Flanagan Wins 10K, Beilein Stays and MIS Memories

Michigan’s Ben Flanagan Shocks in the NCAA 10,000 Meter!!!

The Highlight Video!!!

The Celebration!!!

Michigan Senior Ben Flanagan wins the NCAA Championship in the Men’s 10,000 Meter!!!!

For those of you that don’t know, the 10,000 meter is about a 6-mile race and it takes a unique athlete to run that race.   It’s definitely a “Tweener” race as full out marathoners or distance runners don’t have the “kick” for it and middle-distance guys don’t have the lungs for it.  Every distance guy thinks he can run it, until he runs into a guy that can sprint after 5 and ¾ miles!!!

Flanagan's senior year included All-America honors, a regional title in cross country and a Big Ten championship in the 10,000 meters — and now the Holy Grail, a national championship.
"I just started freaking out," he said of crossing the finish line. "I can't believe it actually happened."

Watching Ben Kick on that final lap is absolutely amazing!  Steve Prefontaine images definitely came to mind watching Ben win in Oregon!!!

Please God No…Not Like This

Editor’s note:  This was written on Tuesday and Wednesday when it looked like there was a real possibility that Beilein might be going to the Pistons.  We all now know that this won’t be the case, but I’m posting this anyway….

This article made me ill as it sounds like something I could have logically put together.  However, based on the fact that I can’t look at Beilein being lured away by the pros objectively, I just keep sticking my head in the sand saying, “Go interview Izzo!”  I mean, Gores is an LNU grad and Izzo’s been looking for a pro gig for like, forever.

This is what started to make me nervous:

“I think it’s a real possibility. It would be great for both if it happens,” ESPN analyst Dan Dakich told The Detroit News. “For the Pistons, they get a guy who’s comfortable coaching anybody. They get a guy who has put a team together of young guys.
“John is one of the best at making the right pieces fit.”

And this didn’t help:

“When I first heard (of Beilein’s interest), I went through the scenarios in my head,” Tim McCormick, a former NBA player and current ESPN analyst, told The News. “That was a thought that popped into my mind. All coaches (want to see if) they can coach at the highest level. He’s a wonderful offensive coach.
“He can make the adjustment.”
No, no, no, NOOOOOO!!!!!

Well, maybe that’s why Beilein went out and found Yaklich.  I mean, I could sort of see him becoming the guy at Michigan and he’s a great defensive mind…But I truly believe Beilein and his approach with all different players and getting everyone into the same mindset is key.

He’s the Glue and the Grease.  Or in this case, the Maize and the Blue.

What’s even more disturbing (and logical – I’m letting my mind go here) is that Beilein has a lot of talent in the NBA that he knows and could probably get to come to Detroit.  It would be like putting the band back together, only at the next level.

Now, I’m not saying that an All-Beilein Reunion Team would have a shot at an NBA Title, but I’m certainly not going to say there’s not a chance in hell that they could pull it off.

Knowing Beilein…Yeah, he could do it.

And now we know this to be true:

And The Hits Just Keep On Coming For LNU

Under the category of “You can’t make this shit up” or “Don’t think it can get any worse?  Hold my Beer”, LNU now has a physics prof that likes to engage in sexual contact with his pet Basset Hound dog.

What puzzles me is how they somehow managed to figure this out?  They’re must have been someone that tipped off the authorities and they investigated and discovered evidence and made the arrest.

So add bestiality to the list of interesting university higher learning stuff at LNU.

Gotta’ Point This Out – Calling Out Michigan

The University of Michigan now employees 100 administration people who operate under the title of “Diversity”.

In total, the budget allotment for this group is $8.5M, with the highest paid director making close to $400K annually.

The University of Michigan Army of Diversity

And what do they add to the University’s Bottom line?  Nada – Zip -Zilch – Zero.  And what “Exactly” do these people do besides run around telling people to be “Diverse”???

It really grinds my gears that part of everyone’s tuition goes towards paying for something like this.

It should be an outrage.

I am long past the fact of understanding that higher education is a sham furthered by corporate need to have “college educated” people working for them.  Give me someone who’s willing to work hard, set goals and complete projects and I’ll train them to be what I want them to be.

From the Article:

If you fell out of your chair upon realizing that the University of Michigan has a full-time diversity staff of nearly one hundred employees, one of whom earns more than the president of the United States, you can be forgiven. I nearly did too.

We’ve previously noted that the diversity movement is taking on certain aspects of religious faith. It appears, however, that we missed a similarity: Like the priests of ancient Egypt who amassed huge fortunes for themselves and the medieval popes who sold forgiveness and indulgences, the diversity faithful have found profit in their beliefs.

In many ways the modern American university resembles the medieval cathedral - something that began as beautiful but became a monstrosity when its true purpose was lost.

Couldn’t have said it any better myself.

Good Article!!!
Growing up a mere 5 miles from MIS offered me a lot of opportunities to go to time trials and races.   I’ll never forget telling my old man about “Some grey-haired guy” that used to come around and hand out free time trial and race tix to all the tourist trap employees in the area.  (I worked at Mystery Hill as a Tour Guide).  My dad happened to be there one day when the guy showed up in a powder blue station wagon with tickets.
The guy:  Roger Penske
I was a kid and didn’t know anything then!!!  Anyway, say what you want to about stock cars, but they looked slow and boring compared to the open wheel Indy Cars that would light up MIS with speeds exceeding 200 mph!  (There used to be a rumor that the stock cars actually took the rear brakes off the car to lighten the load as the stock cars only needed brakes when they went into the pits.)
But the open wheel races were awesome!!  Those were the races to go to.
Anyway, I believe I attended the race referenced in the article in 1984 when Andretti beat Sneva by a nose.  Great race!!!
Throw Back Friday!
My old track coach has been going through his files and reached out to get my address.  He sent some photos that really took me back.  Can’t believe I was that young, athletic and in shape!!!

I’m the guy on the left kneeling with the 1983 State Meet T-shirt.

Outta' My Monday Mornin' Mind

HT to the late, great Bob Talbert for today’s post title.  Even though he was the biggest liberal that ever wrote for the Freep, I enjoyed reading his column when newspapers were still a “thing”.  Imagine that, you could read something or someone from the other side and not lose your sanity over it.  I guess things were more civil then?  Anyway, today feels like one of those Monday’s with everything that’s going on.  Specifically:

Beilein Interviews With The Pistons

This often-used clip (on this blog) immediately came to mind when I heard the news on Friday:

So, after a lot of careful thought and contemplation over the weekend (like – I would be so pissed if JB went to the Pistons, but I guess I would be interested in the Pistons again), IMHO, this is a way for Beilein to figure out his open market value actually is.  Let’s face facts:  Two NCAA Championship Runner Ups in a 5-year span (One to Louisville that was cheating and had to forfeit the NCAA Title).  Sweet 16 and Elite 8 Appearances.  More wins in the NCAA Tourney in last 5 seasons than any other active coach (24-12 overall NCAA record).  Creates NBA talent after 3-4 years that comes in to Ann Arbor as “development projects”.  Yes, you’re going to get the attention of the pro owners.

But Beilein’s style is NOT that of a pro coach.

I panicked at first, but then I realized that this was just an exercise for JB in order to get more money for him and his lieutenants.  Warde better cough it up.

JB is worth every penny.

“It’s Emphasized”

I wasn’t going to comment on this because it pissed me off when Charles said it initially.  But now the press won’t let it go.  I’m hoping that Harbaugh put it to rest when he responded to the question, “So, how do you feel about Woodson saying that the game isn’t emphasized?”

Harbaugh was asked if he was aware of Woodson’s remarks.
“It's been emphasized," Harbaugh said.
He was then asked if he took exception to the comments.
“It’s been emphasized,” he said.
Harbaugh then returned to the subject to make a final comment.
“And that’s coming from somebody who’s been there for every single day,” he said.

“It’s Emphasized.”  Should have been the End of quote.

My Thoughts:  Pretty much what Harbaugh WANTED to say: “F%$cking Eh its Emphasized!!!  And if you ask me again, I’m going to emphasize this cleat right up your ass!”

‘Nuff Said.

LNU Hasn’t Addressed The Real Problem…And There’s No Remorse
LNU is in the news again for its arrogance and lack of remorse as a result of the “settlement”.  I have a feeling, even though LNU is trying to put this behind them, that we may not have heard the final word on all of this.  John Bacon weighs in with his opinion and he hits the nail on the head:
Observers such as John U. Bacon, an author of 10 books on college athletics, said it reflects poorly on MSU that the school did not include an apology in the settlement.
“They have shown no compassion, no understanding, no sense of urgency in fixing what is wrong,” Bacon said. “The very qualities that led them into this mess are the very qualities that they are displaying now, which is arrogance.”
Typical reasons for not offering an apology is to avoid vulnerability to more lawsuits, and a higher settlement, Bacon said. But, he added, MSU had already reached a monetary figure.
“It's just mean-spirited,” Bacon said. “MSU should have apologized because they were wrong. Their employee assaulted their students. People at Michigan State knew about this and did not act appropriately … Turns out human beings like being treated by human beings and that is what is missing here.”
Uh…Yep.  Kind of what I’ve been saying all along.  LNU needs to atone and FIX THE PROBLEM!   That includes the Regents.
I hope everyone who votes remembers this when the time comes….

No OC For Michigan
“Does it bother you that Michigan isn’t naming and offensive coordinator?”
From what I remember as a student manager, there really was never an offensive coordinator that ran the entire offense and called the plays under Schembechler.  Ultimately, I recall several individuals making general suggestions regarding down and distance and then Bo more or less okaying or making a decision.  The image of one guy running the offense (or defense) doesn’t burn in my brain.  Yeah, Moeller was the guy that sat in the booth.
But Cameron (QB’s and Receivers), Hanlon & Miles (O-Line), and Moeller (OC) were more or less the collection of offensive gurus that made the offense click.  But even Moeller would admit that he didn’t “Run the Entire Show” on the offense.  That was more or less Bo himself and I think that’s kind of how Harbaugh considers himself.  Everyone pretty much had an equal say, but the buck stopped at the top.
To answer the question:  Does it bother me?  It will BEGIN to bother me if the problems on the offense still have not been corrected.  But everything coming out of the Spring Practices lead me to believe that’s not the case.
SuperFan and Boycotting
Hi Russ,
I must fully agree with your assessment that the most effective tactic is to boycott the advertisers rather than the channel.  After all, unless you are a Nielson family, nobody knows you are boycotting.
However, I think that to be effective, it must be an active rather than passive boycott.  Thus we must make note of the advertisers and actively contact them letting them know that as long as they are a sponsor of X channel or program, you will NOT buy their shit.
At the height of the Anthem protest last season, I was about to try to launch a preemptive boycott of any Superbowl advertisers.  The idea being that it would take very little effort to cause a reduction of ad rates.

Good idea.  And viewers are leaving overly-liberal, far left political views behind
We’re in a very interesting cycle as far as television is concerned.  The majority of the public is speaking with their remotes.  CNN has lost 35% of its viewership due to “Fake News” and didn’t land program in the top 25 of news programs.  All the networks are suffering from a lot of “political” views that aren’t popular with Americans.  Comcast (Xfinity) is watching as millennials et al are beginning to request a drop of the ESPN library of channels and are “Cutting the Cord” as other options of watching programming and sports in particular become available.   And if they continue to politicize and create policies that turn the majority of people off, well, the financial impact will become an even greater burden.
It will be interesting to see where Television goes in the future.  But yeah, I remember who advertises where and try not to spend my money there…

Satan And The Team Run Out of Gas!!!
This is classic and couldn’t have happened to a nicer team!!!
Alabama’s “Lake Day” on Lake Tuscaloosa ended up as a slight disaster when Satan’s boat ran out of go-go juice.  I find it hard to believe a guy that anal didn’t have enough gas to last the trip!!!
RALLY GOOSE!

I’m really not sure how to feel about this because I HATE CANADIAN GEESE!  They shit all over, ruin decks and lawns, and are generally a nuisance.  However, after this bird-brain crashed into the scoreboard at the CoPa, Tiger’s Management and Fans have proclaimed it to be the “Rally Goose”, since the Kitty Cats had won 4 in a row after the incident (until yesterday’s loss to the hapless Blue-Jays).   And now the Tigers are saying they’re not dropping the “Rally Goose” meme after 1 loss.
Lovely.  Just ducky.
A Canadian Goose is now the Tiger’s motivator.
All You Want is to Have A Nice Career With a Few Perks…
Mark Reuss, a locally well-known auto exec, has now become immortalized as “The Driver” of an Indy Race Pace Car CRASHES into the wall right before the start of the Detroit Gran Prix.  His crash delayed the start of the race by nearly 40 minutes while the track crews cleaned up the mess.  Reuss will now be forever known as “That GM Guy” that piled a Corvette into the wall.
Classic.
I have to admit that I bet there are a LOT OF SUPPLIERS that were cackling with glee over all this as GM has been somewhat challenging to deal with at times.

Baseball Scheduling In a Nutshell…

Why don’t we see the Yankees at the CoPa as much as we used to?  Divisional races and interleague play.

Get rid of the Interleague and bring back traditional rivalries.  It would be better for the game.

Friday Round-Up, Mailbag & More

Happy June!  And can someone tell me where May went

Holy Sh@%#t It’s Christmas!!!

I sometimes think of this song when I hear really good news!!!  I dare you to listen and not think about it next time you hear something really surprising that makes you feel good!!

Yep – Slip that one into your Christmas Holiday Music Selection and watch the reactions!!

Anyway, that’s how I felt on Wednesday when I heard these two items, almost announced at the same time!

When the news that Matthews would be back hit, more news on Jalen Wilson (recruited by Kansas and UCLA) committing to Michigan happened on the SAME DAY!!!

Yes, College Hoops excites me as much as Football when Michigan is doing this well!  Michigan is now FAVORED to win the B1G (which – is that bad news?).

Ward Will Return To LNU

In what can only be described as a confounding move, Nick Ward will return for another season.  I say confounding rather than confusing as Ward appeared to be an easy NBA pick-up from a team looking for a utility player with size.  And seeing as how LNU has moved toward the 1 and done model, it was easy to figure Ward would move on.  And the fact that he was more or less benched in the 2nd half of the Tourney game against the Cuse made it even more likely that Ward would bolt.

Now, LNU will be another “favorite” to win the B1G.

Michael or LeBron???

So this was a thing the other night as I watched LeBron win a Game 7 with a bunch of friends and the question was:  Michael or LeBron??

I of course am of the age to have seen both play, in real time and not on YouTube Video re-runs.  Today’s younger generation only knows LeBron.   There was a young person in the room and they stated that LeBron’s legacy certainly had to be greater than Michael’s due to the fact that he has more NBA finals appearances and has accomplished that feat with less talent surrounding him than MJ had.  He also argued that the NBA has changed in 20 years and that winning consistently is not as “Easy” as it used to be.  (So – again, tell me how were seeing the GSW and the Cavs in a 4th NBA FINALS if it’s not as easy????).

My argument was (and still is) that Michael won against WAY BETTER Competition and could have probably won more, had he not been playing against the GREATEST TEAMS from Boston and Detroit in the Eastern Conference.  I will say that the Bird/Thomas teams were arguably in the top 10 of the NBA’s greatest franchises/teams of all time.  I can count another two NBA Finals appearances for the Bulls and possibly another Championship had Boston and Detroit not been in the picture.

But I’ll say this:  If LeBron can put the same magic on the floor against what is probably the best collection of NBA talent that plays for the GSW, than I will definitely consider the fact that LeBron might be better than my current NBA GOAT.

Which is MJ.  Until then, leave it alone.

Chip Patterson On Shea Patterson

It’s weird that I’ve posted two things by Chip Patterson within a week of each other.  But he interviewed Shea Patterson regarding his time at Ole Miss.

"I love Coach Freeze, but I just wish things had gone differently," Patterson told ESPN's Edward Aschoff. "That ultimately affected us as a team. We could only keep it together so much."
Patterson also said that Ole Miss led him to believe that there was "no way" the Rebels were going to receive a bowl ban for the 2018 season after the school self-imposed a bowl ban for 2017 in the wake of the NCAA's investigation into violations by the football program.

Mailbag, Texts and Tweets

I have been advocating boycotting certain channels on TV.  ABC/TBS are both on the list and I received a social media message from SuperFan stating:

Russ:  Unfortunately - We may need to add ESPN to your list.

While I get that, I started thinking about how much I watch ESPN and ABC (especially in the fall and have determined that I will flip even more often than I do to NOT WATCH THE ADVERTISING and boycott anyone who is advertising on the networks.

I just can’t boycott the channels entirely.  I’m weak that way….

More LNU Feedback!!!

And this e-mail response from a newer loyal readet to last week’s jab at LNU and the individual that claimed I was taking the LNU thing “too far”.

(Copied and edited for some language)

In regard to this Knob:
This reminds me of the joke about the young guy that wanted to be a Pirate.  He went to the dock, got accepted on a ship and set about learning the way of the Pirates.  Into the journey a while, he had cravings, like any good young lad.  He asked around a bit and was told to go stick his “junk” in the barrel under the main mast and he would get a knobber.  This went on a few weeks until one day he poked his wiener in and nothing happened.  He pulled it out, reinserted it and nothing.  He knocked on the top of the barrel, nothing.  Finally, he asked the guy behind him what the deal was.  The old, salty Pirate looked at him and said “It’s your day in the barrel, Mate”.

IT IS LNU/MSU’s DAY IN THE F’ING BARREL.  GET OVER IT, GET USED TO IT, QUIT ACTING LIKE ABUNCH OF PUSSIES,  GET IN THE F#$%KING BARREL.  300 ABUSED YOUNG GIRLS.  HE’S ON A PAR, OR ABOVE, JEFFREY F’ING DAHMER.  AT LEAST HIS VICTIMS DID NOT HAVE TO LIVE WITH THIS ALL THEIR LIVES.

So, yeah, I’m not the only guy PISSED OFF with LNU!!!

As A Poker Player, This Is a Great Read!!!

I was surprised this article didn’t mention “Cada’s Room”, which he opened just off M-59 In Shelby Township right after he won the WSOP.  Unfortunately, Cada’s Room had to close after they were caught repeatedly serving minors.

But what was cool was that on certain nights, Joe Cada would come in and play the lower limits with the regulars as a way to get people and poker players in the door.   Yours truly actually won a pot off Joe the old-fashioned way:  I caught him in a rather elaborate bluff and called him down.
