 Regents Meeting - Student Survey

The regents met and I've linked to the Daily article that covered the meeting.  Schlissel disappointed - tell us something we don't know?.  Everyone evaluating the situation - yeah, but what are you going to DO?  Time is bought....But the end may still be near for BranDictator.  The student survey is pretty damaging....

Every time I think today’s youth is wasting their time or has no clue about what is going on, my faith is renewed in them with something like this.  I’m not asking everyone to read it in its entirety, but it’s enlightening and it’s something the ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT should have issued themselves vs. Michigan’s Student Government putting this together.  It really makes me feel good about the true Michigan community and I believe it objectively points out some glaring issues that BranDictator has created over the years.

I really don’t see how BranDictator survives this.  And the only way to mend the student and fan relations is to eliminate him and whoever else he may have brought in to be his “yes” men and start fresh.  There’s been too much damage.  Again, read the report for yourself to determine your own opinion, but none of this is good for BranDictator.

Some highlights:

Students rank what’s “Important to them” for buying tickets (lower the number, more important).  SOS, Price and Tradition are the top 3!  Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!!  In other words, if it’s not broken BranDictator, you shouldn’t break it!

Looks like if you do a Pareto of the population, 80% say that student tix need to be priced under $180.  $150 gets everyone back.  And that sounds about right, when compared to the rest of the B1G.

And, when the open ended question were summarized in word bubbles....the students absolutely NAILED IT!!!!

Homecoming Is Looking Up!

But for all the wrong reasons…Indiana lost their Starting QB Sudfeld for the season and he had been “the offense” in the Kevin Wilson scheme.  Wish guys didn’t get hurt in this sport, period.  But it’s a big part of the game.  Good or bad….

Of course, I don’t know who the back-up is, but Wilson will have some time and the QB will have a couple of games under his belt by then…

The Selection Committee Plot Thickens….

Bill Connelly cites CBS’s Jerry Palm who was one of thepress people that the CFP committee invited into the actual war room where the13 member board will meet to decide who the FF in college football will be.

The latest:  S-O-S is out (That’s Strength of Schedule – Not SAME ‘OLE SPARTY!!!).  As is margin of victory  - OUT.  As is a bunch of other valuable stuff that would make the decision on the 4^th team that gets in easier.  Because I agree with Bill, I think the top 3 are going to be fairly straight forward and no brainer type picks…Its number 4 that’s going to present a whole lotta’ issues….So, in the spirit of this blog…

Actually, the article is a good read and for anyone that has a team that might be sniffing at the play-offs, and especially that 4^th spot in the playoffs (sparty, domers).  You may want to peruse it as part of your lunch time reading material to begin to prepare how you want to tear apart the selection committee for not using X and Y at the holiday cocktail party/beer fest where the issue may come up in conversation.  Scratch that, it will come up in conversation because that’s all you’ll be thinking about after Thanksgiving so read the article and be prepared!

A New Twist – “Hire” Instead Of “Fire”!

There are now two websites that are taking an opposite approach to the “Fire Whoever” website mania that is all over the net. “Hire Mullen” and Mullen related themes having beenpopping up in Gatorland.  Clearly, thefan base is simply fed up with Muschamp, rightly or wrongly, but as we know here in B1G country, and especially Michigan’s fanbase, well, when they’re unhappy….Its going to take something big to make them happy.  Mullen might be the guy for Florida – if the fans are already behind it.

This Week’s Picks!

All right.  Time to either Get Busy Winning or Get Busy Losing….I guess it must be some anniversary of the Shawshank Redemption because I’ve seen it on a couple of time in the past week or so.  You are what you are after 6 weeks of play, so the spreads should be pretty accurate.   I’m not super excited about any of the picks, but we’re gonna do this and we’re gonna be aggressive!  Taking points has really burned me lately…So guess where I’m going?  You got it…

Baylor (-7) @ WVU:  Something about Baylor’s defense…one week they show up…the next week, nothing.  Baylor escaped TCU with the win, but I think that was their wake-up call.  WVU still hasn’t turned the corner…at least not enough to handle keeping up with Baylor.  I can’t remember seeing an o/u number of 80 on a college game.  But I can’t touch that one, so

Sparty (-15) @ IU:  I would have been ALL OVER Indiana and the points in this one if Sudfelt was still the QB.  Now…not so much.  Sparty covers easily in this one after their wake up call against the Boilers.

Regents Meet!

The Pizza Wars continue….Denise Illitch in her never ending fight to eliminate and banish the name “Dominos” from the entire English Language, gave a big juicy tidbit to the news yesterday that spread like wildfire on the internet and social media.  IF you haven’t seen the statement, here it is:

“The systems failed and there are a lot of issues we have to review.”

Reading between the lines:   

“Heh-heh, Dave.  I just got the most wonderful piece of news and MY bid for governor, if I so choose, or my guy that I want to back is now one up on you!”

And another source close to the Athletic Department confirmed that contact was made with 3 individuals about the AD job.  Don’t know why you’d be talking to someone without a move being eminent.

I received an e-mail from Jim G. commenting on my last post regarding Nick Roumel (I had no idea Jim and Nick were roommates!) and he also hoped that today would bring some sort of direction in the BranDictator situation:

I’m Really Starting to Believe All Those “This One Time At Band Camp…” Stories

Jeez…ohio is going to extreme lengths to make sure there is no sexual tension or emphasis anywhere in its Marching Band.  Maybe they will start to separate the bandsentirely and have the “male” marching band to be followed by the “female”marching band?

My take on Spencer’s take?  It’s unfortunately incredibly accurate.  Too many issues to list and they’ve all lead us to HERE…Where ever that is.  And how we get back to anything resembling Michigan Football is going to take years…maybe a lifetime at this point.  I dunno….but bringing winning and domination back to the Big House would be a good start.

Brady Hoke Loves You…No Really!!!

In what continues to be a New York level PR campaign to “change the image” of Michigan and the Athletics Department (have you noticed how BranDictator has completely dropped off the radar?), Brady Hoke sent an e-mail out to everyone on the season ticket list.  He loves you… Institutionally, man!   He really does!  (The hand clap could be heard when I opened this e-mail followed by a big bear hug…)

So, the spin doctoring continues and while a “win is a win” and everyone can celebrate, I have a feeling the mood meter will plunge in East Lansing at about 7:30 PM on October 25^th.   

I wonder what kind of e-mail Hoke is going to send then?

My guess is after BranDictator’s failed press tour, the PR firm simply threw their hands in the air and gave up on him, told him to go sit down in his office and never come out again.  Ever.  And if you do want to come out, you’d better raise your hand and ask for permission before you do or say ANYTHING.  Yeah…We’ve heard the last of BranDictator for the time being.

Nick Roumel Goes a Little Postal…But For Good Reason

I loved reading the Punt-Counterpunt that used to show up in the free program on home Saturdays but now resides on mgoblog.com on Friday or Saturday morning.  Nick Roumel is still doing his part, but his counter “punt” partner has changed over the years.  I asked a few people if they had seen Nick’s post prior to the Rutgers game.  Because I felt it was written in the true “Spirit of Michigan”, I’m reprinting here and linking to it, also.

In tribute to Heiko’s brilliant deployment of his specialty, medicine, allow me to analyze the program in light of mine, employment law. Our once storied athletic department has all the hallmarks of a dysfunctional workplace.

When David Brandon took over, he cleaned house. He fired an alarming number of athletic department coaches and staff, including long term employees going back to the Don Canham years. He did this with little tolerance; employees were fired for minor and subjective offenses—or, significantly, for failure to exercise appropriate supervision over subordinate employees. I know because I and our firm represented a few of them. Sure, any new boss has the right to have his own minions, but this purging seemed to be done with little regard for employees’ loyalty, nor their valuable institutional memory.

Double standards are another feature of the dysfunctional workplace. In contrast to the scrutiny afforded lower level employees, management is free to commit a multitude of boners with no consequences. Examples are easy to tick off. Botched coaching searches resulting in the inability to land candidates that wanted to come here. Assaults on the game day tradition also turned off the fan base, like the well-documented student seating fiasco. Game day blunders ranging from the advertising noodle, to bans on water and seat cushions, the Coca-Cola ticket giveaway, to overdone productions, and unnecessary, meaningless old rock songs played ad nauseum.

Our coach, who is hired to win with integrity, doesn't win. And now the integrity part is in question. Not only does Brady Hoke’s team perform worse than the sum of its parts, but the man seemingly lied to us about Brendan Gibbons. Lying, meanwhile, is the best case scenario regarding Shane Morris. Brandon fired former star and loyal athletic department staffer Jamie Morris for allegedly lying. But maybe Brandon needs to keep Hoke around, because a classic boss is always happy to let his subordinate managers twist in the wind to take the heat.

Another classic sign of a dysfunctional workplace is micromanagement. Why does the Athletic Director attend practices, and hover during locker room meetings? Why is he the one hiring the coordinators, and not his head coach?

Ignoring customers is another symptom. Good leaders solicit input before making changes, and learn from constructive feedback. This administration plugs its ears and goes “Nyah, nyah, nyah.” To its partial credit they reversed decision on smaller issues like the noodle and seat cushions – but only after fan outcry. But why aren’t they seeking feedback before making these changes?

Retaliating against critics on the inside can be done in secret. But how do you explain such actions as taking away the press pass of John U. Bacon, who bleeds Maize and Blue, in apparent reaction to Three And Out? If they’re doing this petty garbage to journalists, imagine what they might do to anybody who dares speak against them from within.

For the most part, nothing can be done about a dysfunctional workplace. But at a public university, we have a trump card - at least theoretically. The athletic department is answerable to the President of the University and the Regents. The question will be whether they will have the courage to do the right thing and clean house, or whether they will bury their heads in the sand and do nothing.

Uncertain. Our new President, Mark Schlissel had no experience with a high profile athletic department while at Rhode Island. As such, the risk is that his ears will be bent by a select few with access. Former Texas coach Mack Brown explained that at his University, a cadre of four to five influential donors had the leaders’ ears and were able to accomplish their agendas. At Michigan, I don’t believe the power structure is that linear, but do worry whether anyone can be the change agent that is so badly needed, especially with powerful and generous donors like Stephen Ross backing Brandon.

The bottom line is that the Michigan Regents are government officials. Raise your hand if you still have faith that government officials will ever do the right thing. ... Anyone?

Fans who feel helpless can only vote with their feet. An under-100,000 attendance threatens this administration. But they believe last week’s crisis has blown over, and that the Penn State night game will provide a solid attendance figure, and then all will shortly return to normal.

Do Michigan fans have the guts to boycott? I believe that the public outcry, culminating in the impromptu rally against Dave Brandon this week, shows that people who care about Michigan football still have collective power.

With all this, the result of today’s game against the Scarlet Knights is almost superfluous. While it would be nice to win, it should not divert from the legitimate criticism that lies at Brandon’s feet. It is our duty to speak out and do what we can to end this dysfunction. That does not make us fair weather fans. When one party to any relationship is treated with such disrespect, they have the right to rise up and resist. That does not make you disloyal, or a fair weather fan – it means you care.

I for one cannot take this anymore. Yes, I wrote earlier this season that I was past the point of having a Michigan loss ruin my week. But when the entire department is showing signs of being rotten to the core, it hurts - as a fan, an alumnus, and a writer who tries every week to bring a light hearted approach to this sport.

Today, my heart is not light. I ache for the players who try their damndest and those of us who support them. And I will not bear this dysfunction without dissent.

I'm a collector of the simple quotable quotes that great and not so great people have offered to the masses over the years.  I guess the Franklin Planner that everyone used to carry started me off on my little collection.  I've got a file that I open from time to time and just kind of absorb them all.  

I’ve come across a lot of Bukowski stuff in my lifetime.  He was an interesting character to say the least.  An author that lived in LA and more or less didn't give a crap as to whether you liked his stuff or not.  And he wasn't afraid to ask the tough questions or say the things that needed to be said....

 I’ve posted some of his quotes here in order to give you a better understanding of the man – just cause. 

 

But there’s one his quotes that I remembered stumbling upon a few years ago that’s kind of a new favorite with me.  Sort of explains this entire season in one shot:

PSU - I'm Not Happy....

Michigan wins Under the Lights (again) and it’s now 3-0 when playing a game at Michigan stadium that starts at 7:00 PM or later.  I appreciated and really enjoyed the first two under the lights games vs. what we witnessed on Saturday night.   Which is why I feel a little like Peter in “Office Space” trying to get today's post out….

But, before we get into all that, I have to say that the Tailgate for the “Big Games” still holds up to the billing!  Great food, great people and conversation are what it’s all about for this fan anymore.  I have to admit, when the day comes and I give up the season duckets (and its coming…I can feel it) I will continue to buy the parking pass and head down for the fun part of Michigan Football.  Yep, the tailgates can’t be beat!

The Maize and Blue won and while that is usually a reason to celebrate, for whatever reason, I sat at the after-tailgate thinking it wasn’t a great victory.  Let’s face it:  After the Rich Rod years and 500+ yards of offense on ONE SIDE OF THE BALL, a two team combined offensive production of less than 500 is, in a word:  Boring.  And sad.  Yes, I’m GLAD they won.  The players have worked hard and it would appear that Devin Gardner is once again a walking wounded soldier that continues to put himself onto the field of play regardless.  That’s called heart.  And Michigan has a lot of that…just maybe not enough good direction coming from this coaching staff.

Why am I not happy?  Am I like the little guy in the Incredibles that blasts Bob for being too good to their customers?

Why can’t I simply enjoy a victory over a scholarship depleted Nittany Lion team that has a first year head coach?  Oh, wait…Maybe that’s it.  Maybe it’s because the old Michigan would have DESTROYED a team like that.  And this Michigan now has a “Power 5” victory that shouldn’t have been that hard to get, frankly.  I’m not saying PSU is a pushover.  But here’s a program that has seen more turmoil in the last three years than anyone else you can point at.  And I saw a program that was wearing blue on that field on Saturday night that appears to be heading in a better direction with a young, dynamic coach that gets it. 

It wasn’t the team I wanted to have a bright, young, dynamic coach, obviously.  And that’s a big part of the reason as to why I’m not happy.

This season now has the feel that it’s only a matter of time before the other shoe drops and Michigan craps the bed.  Whether or not that happens on October 25^th in East Lansing is debatable, but there’s certain angst inside of a lot of fans that I know and talk to.  And that angst is this: With every win, we’re just delaying the inevitable. 

Hoke is over. I don’t see how it can be saved at this point. BranDictator is debatable, but the more I read into all the tea leaves that are getting paraded around, it’s starting to feel like that might be coming to an end as well.  Let’s face it:  BranDictator has really put himself in a hole.  He left a mult-million dollar a year job to take a $500,000 salary and some bonus money.  And he’s probably one of the most vilified people in the state of Michigan short of Kwame Kilpatrick.  That’s really bad…and is the State of Michigan lucky we got to see what this guy was like BEFORE he runs for the Governorship?  I’m not sure BranDictator could have won the office before all of this crap hit the fan…now…nope…no way. 

Why did Schlissel attend a practice mid-week last week?  Why was BranDictator noticeably absent from that practice?  And BranDictator hasn’t tweeted in at least a week…and his blog hasn’t posted in over a month.  I’m getting the sense that The Prez may be trying to get a handle on this hot mess and, as was discussed extensively at the tailgate, he’s probably wondering how in the world he was thrust into this situation so quickly.  I guarantee you this never happened at Rhode Island…or wherever it was he came from.

So, yeah, the win was nice.  I hate to see Gardner hurt again, because after Devin the depth chart is just ugly.  The Green Team in East Lansing and it’s fans are foaming at the mouth and can’t wait to bring the sacrificial Maize and Blue fatted calf to the altar of the college football gods and do what they are oh, so eager to do.  And they will be more than happy to hand that “embarrassing” loss to the Wolverines and end the current coaching regime.  Yep, they will be all too accommodating.  As they will probably say, “Hey, we’re family and family helps each other out.”   Sparty’s going to treat us kind of like the girl treats this poor shoe tying guy...

And I guess that’s another reason why I’m not happy.

What World IS THIS???

Can someone, ANYONE, explain to me how on God’s Green Earth the state of Mississippi has two undefeated college football teams in mid-October? And how one of those teams was a pre-season non-ranked team that is now the unanimous #1 team in the country?  Anyone?  It’s okay…I can’t explain it either.

What is frustrating is that I wouldn’t mind seeing MSU head coach Mullen lose one or two games as he is a coach that I had been watching for awhile….I guess after he spanked us in the Gator Bowl about 5 years ago is when I took notice.  Granted, Rich Rod was on his way out, but still.  He had a team with a DEFENSE that shut down a motivated Michigan offense. 

The Hawgs let me down and couldn’t seal the deal against Satan’s Warriors.  But they did enough damage with a 1 point loss that should put Bama below a lot of other 1 loss teams.  My guess is Bama loses again…somewhere along the way.

Sparty had problems with Perdon’t and I think they have always had problems with Perdon’t.  But, they won in the end with Defense…which, Sparty.

There are no undefeated Pac12 teams left.  So, who is the prettiest loser right now?  Oregon… I think. 

Baylor is the top dawg after beating TCU in the BigXII and will still have a spot in the MMQ Final Four.

Domers found a way to hold off UNC, but the committee is watching and waiting.  Big Game Saturday in Tallahassee.  There can be only one….

The 5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief

1.  Denial and Isolation:  Sparty – Still hoping and praying and saying all the right things that the committee might hear, but more than likely won’t “Listen” to.  Yeah, they’ll hear it….so what?
2. ANGER:  MICHIGAN FAN….Still here…AIN’T LEAVING!!!!  BranDictator I’m sure thinks everything is fine after a packed house and a win over a power 5.  Let’s see what Indiana an Maryland brings…
3. Bargaining:  Any 1 loss team in the top 10 has to be here.  “How can we get into the Final Four?  Who do we need to lose?”
4. Depression:  Michigan Fan still here.  Arizona fan probably new to this category and wishing they had a defense.  Hey Wildcats:  We have a solution for that.  His name is Hoke and he can help!  Indiana and Coach Wilson have to feel like crap losing their starting QB….
5. Acceptance: Anyone sitting with 4 losses wondering how they can get to 6 wins.
