer family that owns an insurance company in Ann Arbor.  Bob’s kids, Tom, Dave, Bob and Pam have continued to keep the “Bob Ufer Quarterback Club” alive and well and this was the 71st event for the club.  The club raises money for scholarships in addition to recognizing Michigan Senior Student Athletes and their accomplishments.

They have continued to keep the event going since Bob Sr.’s passing on October 26th in 1981.

With an Invitation from Special “K”, I got a chance to have lunch with Tom and Dave Ufer and catch the first Thursday round of the NCAA tournament with them.  During that lunch, Special “K” was invited to the Bob Ufer QB Club Golf Outing at the U of M Golf Course and he immediately asked if I’d like to join.

I instantly replied “You bet your cotton pickin’ Maize and Blue heart I’d like to join!”

I shot out a quick text to several of you and immediately received a reply from TJH stating that he and Ekitten would be joining our 4-some on May 7th !!

May 7th came this past Monday and the foursome was all present and accounted for.  The first great part of the day was all the foursomes getting a picture with a former Michigan Basketball player that, frankly, nobody recognized until we were standing right next to him!  Spike Albrecht was the special guest on hand to kick the outing off right!

I’d like to say that we played a great round, but not having a lot of rounds under our belts this season, we didn’t fair that well.  In full disclosure, we finished 1-over (winners were 14 under!), but that’s not the entire story.

We were having cocktails in the reception area in the newly remodeled Clubhouse and the “Coach” and his old man walked in!  We jumped on the opportunity to grab some pics and shake hands with the leader of Michigan Football.

Jake Ruddock - Coach - E-Kitten

Tom Ufer - Coach - Dave Ufer

TJH - Coach - Special "K" - The MMQ

When we went upstairs to dinner, we were assigned tables and a gentlemen sat down that I recognized, but I didn’t know from where.  I have had a lifelong curse of NEVER FORGETTING A FACE and not being able to remember a name, in addition to not being able to recollect where I might know that face from.  I’ve hated it all my life and whenever I meet someone today, I try to compartmentalize it and force myself to remember, but I still am not that good…

Art Vuolo introduced himself and was sitting across from us and telling some awesome Michigan stories.  He commented that he produces video of Michigan Football and behind the scenes video of Radio broadcasts.  He also captures game footage and includes the Band Show Halftime highlights.  Basically, Art records everything Michigan!

The dinner concluded and the awards were handed out.  There was a lot of emotion watching the future grads talk about what the Michigan experience has meant to them and how their tenure at Michigan made them all better individuals.

 A list of the winners:

Senior Athlete Award Winners
Katelynn Flaherty – Women’s Hoops
PJ Ransford – Men’s Swimming
Gabby DeLoof – Women’s Swimming
Kyle Muller – Golf
Muhammad-ali Abdur Rahkman – Men’s Hoops

Spirit Award Winners
Austin Hatch -Men’s Hoops
Carly Bennett – Field Hockey
Mike Wroblewski – Football

Jim Brandstatter – The Bennie Oosterbaan Award

It wasn’t until I received Art’s e-mail a couple of days later with links to his work that it dawned on me when and where we had met.  It was when I was a student manager in 1988.  There’s usually a press day at practice before or on the day of the Spring Game.  Beckman and Brandstatter were running around interviewing coaches and there was this other dark haired, slightly shorter guy running around with them.  I remember shaking his hand and catching his name and chatting briefly with this high-energy dynamo when Beckman and Brandstatter started interviewing Coach Moeller.  (I was more or less Moeller’s student Manager)

THAT’S where I knew Art from!  Of course, he looked a lot younger and had darker hair!!!  (And so did the MMQ!!!!) It was 30 years ago this spring!!! A lot can change in 30 years, but he was as much a bundle of energy then as he is now.

So, without further ado:

An Art Vuolo Tribute

Anyway, I’ve spent that last few days going through a TON of Art’s videos (on youtube) and I will say that they are comprehensive and can be quite entertaining!!   Chances are if you’ve watched any Youtube video with Michigan in a game, Ufer or otherwise, you’ve probably seen some of Art’s work.

What I like most about it is that he does a lot of chatting with the fans at tailgates and does a lot of behind the scenes work with the radio personalities and the band.

When you read up on Art’s history, he has accomplished more than you can possibly imagine and it’s all because of his love for Michigan and Michigan Football.  I’m going to post Art’s e-mail that he sent to me here and let you read and feel for yourself how his love for Michigan runs deep (staring with a link to Art’s Website):

Hey Russ,

It was great meeting you at the Bob Ufer Quarterback Club event Monday night!  As you probably figured out, I pour my heart and soul into making great videos of Michigan Football, and have been doing so since 1979.  It was a special night and I was blown away by all the recognition, even though physically I was slipping fast.  Tuesday I was sicker than a dog, but I didn't want to delay any longer getting this out.

As promised here are a few links that will give you an idea of what I do with video and specifically at the Michigan football games. Check these out...  BTW, if you just type my name into YouTube lots of stuff will come up.  Type this one in: Jim Harbaugh talks to Art Vuolo for a 3 part 7 minute video that you will love!
This is my Michigan Football Hi-Lite Sampler from 2016.  It's the UM-Penn State game and is tightly edited to just 12 minutes.  This will give you an idea of how I do games each week.  Always with RADIO audio (much better) and all the stuff that TV doesn't cover.  BTW...this is the PSU game that we won!
Two days after the great honor at the Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago, I did this UM opener at the 2015 Rutgers game in Ann Arbor...I was just out of the hospital.  I had lost a lot of weight and was with Ann Arbor native and Chicago radio legend John Records Landecker.
Here's an amazing video clip from the UM vs. Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando on New Years Day.  Outrageous!  It shows why radio audio is better than TV, and why I always use the radio broadcast on my games.
Lastly a great moment from May 2016 when they gave me the coveted Yellow Jacket Award at the 69th Bob Ufer Quarterback Club Banquet. It was back when I was still dying my hair and had glasses. After 39 years of archiving Michigan football, it's truly nice to be appreciated.
Watch as much or as little as you care to and let me know what you think of this stuff.  I work hard to make all of my football videos a really cool production. I make the whole season available for just $189...less than the price of one UM-Ohio State ticket!  Pretty good deal.  BTW, from this year I have seven really great tournament basketball games; MSU, Purdue, Montana, Houston (buzzer-beater), Texas A&M, Florida State and Loyloa!  Radio audio is from IMG College Sports with Matt Shepard and Terry Mills.  Let me know what you think of all this stuff and also if you'd like to get on board for Michigan Football 2018.
My Best & Go Blue,

ART

All of Art’s work received the recognition it deserves from the Museum of Broadcast Radio in Chicago.  Art’s work will be on display in the museum.  In Addition to that honor, Art won the Maize Jacket Award in May of 2016.

On May 2, 2016 I was presented with The Yellow Jacket Award at the Bob Ufer Quarterback Club Sports Banquet at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor! It was totally unexpected and a huge honor for me. It's their most prestigious award and I held up pretty well. Enjoy!

I found another GREAT summary of Ufer looking through Art’s stuff that he contributed to as well (Credit to Dr. Sap for this one)

I’d like to think that all Michigan Men have a common bond and a common interest.  That is spreading the word of Michigan and everything associated with this great university.  It’s without question that Ufer was truly an inspiration for me and others have come along that have reinforced why I write this drivel in this blog.  To put things down so that someone may stumble upon it years from now that’s looking for a different perspective or how Michigan related to the rest of the world at any given moment in time.  Regardless, Art has become another inspiration and it was truly a pleasure meeting him!!

ETC.

Beaubien Named B1G Pitcher of the Year

Huge honor for Frosh pitcher Meghan Beaubien.  Meghan’s Stats: 32 victories (against 3 losses) and an ERA of 0.90 and an opponent batting average of 0.123 (I’m still trying to wrap my mind around that number!)  The B1G Conference named Beaubien the Pitcher of the Year AND the Freshman of the Year!!!  Meghan is also a finalist for the National Player of the Year (named by the NCAA).  Michigan, nationally ranked at #12,  probably has a shot at hosting an upcoming NCAA Regional in Ann Arbor.   The BTN will be airing the B1G Softball Tourney this weekend so tune in and catch some games!

And maybe part of Beaubien’s success is that fact that she’s playing for the B1G COTY!!!!

Hutchins is B1G Coach of the Year!!!

Hutch has won the B1G COTY for the 17th time in her 34-year career.  Michigan was actually supposed to be in a “slight” rebuilding year, but instead has gone 43-10 overall!  Pretty amazing accomplishment…

Once A Michigan Man, Always A Michigan Man

Moe Ways was a great football wide receiving recruit that didn’t quite pan out at Michigan.  But here’s a great story that shows you why there’s men and then there’s “Michigan Men”.

Another Rivalry Dies

In what can only be described as “Robbing the Fans that CARE!”, the administrators at PSU have decided that Pitt isn’t worth their time when it comes to football…But I’m sure the Nittany Lions fans will be tickled to death when San Jose State or Akron comes to town!!!  I hate that it all comes down to money in the end…
