The FMQ Week #8: The Revenge Tour Continues

I KNOW This Is a CFB Blog, But…
When something as egregious as this happens, I’ve got to get it off my chest…
For those of you that aren’t America’s Favorite Past Time Fans, continue down to the FMQ.  For those of you that are, you should be appalled that MLB replay couldn’t get this call correct.
Clearly, there was fan interference.  And this is how the rule reads:

The ball becomes dead, and the umpire will award any bases or charge any outs that, in his judgment, would have occurred without the interference. Such interference often occurs when a spectator in the first row of seats reaches onto the field to attempt to grab a fair or foul fly ball.

BUT!!!!!  Once that ball goes “into the stands”, the fans can do whatever they want.
Betts clearly appeared to be reaching over the railing as Altuve's ball descended. And major league rules state that once the ball crosses the threshold from the playing field into the stands, it's fair game for fans as well as the defender.
Except (Umpire) Joe West saw things differently from most of the 43,277 in Minute Maid Park
So, in the Boston-Astros Game four, Altuve bangs one deep to right field and Betts goes up for it.  Several fans appear to hit his glove, but at the same time, I’m not sure he was going to be able to make that catch.  AND THE BALL CLEARLY BROKE THE PLANE AND WAS IN THE STANDS!  The Right Field Ump West calls it an “out”.
Repeated replay doesn’t over-rule it.
My take:  How does the ump make that call?  If he merely throws both hands up and ruled a “dead ball”, the replay booth would have then been able to “make the call”, which, after watching it several times, I think – THINK – that not only would the catch would have been missed by Betts, but the ball was clearly over the rail and in the stands when the interference occurred.
It should have been an HR.
(Watch the trajectory and Betts mitt BEFORE the interference happens).  In any case, an out was very favorable call to Boston, IMHO.  And I don’t think it was an out…Worst Case:  Ground Rule Double?
Even in the Era of Replay, they can’t get calls right.
And it’s sad that fans haven’t learned to back off in those situations.  I have to believe that everyone has seen what Steve Bartman of Chicago Cubs infamy and the ESPN 30 for 30 “Catching Hell” has gone through. If you’re a lucky enough fan to be in the front row of a PLAY-OFF GAME, get the hell out of the way, fergodsakes!
That is all…
THE FMQ
I gave too many points last week.  That’s never a good idea, but man, it seemed like there were teams out there that were just ready to throw in the towel. College Football – go figure.  I love that I nailed the Tennessee and LSU upset picks.  Should gone moneyline on those, and I will admit I actually considered it with Tennessee.

There’s more elimination games this week, though not as obvious as last week.  And there’s some “quiet” rivalry games that teams just wanna’ win.
This week’s picks:
Oklahoma @ TCU (+8):  This is a scary spread...  In a way, I would have had the Laters as more of a 13 or 13.5 point spread in this one.  And THEN I would easily take the Horned Frogs as double-digit home dogs.  The problem now is the Horned Frogs just haven’t looked good the last couple of weeks.  The Texas Beat Down was for real and Texas Tech made the Frogs look very vanilla.  And I just don’t know how the Frogs bounce back.  And the Laters are coming off a bye…
Take the Laters and lay the 8 for $20
Cincinnati @ Temple (-3.5):  Cincinnati is undefeated, but they really haven’t played the strength of the American Conference yet.  And Temple is not a bad team, even though they’ve figured out a way to lose 3 games...  They knocked off Maryland earlier in the season and racked up a boatload of yards in the process.  But S&P+ likes the Bearcats more than the Owls.  I have to take the higher ranked team getting points.
Take Cincinnati and the 3.5 for $20
Bama @ Tennessee (+30.5 MONEYLINE:  $100: $3,250):  This is one of those “quiet rivalries” I was eluding to earlier.   Straight off their upset win over Auburn, the Vols might be feeling a lot better about themselves this week.  I’m not saying they can beat Satan’s Warriors, but they’ve gotta’ play the game.  Bama is a little banged up and I think – THINK – the Vols can cover that many points at home.
Take Tennessee and the 30.5 for $20
Just for Shits and Giggles:  MONEYLINE - Tennessee $10 - $325 (I can be wrong 32.5 times on a bet like this!!!)
MSU @ LSU (-6.5):  LSU is fresh off a pantsing of SEC East favorite Georgia.  In fact, there were a lot of fans that were picking the Dawgs to win the SEC this season.   MSU is 1-2 in the SEC under Moorehead with losses to Kentucky and Florida, both SEC East Schools.  So, technically, they’re still perfect in the SEC West.  But I don’t think the Tigers are going to take their foot off the gas this week and the Bulldogs might get steamrolled…
Take the Tigers and lay the 6.5 for $20
Oregon @ WSU (-3):  I know – I did a double-take when I saw this spread, too.    Oregon is the better team on paper, but the Pirate knows a thing or two about Shocktober football and how to upset better teams. And this is in Pullman.  And GAMEDAY is finally going to Pullman after Ole Crimson
has spent 15 years (216 consecutive Game Day Appearances) going to all the Gameday locations.  It’s a 7:30 (4:30 Local) ET start, meaning it’ll finish after sunset.  Still, aren’t the Ducks getting 3 points tempting?
Take Oregon and the 3 for $20
Gophers @ Nebraska (-4.5):  Wow.  A Winless Team is giving points at home to a team that just played THE STU to the end of a game that was closer than the score indicated.   This is a tricky spread.  I like the Cornsuckers to score their first W this week.  They SHOULD HAVE WON LAST WEEK.  Still, I have a quirky feeling this could be a 1 or 2-point contest when it’s all said and done.
Take the Gophers and the 4.5 for $20
Northwestern @ Rutgers (+20):  Right now, I’m looking for any excuse to bet AGAINST Rutgers.  Rutgers is a miserable 2-5 vs. the number and they don’t cover at home.  20 seems like a lot to lay with the Purple Kitties, but they’re still riding high with wins over LNU and the Cornsuckers.  I look for Fitzy’s Boys to win this game waking away…
Take the Purple Kitties and lay the 20 for $50
Maryland @ Iowa (-8.5):  This game and spread is puzzling….I really thought the Black Birds would be favored by double digits in this one, based on how Maryland has played on the road.  Meaning:  They haven’t played well AT ALL on the road.  This is only the 2nd time for Maryland at Kinnick, and for all intents and purposes, it’s really the first time for this crew as the last time the Terps were there was 2015.  I don’t like the Terps chances to win in this contest at all, and covering will be an issue…
Take Iowa and lay the 8.5 for $30
Vandy @ Kentucky (-10.5):  I thought Vandy was a better team a month ago.  Lately, they’ve done nothing but make me sorry for taking them and the points.  Kentucky is coming off a bye week and will have fresh legs and be in front of a home crowd.  I like the Wildcats walking away in this one…
Take Kentucky and lay the 10.5 for $30
NC State @ Clemson (-17.5):  Again, WHERE IN THE HELL DID THIS SPREAD COME FROM?  If you’ve watched this game for the last several years, you understand that NC State is not afraid of Clemson, has almost upset Clemson a couple of times, and is more or less built to beat Clemson (NC State has RECEIVERS and a QB – Clemson has secondary issues).  While the Wolfpack might not win, I’m certain they’ll keep it closer than 17.5…
Take the Wolfpack and the 17.5 for $30
THE STU @ Purdue (OPEN +14.5 TODAY:  12.5 MONEYLINE - $100:$400):  This spread is another head scratcher.   If you haven’t watched Purdue this season, you’re missing out.  Brohm’s offense is good.  REALLY GOOD.  And THE STU’s Defense (especially the secondary) is their achiles heel.  Fun Fact:  Which team leads the B1G with their Defense giving up plays of 30+ yards or more??? THE STU.  ANOTHER FUN FACT:  Which team leads the B1G with plays over 30+ yards on offense?  You got it – Purdue!!!  And they’re not called the “Spoilermakers” for nothing.  This game could easily swing in favor of the Spoilers and 50K Boiler fans could storm the field after the upset.
Take the Spoilers and the 14.5 for $30
Take Purdue and the MONEYLINE for $20
Michigan @ LNU (Open: +5 TODAY: +7 O/U:  41):
Sigh.  I’m REALLY hoping for, as AP put it when Nebraska came to the Big House, “A Good Old-Fashioned ASS-KICKING!” in East Lansing tomorrow.  This will be the 111th meeting and with an overall record of 69-36-5, Michigan has truly DOMINATED their little brothers from the north since they started playing this game.  However, recent history and D’antoeiunsd suggest there may be a change in that trend.  LNU, under aforementioned “ass-hat” of a coach, is 8-2 straight up and 10-0 “against the spread” in the last 10 games.
10-0 ATS.
That’s unbelievable for a “Gamblor’s” mind.  It’s actually mind-boggling.  That’s not even a trend.  It’s an outlier.  It really shouldn’t happen.  It implies that not only is this the “biggest” game for LNU, it’s the one they focus on all season.  What’s even more unbelievable is that Michigan was favored in 5 of those last 10 contests.  Meaning that LNU beat the spread when they were dogs AND when they were favored.
Looking at the numbers is something I do a lot.
This Season, Michigan is DOMINATING in every category.  It’s not even close (yes, LNU rushing defense.  But the best rushing team they’ve played up to PSU was ranked 57th.  PSU, ranked in the teens when it comes to rushing, managed some rushing yards last week but still lost).  LNU’s overall offense ranks in the 70’s and they come in at S&P+ overall rank of 33, down two slots after WINNING against PSU.  LNU hasn’t started the same 5 guys on the offensive line once this season.  Michigan effectively STEAMROLLED one of the better D-Lines in the B1G last Saturday, piling up yards on the ground.  And yet, somehow, I’m nervous heading into this game and I’m questioning the intangibles.
Michigan has lost 2 games to these clowns with Harbaugh at the helm (the other 6 losses in the last 8 came under Hoke and RichRod, who everyone inside and outside of the B1G beat regularly).  Harbaugh’s 2 losses were games that were lost in the Big House.  The Punt in 2015 (Where Michigan was 99% to win) and last season’s monsoon where Michigan’s John O’Korn tried to pass a waterlogged football in terrible conditions, turning it over 5 times (3 ints and 2 fumbles) in the 2nd half trying to overcome a 4 point deficit.  Come to think of it, Michigan in The Big House vs. LNU for Harbaugh has been a bad, if not terrible, thing.  These same LNU F-er’s broke Harbaugh’s arm (I’ll never forget that) in the Big House and ended his season in 1984.  Michigan went 6-6 that season (The MMQ’s Freshman Year and Bo’s worst season ever – Yeah, that sucked).  Harbaugh would be back, however, the following
season on his own “Revenge Tour” and Michigan DESTROYED a FAVORED LNU team 31-0 in East Lansing, holding Heisman hopeful Lorenzo “I’m Not” White to 47 yards in that contest, effectively taking him out of the Heisman race.  (The MMQ was in attendance with Special K and Special K’s older brother to witness that beatdown in person.  Special K – thanks for that ticket!!!)  Michigan would finish the “1985 Revenge Tour” number 2 overall (10-1-1) in the national rankings with a victory over Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl.  (Iowa and Chuck Long was the lone loss at 12-10 in Kinnick and Michigan tied the Illini 3-3 in Champaign)
But I digress.  Back to the intangibles:  Arrested LNU players (Assault, sexual assault, DUI’s, etc) with police records that are still on the team? Check.
Racist players re-instated on the team?  Check.
There will be LNU cheating in the secondary with grabby DBs, which, is a given.  Poking guys in the eyes – of course, what else do you expect from a bunch of cheaters?  Spitting, Fisticuffs and Nut-Sack Punches are just a sampling of LNU’s favorite post tackle rituals.  Referees with flags in their pockets – where else would they be?  Overall poor sportsmanship – win at any and all costs, gimmicks and chicanery are all just the tip of the ugly green iceberg.  Not to mention Sparty Bob is probably still running the F-ing clock in East Lansing.
Oh, and it’s supposed to rain, too!
You know what…
Screw all of that BS!!!
History gets righted on Saturday and the tradition of clobbering LNU 2 out of every 3 games (or more often) is going to be restored.  And the green slime is sent on their way to an 8-4 or 7-5 season.
Take Michigan and lay the 5 for $100
Take the OVER for $50

The Mailbag and Mid-Week Round-Up

The Mailbag
I just can’t disagree with you more about Shea.  He does not see wide open receivers, he is not accurate, he has the loaf of bread thing far too often, and he is very late with decision making (both when throwing or running).   I will be willing to bet you some decent coin that Shea causes us a loss due to the above mentioned short-comings.  I would love to see McCaffrey as the starter.  I think that he is every bit as good as Shea NOW, and I like the extra year of eligibility.

Superfan

Sigh…This discussion with you (and others) is really starting to wear thin on my nerves.  Shea is doing EXACTLY what a good to great QB should be doing:  Controlling the offense, not getting into trouble, and not forcing passes when receivers might not be as open as they appear.

HE’S ALSO LEADING THE TEAM.

That’s a HUGE intangible that can’t be seen or measured on film. I re-watched Saturday’s game and I also noticed a couple of plays where Shea could have gone deep.  I also put both sacks squarely on his shoulders as he could have gotten rid of the ball in both cases instead of eating it.  I’m trusting the coaching staff right now and believe that if McCaffery was playing that much better in practice, he’d see more playing time.  But everyone seems to be comfortable with Shea and while Michigan is winning, I don’t think any changes are imminent.  Now, if he does “blow a game” somewhere on this Journey, then yes, McCaffery should see more playing time.

And as long as Michigan keeps climbing in the S&P+ Stats, I’m incredibly happy with what’s happening in Ann Arbor.   Polls are useless.  Trust the numbers…Michigan jumping from 22 up to 4 is exactly what you want to happen.  Shea's doing fine...

“Revenge Tour”?  Isn’t that a little precocious?  Aren’t you supposed to brag and whoop it up AFTER you win the games???!!!

Heads up:  I didn’t coin the “Revenge Tour” phrase and I never talk it up early.  It was actually Winnovich in a post-game on-field interview that said, “The first game of the ‘Revenge Tour’ is behind us.”  So, I’ll give Chase the credit, but, DAMN, I LOVE THE WAY THIS TEAM IS THINKING!

“The revenge tour has officially commenced,” Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich said. “I was thinking about putting that for my next Instagram post.”

I guess Saturday pretty much falls into the “Big Game” category?  Does Harbaugh get the Sparty monkey off his back this time?

It could be argued (based on recruiting alone) that the “LNU” (Please address these these school names appropriately when responding to anything this blog puts out!!!)  monkey has already been tossed aside.  Michigan has been building their program for the future and LNU has been trying to do what it always does which is get the castoffs, coach them up and try to win close football games by any means necessary (grabbing defense, holding, etc.)  Moving forward, Michigan will have the overall better program and will be a better football program for years to come.

That being said – Uh, yeah.  Michigan has to prove it on the field.  Plain and simple.  No more moral victories or “what if” moments can plague this team at this point.  This is a “must win” game if ever there was one on the Michigan schedule or for Jim Harbaugh.  I almost hate to type that, but it’s true.  In fact, the next 5 games are must wins, if you will.  But this one is BIG without question.

Have you been following the NCAA Hoops Corruption Trial?  Any thoughts?

As a matter of fact, I have been following it and I’m a little surprised that there’s not more headlines out there.  In an extremely disappointing take, Coach K from Duke is stating that this is a “blip” and not prevalent in the sport of college hoops.

Are you F-ing kidding me, Coach K?

I want to know what color the sky is in Coach K’s world.  If he believes this is a blip and not mainstream, he’s seriously misguided, misinformed or is just choosing to ignore the big picture.  Which it seems like the I-I-I is also doing – head in the sand, “Na-na-na-na-na!!!”

“We haven’t followed it that much, to be quite frank,” Krzyzewski said at a Monday news conference. “I think it’s a minute. It’s a blip. It’s what’s happening — I mean it’s not.”

It’s very difficult for a reasonable mind to hear what’s being levied in these trial hearings and be convinced that college basketball is not corrupt at its core. For many fans, it just reinforces what was suspected all along and put succinctly years ago by late, candid UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian.
“Nine out of 10 schools are cheating,” Tarkanian said. “The other one is in last place.”
Every school that’s been named should go on high alert.  At some point, the I-I-I has to wake up and figure out how they’re going to punish these schools that have players that were receiving illegal benefits.  Death penalties shouldn’t be out of the question based on the I-I-I’s own rules and guidelines when it comes to “amateurism” and player compensation.  If they don’t do anything?  Then throw out the rule book and let professionalism into College Sports.

This actually makes what Beilein and Michigan have accomplished in the last 5 years that much more impressive.  Doing it clean in this environment is amazing at this point.  And Michigan was a program that was punished for being “the worst” during the Ed Martin Scandal years.  Michigan should be pushing the NCAA to enforce the rules to the Nth degree in all of this…

Bama Defensive Player Punches Mizzou Player
Alabama coach Nick Saban said Raekwon Davis will be disciplined for punching a Missouri player on Saturday.
Saban told reporters that he spoke with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey about Davis, who punched Missouri offensive lineman Kevin Pendleton several times in the fourth quarter of Alabama’s win over the Tigers.
“I visited with commissioner Sankey about Raekwon’s actions,” Saban said Monday. “We will handle that internally. We will have him do some things. I think it should affect his playing time in the future.”
I find it unbelievable that the SEC Conference (and all conferences for that matter)  doesn’t have something on the books that more or less forces a kid to sit for a game when something this egregious or blatant happens.
LNU Up To THEIR Old Tricks
An LNU player was guilty of something similar (eye poking) against PSU last Saturday (and I expect more of the same in East Lansing this Saturday).

Penalties played a key role in Penn State’s defeat. Of the six penalties the Nittany Lions committed, none may have been bigger than the unsportsmanlike conduct call on CJ Thorpe in the second quarter. After the Nittany Lion defense stuffed the Spartan offense on three consecutive plays from inside the 2-yard line to set up a 4th and goal, Thorpe was flagged for ‘retaliating’ after being poked in the eye. On the following play, Michigan State scored to tie the game.
Bosa Retiring From College Football- Withdraws From THE STU
I’m not surprised.  If anything, I was surprised it took this long.  From all the reports, it sounded like the only game he was going to be able to play in, if he was lucky, was the Michigan game.  I’m not sure why he had to withdraw from school as they don’t play “school” all that hard down in Columbus.  I  mean, he could have rehabbed and still been a leader in practice and maybe on the sidelines?  I dunno.  But he was a “Team Captain”, so bailing is kind of a big deal if you’re into that kind of thing.  Regardless, it’s still THE STU and Michigan needs to beat them as part of the Revenge Tour.
This Week In Schadenfreude
Plenty in here this week with Georgia, Miami, PSU and Washington all losing.  I can’t be rationale fans (which, let’s face it, no one is!) start calling for the firing of their otherwise successful head coaches.  Sure, that makes sense.  Just start cloning Satan so everyone can have their dream coach!
Dawg Fans are going insane claiming their program is headed down the toilet with Smart at the helm.

The Revenge Tour Begins! Swiss Cheese & Nobody Knows Nuthin'!

Okay.  So the title of this post is a cliché.   But IT’S A DAMN APPROPRIATE CLICHÉ!
I THOUGHT the Badgers would be ready for this game.  I KNEW that Michigan might have been winning against teams that simply weren’t that good.  I KNEW that there would be a day of reckoning at some point this season…
Saturday wasn’t it.
Michigan more or less dominated the cheeseheads from the opening kick until mid-way through the 4th quarter.  And Dominating isn’t even an appropriate word.
Michigan OWNED the Badgers.
Michigan could have scored more.  They chose not to.
The Defense held Hornibrook to 25 passing yards with 7 minutes and change to go in the 4th quarter, and then garbage time took over…and Hornibrook managed to get 75 more yards in meaningless football time.   Hornibrook had a QB rating with 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter of 0.7.  Yes, you read that right – 0.7!!!
25 passing yards…Let that sink in for a minute.
Michigan literally took their foot off the gas once they knew the game was out of reach.  That was at 31-7.  After the brilliant run by McCaffery.  Wiscy had nothing in the bag of tricks to come back from a 24-point deficit.
WISCY HAS NEVER BEEN BEHIND BY 24 POINTS IN THE LAST DECADE!
Okay, with the exception of that B1G Championship game against THE Sex Toy U.
But that’s it.
What really cracked me up?  The onsides kick after the last TD by Wiscy.  And this was after they punted on 4th down with 7 minutes to go…I thought Chryst was a good coach, but he’s proving me wrong with each and every game decision he makes…
NO ONE BEATS WISCY like Michigan just beat Wiscy.  Bill Connelly Agrees…
There were QB runs (Shea – 2nd quarter – McCaffery – 4th Quarter).  There were TD’s.  (too many to list).   There were INT’s for TD’s. Thank You Lavert Hill! (THAT was sweet!).  And there was some hard-core football played in Ann Arbor – the kind of football that Michigan Fans haven’t seen in a long time.
Yep – I’m not ready to proclaim it just yet, but the B1G Title for 2018 might have to go through the Wolverines.  Just a hunch.
Under the Lights is special in the Big House.  You can go to all the games you want during the day, but on a nice evening in Ann Arbor, there’s nothing quite like it.  The field looks bigger.  It’s in your face.  The crowd was TOTALLY into it.  And, yes, it’s always better when you win!
I’d like to say that Michigan is ready to go to East Lansing and kick some LNU Ass.  But that would be presumptuous.  And it would make me look like an Arrogant Ass.  But, hey, when you’re talking about the Little Brother, it’s all fair in love and war.
The Rest of the Mess

CUD- Complete Unmitigated Disasters – There Were Several

Cornsuckers – Nebraska was 98% to win the game when they recovered the onsides kick against Northwestern at the end of the game.
98%
That win percentage dropped to 92% when they pinned the Wildcats at the 1-yard line with 2 minutes left on the clock and no timeouts.  Sorry Frosty, but that loss is on you.  You recovered the onsides kick.  You HAVE TO BE ABLE TO GET A FIRST DOWN in that situation.  A first down and then you can run the clock out.  Instead, you went 3 and out and then your defense couldn’t get the job done.  What’s worse, you made a TERRIBLE decision going for it on 4th down in OT instead of kicking the Figgie (I get that you didn’t trust your kicker at that point).  98%.  That’s gotta’ be on the coach.  And no, no one wants to fire you even though articles were popping up everywhere with the frost buyout of $30M, including assistants.  But you need to take care of business better than that…

PSU – Franklin, Franklin, Franklin.  If you had LISTENED to the FMQ (and MMQ) you would have known that LNU literally baited you in to trying to rush the ball after that early 80+ yard run by Miles in the first quarter.  They let that happen in order to make you “think” you could keep running the ball.  McSorely should have been utilized way more than he was.  Yeah, he had an off game.  But jeez.  And LNU played with that “Chip” on their shoulder, which is always dangerous for the opposing team.  PSU is completely out of any CFP discussion and playing for a New Year’s Day game, if they’re lucky.

DAWGS of Georgia– No, you’re NOT THE 2ND coming of Alabama.  Frankly, I’m not sure you’re the 2nd best team in the SEC.  LSU sort of made a statement on Saturday that said, “Yeah, we lost a tough game to Gatorland.  But we’re not finished this season.  In fact, we’ve only just begun!”  If I was anyone else in the SEC (Bama) I’d be very worried about having to play in Death Valley this season.

Auburn – You beat Washington, a CFP Favorite to open the season.  And then you more or less flamed out.  What’s really sad is you have a Defense that is bordering on great (they get off the field a lot) and your offense can’t seem to support anything.  Tennessee hadn’t won an SEC game since 2016 and you were their victim.  At home.  The Torch and Pitchfork crowd wants blood.  The problem is that Malzhan isn’t going anywhere with a $24M buyout in his contract.  Auburn fans are going to suffer for a LONG TIME...

WVU – And here I was singing the praises of Holgersen and the ‘Neers just last week stating that they could be the Big iiX’s favorite to win the entire enchilada as their defense was playing better and I didn’t see Grier slipping up against anyone that was left on the schedule.  NOBODY KNOWS NUTHIN’!!!

CANES – Miami was still hanging by a thread in the CFP discussion and all they had to do was go to Virginia and take care of business.  That’s it.  Not only didn’t they accomplish that simple task, but they made the Cavalier’s look decent in the process of losing to them.  The ACC is a mess and Clemson, even though they didn’t play, is looking like less of a CFP due to the overall malaise that is hanging over the ACC right now.  Clemson is going to have to play for style points from here on out.

Washington – You were the one and only hope for the Pac 12.  Oregon “Stanforded” you with an OT win.  Peterson is probably sorry he left Boise where he could lose 1 or 2 games a season and the fans would still love him.  Now, he’s looking at potential Hot Seat issues as he tries to explain a loss to a rival.

Come Back Off The Ledge

The Gophers – You know, when you pull for a team to beat a team you really hate, you sort of start to feel the pain of those fans.  And believe me, when the Gopher QB threw that ball up for grabs in the 4th quarter, I had a bad feeling.  In fact, I had a bad feeling when the Gophers missed those figgies that would have tightened up the game.  That being said, I like where the Flecker is taking this team.  Patience, patience, patience…

Purdue– I know, they won and usually this section is for a team that lost.  But Purdue demolished the Illini.  And they are still 8 points away from being undefeated.  Purdue is probably going to ruin a lot more seasons before this season is over.  They don’t call them the SPOILERMAKERS for nothing.

Pitt – Seriously?  That game you played in South Bend on Saturday was like being at a strip club and having a lap dance that takes you to the edge and then doesn’t quite deliver.  Why bother getting that close and not closing the deal?  Again, Pitt under Narduzzi can find a way to win the Big Games but can’t win the games they should win....

We Won But…We Should Be Worried Week

Domers – As mentioned above, the domers have 5 games left where they’re probably a 60-70% favorite in each game.  But when you do the math, that means there’s only a 30-35% chance of the domers winning every game left on their schedule.  That’s the crux of playing an easy schedule in October and November.  When everyone thinks you should win easily, any close contest or even a loss really counts against you more than if you were playing a top 20 team.

THE STU– The Gophers exposed you.  I’m not sure that defense gets any better moving forward.  After 6 games, you are what you are.  THE STU is a great offensive team with a Defense problem.  In other words, THE STU is not that hard to score on, just like the co-eds that attend the university.  Again, just like the domers, they don’t get to improve because they don’t really play anyone until November 24th.  And that offense coming to Columbus is improving each and every week...

Shorthorns – Baylor made it a game and, by all accounts, the Shorthorns probably should have lost this game.  But they won, keeping their Big iiX record intact.  But now with WVU and others playing spoiler, do the Shorthorns have what it takes to keep things perfect in conference?  So far, they haven’t shown it….

LNU – You can only show up once you’re out of it.  Yep, Dautoionseoius can only coach them up when they have a “chip” on their shoulder:

Michigan State’s players all had a poker chip when they arrived at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, and when they walked into the locker room, they slammed them on the table.
It was all in an effort to regain an attitude that has served the Spartans well over coach Mark Dantonio’s tenure.
“We play better when we’ve got that chip-on-the-shoulder attitude,” senior wide receiver Felton Davis said. “We go into the weight room and our shirts have that chip on the side of it. That’s what we carry with us all the time, our lunch box. Just going to work and that’s how we like it.

The 5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief

  1. Denial and Isolation –Georgia Fan.  They believe that they can still win the SEC Championship and have a shot at the CFP.  But that was a blow-out loss.  Don’t be surprised when the next one happens.
  2. ANGER –Laters – Losing that Texas Game is going to loom larger and larger as the season wears on.  They might get revenge in the Big iiX Championship, but will it be enough to get them into the CFP?
  3. Bargaining –Georgia.  Just win out and everything will be fine!
  4. Depression –Wiscy.  I was shocked when the Wiscy Fans wouldn’t even participate in the “Light Up The Night!” in the Big House between the 3rd and 4th quarters!  I mean, all you had to do was turn the flashlight of your cell phone on!  For craps’s sake, be part of the event even if you’re team is getting crushed!
  5.  Acceptance – Cornhuskers, Auburn, PSU, Washington.  It’s over.  Spoiler time and praying for a New Year’s Day bowl…
Ref Rants

If anyone had a ref rant over the weekend, it has to be PSU.  I saw more holding in the replay of that game (against LNU) than I’ve seen all season THAT WAS NEVER CALLED!  The LNU secondary was getting away with murder!  PSU should file a formal complaint against the crew that was in Happy Valley.  I just hope the same crew isn’t in East Lansing this weekend.  If so, it’ll be a long day...

Buyer’s Remorse…

1.     Frost – Still no wins.  And the last loss is on Frost.  At least Frosty is in the record books as no Nebraska Team has ever gone 0-6.
2.    Kelly-When they win, win HUGE!  37-7 over the Cal Bears is impressive.  And could be an omen of things to come in Bruin Country!
3.    Taggart – Byes are nice…
Idle Thoughts from Friday/Saturday

-Corso is getting old.
-I hate to say they should let him go, but…
-I mean, I love the guy.
-But he’s just not able to do it any more…
-And I’m not mad because he picked Wiscy.
-If anything, I’m kind of happy he picked them!
-Whenever he picks Michigan, it’s usually a disaster.
-7:30 kicks suck..
-Night games – Love ‘em & Hate ‘em.
-You miss everything else going on
-And Saturday had to be a great sit on the couch and watch football day
-Granted, we were able to check out most of the games at the Tailgate behind us
-But still, I like getting into the games.
-The Gophers are looking good!
-Gophers - HOW DID YOU MISS THAT FIELD GOAL?  From the 8 yard line?
-Flecker – talk to that kicker.  Pump him up
-That was a terrible pass, Gophers– and intercepted.
-Sigh.  Gophers are Gophers
-LNU hanging with PSU
-The FMQ blew that call
-LNU with a “Chip” on their should is dangerous
-Great.  PSU out of any discussion.  One more team in the B1G playing for pride.
-And Michigan still has to play both of them.
-Lovely.
-Here we Go!
-The Big House under the lights is quite a sight!
-I know I hate night games, but I love ‘em too!
-Weather was actually quite balmy!
-Yes, I long johns are a great invention!
-Wiscy doesn’t have answer for our Defense.
-OK, well, that jet sweep seems to work for them.
-Hornibrook has nothing tonight.
-Shea is ON!
-Oh, LOOK AT THIS!  GO SHEA!!!!
-That is one of the best plays I’ve seen all season.
-Too bad we had to waste it on the Cheeseheads.
-Surprisingly, no penalties.
-Don’t look now, Cheeseheads down two scores.
-The Cheeseheads are NEVER down two scores.
-DOWN THREE SCORES!
-McCaffery!  It’s over!
-That was another sweet run!
-Michigan no longer has a QB problem.
-In fact, Michigan’s offense is coming into its own!
-If this was one of the better defenses in the B1G, I’m not impressed.
-But I don’t think it is.  Wiscy has a lot of injuries.
-So many upsets and near upsets!
-They call it “Shocktober” for a reason!
-CFP potentials took hits today.
-Even Bama was exposed…again.
-Could things be coming together in Ann Arbor?

THE MMQ’s “I DON’T NEED A COMMITTEE!”
The Committees Rankings come out October 30th, but it’s time for the MMQ to do a little logical review of who’s in and who’s out!  As of October 15th, there’s really only 8 teams left that have a shot at the CFP.

I’m not going to “rank” the teams per se, but I will tell you which conferences and teams have a favorable position and who’s in deep doo-doo.

SEC:  Bama – IN.  NEEDs A LOT of help:  LSU, Florida, Georgia.  Most likely representative:  Winner of the SEC Championship.  Georgia hurt themselves on Saturday, but can still control their destiny.  I still believe only one team from the SEC gets in.  I just don’t see how a 1-loss team from this conference gets in based on the SOS.

The B1G:  THE Sex Toy U and Michigan – IN.  NEEDs A LOT OF HELP:  IOWA-Maybe.  Wiscy and PSU are both out of the picture with Eliminator losses on Saturday.  Iowa, sitting with one loss to Wiscy, is the leader in the West at this point.  But they’re so under ranked nationally that I don’t see a way they can creep up in the polls high enough unless some other teams in the B1G lose and they win out.

ACC:  Clemson – IN - maybe.  The ACC is such a mess at this point that an argument could be made that even if Clemson goes undefeated, they may not be worthy, especially if the domers win out:

The domers:  Pitt screwed up on Saturday and that would have been the nail in the coffin for the domers.  However, a 12-0 domer team won’t be denied one of the 4 spots in the CFP if they run the table.  Still, there’s only a 35% chance of that happening, and each game will be a little more difficult as the season wears on.

The Big iiX:  IN – NOBODY.  Needs a LOT OF HELP:  WVU, Texas & Oklahoma.  This conference took a hit with the Laters losing to Texas.  WVU & Texas both need to win the rest and win the Big iiX Championship game to have any chance.  Losses to Iowa State and Maryland simply put them at the bottom of the 1-loss team column.

The Pac 12:  IN – Nobody.  Needs a lot of help:  Oregon - Maybe.  Now that Washington and Colorado have tanked, I really don’t see a team from this conference making the cut for the CFP.

The Hot Seat

ZAPPED List

We’ll keep track of who’s gone as the season progresses….
  1. Durkin – Criminal charges pending.  Can’t fire a guy and make him look guiltier.
  2. Mike Jinks – Bowling Green.  I guess starting out 1-6 in the MAC gets you canned now…
Electric Chair of Death Seat!
  1. Ash – Rutgers:   I guess Rutgers is simply going to ride this train till the end of his contract.  I mean, who are they going to get?
The Hot Seat

  1. Frost – Nebraska.  Until he wins a game, the seat’s warm
  2. Sumlin – Arizona.  What a disaster of a season…
  3. Malzhan – Losing to Tennessee is a fireable offense in Auburn
