The First MMQ of 2016!

It’s here!  It’s here!  The First MMQ of the Season!

The season has begun!  The pomp and circumstance, The Bands and all the pageantry rolled out and accounted for!  The big game Kick-offs for the inaugural weekend!  Some fans are still smiling (Badgers, Seminoles, Longhorns, Cougars!)  and some fans are hiding and dying(Southern Purple Kittys, Rebels, Domers, Laters)!  Some teams are riding the high of 1-0 and other teams are picking themselves up and dusting themselves off as they convince themselves that a 1-loss team can still make the CFP!  Everybody learned something about their team this weekend…

The Question the MMQ wants to answer:  What did Michigan Learn?

Michigan Fans learned the following:  Michigan can rush the ball (against Hawaii) and  Michigan can pass the ball (against Hawaii) for a total of 512 total yards that was pretty balanced.  And Michigan is pretty good on defense only allowing 232 total yards (against Hawaii) and the defense scored twice.

For comparison purposes, I pulled up the box score from the Hawaii-Cal game just to have a looky-see and figure out if there’s anything that could be gleaned.  Keep in mind that a lot of prognosticators have California on a list for PAC12 Darkhorse team of the year….

Hawaii had 234 yards passing and 248 yards rushing for just shy of 500 yards of total offense against Cal.  On Defense, Hawaii gave up 441 yards passing and 189 on the ground to Cal.  Hawaii didn’t score as much as Cal, but that might have been Cal’s defense hanging tough in the red-zone.

In contrast, Michigan defense didn’t let Hawaii get to positive Total Yards until the middle of the 2nd quarter.  And with the defense also scoring twice, the Time of Possession was actually lost to Hawaii.  And a lot of the starters were out before the middle of the 3rd quarter.

And I have no idea if Michigan can Punt or kick a Field Goal…I’m ASSUMING they can buy we didn’t see it on Saturday.

Does all of this mean anything?  Hard to say.  I think Michigan ran a pretty vanilla package on offense because Hawaii wasn’t able to stop much of anything.  And then on Defense, Michigan was able to play some pretty straight up man coverage and Hawaii simply couldn’t break the stranglehold that the corners and linebackers were putting on receivers.  And the Hawaii ground game was non-existent.

I said it last week and I’ll say it again – Give Harbaugh a single week with a game tape and you’re going to have a hard time doing much of anything if you don’t put a wrinkle or two in to disguise what you’re trying to do.

I’ll also say this:  The Wiscy game just got a little more interesting and I’m glad that game is in Ann Arbor.  But the reality is that it might be difficult to figure out how good Michigan is before October 29th.

Bring on the Central Florida Knights!

The Rest of the Mess

Lets’ start right at the top and work our way down.

Satan’s Warriors vs. the Rubbers:  I was interested in this game and it was actually looking like the Rubbers would hang with Satan’s Warriors until the dam broke…and did it ever break.  I believe Bama scored three times in as many minutes to break open a 17 point differential and never looked back…While the rest of the SEC is a mess that even Finebaum can’t sugarcoat (7 SEC teams LOSE in the opening weekend), the Crimson Tide appear to be okay…I’ll pass along more judgment on the SEC in later weeks after we’ve seen what becomes of the early losers, but the OVERRATED term may get used more than once this season when referring to the “Best Conference EVER!”  Only issue I have:  Bama did not look good early.  What if they get better?  Yikes….

Clemson @ Auburn:  Malzhan’s seat didn’t cool off any as it appeared that Tigers of Auburn kind of had the Tigers of Clemson in a place where they could have beat them.  But alas, the Auburn kitty’s simply couldn’t deliver in the end.  Gus’ seat is getting warmer by the minute and he needs a big win SOON to keep the Torch and Pitchfork crowd at bay….

Laters @ Houston:  Normally, I only comment on the games I can watch and seeing as how this game was on at the same time as Michigan-Hawaii, well, I’ll be honest and say I didn’t see it.  But I saw the re-caps and replays.  Ouch Oklahoma.  You had to know that Houston was bringing everything to this game.  Not to mention that the Kick-6 reared its ugly head and you didn’t see it coming and didn’t respond very well.  I won’t say the road is difficult for the Laters at this point, but it certainly didn’t get any easier.  Can Houston plan on a seat in the 4 team CFP?  Look – Lots and LOTS of football left to be played.  When it’s all said and done, I’ll render an opinion on Houston or a Group of 5 school making the CFP.  Let’s not put carts before horses yet!

LSU @ Wiscy at Lambeau Field:  So much for worrying about and penalizing Lambeau Leaps Mr. Mad Hatter!  The Hatter is going to jump up to the very top of the Hot Seat List with his team’s less than inspired performance up in Wisconsin. Not only that, but this CLASSLESS ACT at the end of the gameshould have the Hatter in even more hot water, but SEC fans love this kind ofcrap…

Les made Boutte call Dixon and apologize on Sunday…But just words man…just words…

And all B1G fans can go ahead and add another worry bead to the B1G West and B1G East crossover schedules for teams that have to play Wiscy as they looked mighty impressive in the season opener.  Maybe I was a little too hard on Chryst in my pre-season preview.  Wiscy looks for real, at least to this fan, against what was supposed to be superior SEC talent.

Domers @ Texas:  Hee-hee….HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  I love it when the Domers lose close!  I Really, REALLY do!  The domers head coach should also be moved WAY UP ON THE HOT SEAT for more or less being a complete dolt.  Kiser was the QB that was responsible for 250+ yards of offense while Zaier accounted for 30 something…And yet Kelly couldn’t make up his mind on a starter and kept putting Zaier back in the game!  Hee-heeeee!  For the pure vitriol that Domer Nation has for this clown, visit ndnation and read the boards.  That fan base is PISSED!  Kudos to Strong and Texas, but even he knows that they wrap fish in yesterday’s news and he needs to keep it going this season.

Ole Miss @ FSU:  This game was starting to look ugly early and I was starting to think that maybe Jimbo  simply didn’t have it in him any more…you know, getting a team pumped up for a big game.  Then the Seminoles scored at the end of the half, scored quickly to start the 3rd and really never looked back.  Add Hugh Freeze to the Hot Seat list with this loss and all the other crap that’s going down in the NCAA investigation of Ole Miss.  He might not finish the season.

Furman @ Sparty:  Saw a lot of this game and, frankly, if I was a Sparty fan I’d be nervous.  They didn’t look good.  Looked sloppy at times and didn’t have the same Sparty defiance and attitude as past teams.  I’ll chalk it up to opening game whatever and make a true statement after next week. But Sparty’s schedule early is daunting….

Stanford vs. K-State:  Solid outing by the Cardinal.  Shaw may be the PAC12 conference’s only hope with UCLA, USC and everyone else in the South Losing.   Washington also won, but the CFP party demands excellence.

The 5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief

  1.  Denial and Isolation – Anybody with one loss falls into this category.  This would be the “We looked great, there’s things we need to work on and this loss isn’t going to hurt us in the long run” crowd.  Yes – You know who you are, Domer Fan.  And Domer fan seems to feel even worse than most….And it’s odd because once Kelly just let’s Kiser take the helm, I think a lot of the Domer problems might be solved.

  2. ANGER – Anybody that lost a nail-biter or that got upset on National Television falls into this category.  “Jesus Tap Dancin’ Christ!  How in the Blankety-Blank did we lose

to THAT Team?  They’re not even preseason ranked and we were double digit favorites, fergodsakes!”  Add the LSU Kitties, Domers and Laters into this category as well.
  3.
  4. Bargaining – If you’re already down here….Well, than you weren’t planning on having much of a season to begin with.  I won’t go into names, but any fan supporting a school that was preseason ranked in the bottom of their conference is already bargaining stating things like “maybe we can upset THEM.”

  5. Depression – Again, see Bargaining.

  6. Acceptance – Can’t put anyone here yet!  Still too early in the Season!

Idle Thoughts from Saturday (& Sunday and Monday)!

-I know, I know….I forgot a Pre-Season “Idle Thoughts” section in the Spectacular.

-3 fans mentioned it.  You people really DO read this stuff!

-I missed the pre-season idle thoughts, but how about some game week and first game stuff?

-I love summer, but the heat does get to me more now.

-I love Ann Arbor in the fall….There’s no place I’d rather be.

-From September 1st through Christmas.  I could live here 4 months a year.

-Once January rolls around, I’d be looking for warmer places, though….

-Mentioned at the Tailgate:  What happened to the Ann Arbor Canner Corps?

-They need to hang a help wanted sign up somewhere…

-It’s making the Can Game more difficult than usual…

-AP was way below average for Can Game Points in the home opener!

-Noon Kick-Off however does make scoring more difficult…

-LOTS of people swung by the tailgate!

-Michigan Games have become a great Social Event!

-People I haven’t seen in years mosey by the corner of Hoover and Greene ‘cause they ALL KNOW that’s where the Tailgate Crowd is gonna be!

-Total Tailgate Head Count: 50+ The Core Crowd was 8 but the swing-throughs and the “can we leave our stuff here?” crowd was 40+.

-30+ Years in the same spot.  I started to think about any PLACE or places I go to or have been going to for 31 years on an annual basis.

-You know – Same Time, Same Place kind of thing….

-Besides the house I grew up in…

-It was a tough question.  I couldn’t come up with very many.

-However, someone else said it but I truly believe it:  Michigan Football is the Religion and Saturday is the Holy Day of Obligation! - BU

-And as the Tailgate of the Week Shirt Stated:  “It’s Saturday… It’s Ann Arbor… It’s a BIG GAME!!!”

-Stadium AT CAPACITY for a Labor Day Weekend, Ball (and Boob) sweating game…

-Even the students are mostly on time….Harbaugh affect?

-It’ll be interesting to see if it lasts…

-New Drum Major NAILED IT!  (Doesn’t matter if she’s female – she did it!)

-Fly-over was cool.  They’re always cool.

-Kick-Off and the 2016 season has begun!

-Defense – extraordinary….

-Offense – I was a little concerned when Speight decided to hand Hawaii the ball on the first play from scrimmage.

-Shouldn’t have been.  Speight looked pretty good.

-Jeez – Who ISN’T in the Big House?   Michael Jordan, Charles Woodson, Lamar Woodley, derek Jeter, and more Michigan celebrities….

-Hope Michigan can live up to all this hype!

-Band Half Time Show was classic!  Please – MORE LIKE THAT!

-For those of you that weren’t there – Great use of Video Boards, Coach Harbaugh’s recruiting antics and it was humorous!

-Keep telling yourself this is just Hawaii.

-Hawaii travelled ¾’s of the way around the world in the last two weeks to play football (20,000 miles).

-That’s going to have an impact on anyone at any age.

-This Evans kid looks pretty good, but he had holes the size of a double wide to run though!

-Ergo - Kudos to the offensive line.

-Peppers is going to be something special.

-I almost wished Michigan had opened with someone where the starters would have played the entire game.

The Hot Seat

Week #1’s Hot Seat Mascot is always kind of exciting.  Yes, the Pre-season is also exciting, but the Week #1 is the first time we all get to vote.  And while pretty much everyone worthy makes the HSMP (Hot Seat Mascot Playoffs), I think it’s the Hot Seat Mascots at the beginning that can endure the entire season that are the most fun to watch!  Without further ado, Week #1’s Hot Seat Mascot – Actress Margot Robie!

The Hot Seat

  1. Miles – LSU.  After that un-impressive debut with a Top 5 team, Miles’ seat is gonna be warm this week.  If the Tigers lose any more games in September, The Hatter may not make it through October.  Those are NOT patient fans in Louisiana!
  2. Malzhan  - Auburn.  See LSU.
  3. Stoops – Oklahoma.  Poor Bob can’t catch a break.  Even after making the CFP last season, Hard Core Sooner fans want him GONE
  4. Freeze – Ole Miss.   This isn’t a good start for Hugh and again, see NCAA INVESTIGATION and you’ll have everything you need to know about ole Hugh..
  5. Sumlin – Texas A&M.   He won so cooled off a litte….
  6. Mora – UCLA.  He lost so he’s on the list…
  7. Muschamp  - South Carolina.  See Sumlin.
  8. Kelly – Domers.   So much hate for Kelly out there.  Luckily $warbuck$ loves him.  I think he’ll have a job for life or until Domer fans quit buying tickets.
  9. Whoever’s coaching USC:  That loss hurt.
  10. Jones – Tennessee.  You can’t just squeeze by App State in OT and not expect to make the list….
  11. Hazell  - Purdue
  12. Adazzio  - Boston College
  13. Riley  - Nebraska
  14. Charlie Strong  - Texas.  I’m keeping Charlie on here cause Texas fans are like SEC fans.  What have you done for me lately?

Coaches with desk chairs that are getting warm:

Richt – Miami

Mullen - Miss State

Johnson – Georgia Tech

Side NFL NOTE:  Lions CUT Jake Ruddock after a 3 TD 250+ yard passing performance against Buffalo.  Vikings TRADE to get Sam Bradford from the Eagles.

Which was the dumber move?  Discuss!

First Weekend Friday!

Talk about shattering some dreams quickly!  The Cremesicles and Furry Rodents were BOTH EXPOSED on the first evening of meaningful games and may have everyone scratching their heads about who is good and who isn’t….That’s why they play the games in stadiums and they don’t play them on paper….Both these fan bases will get a special honor and recognition in the Monday edition of the “5 Stages of Slappy Fan Grief”.

I, along with the rest of the country didn’t get to see the UT vs App State NEAR reincarnation of “The Horror” of 2007 live but we did see ESPN look ins.  App State goes into the second biggest house and almost pulls off the miracle, again.  And if their coach hadn’t had his head up is own arse in the final minutes (and if they would have made that extra point) there probably wouldn’t have been an OT.

I DID see a lot of the little “m” game and I guess you can say one of two things:  That one’s out of their system as I believe the Gophers did just about everything you can do to try to lose a game (snapping out of the endzone and a game record four (4!) defensive ejections for targeting).  Claeys said afterwards he wasn’t sure that Minnesota had even had one ejection (I can THINK of one that SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED that wasn’t) since the rule was put in place.  OR, secondly and maybe closer to the truth:  The Fuzzy Rodents aren’t that good.  Which way the gophers go will reveal itself as the season moves forward, but sheesh…

It’s funny when football Finally gets here.  The countdowns, the talk, all the stuff leading up to it and suddenly:  BOOM!  There’s games and reality rears its ugly head!

I watched the Cal-Hawaii game last Friday.  Most of it anyway.  I didn’t see anything that made me regret my Michigan to cover the 41 at home pick too much, and Hawaii turned the ball over 5 times against what is supposed to be a rebuilding Cal Bear defense.

That’s not good….for Hawaii.

Hawaii also made public (for whatever reason) a request to see the Michigan scrimmage tape.  The request is so asinine that I can’t believe the Hawaii coaching staff actually made it and I’m not sure what their motivation was for making it (the request).  I can tell you that this was probably the look on Jimmy’s face when he heard they were asking:

Another Newsy type item that I have to comment on, and this can only be filed under one heading:  The “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (WTF) are you THINKING!!!!” by having a Joe Paterno Commemoration day before the Temple Game to recognize the fact that it was exactly 50 years ago that JoPa took the field as a head coach….I wonder if James Franklin was consulted on this?  IF he was, I wonder what his opinion was regarding the question:  “Do you think this is a good idea?  Yes or no?”

Let me ask you something:  Is Temple going to recognize and honor Bill Cosby as well?  Maybe Michigan can bring back Ted Kazinski to Ann Arbor and have him be an honorary captain?  I know JoPa didn’t do the molesting…but furgodsakes HE KNEW ABOUT IT AND DID NOTHING!!!!   Let JoPa and everything associated with the last 40 years go PSU….Let it go and chalk this up as a ….BAD IDEA.

Something else that I’ve been thinking about is the fact that I didn’t really do any deep dives into any potential “Dark Horses” that people don’t see coming in the Power 5 conferences.  So, I’ll make up for that oversight right now!  In no particular order, here goes:

ACC Coastal

I’m not even sure who the favorite is at this point, but I don’t see Duke repeating as the champ.  I believe that a team that might – MIGHT surprise some people and has an outside shot of making the ACC championship is Virginia Tech under former Memphis head coach Justin Fuente.  They just might be something special.   Also watch:  Miami

ACC Atlantic

While they’re not a complete Dark Horse, I do like Louisville to upset either Clemson or FSU.  If they can get past both, look out!

SEC East

The SEC East is the really bad half of the SEC.  And I think everyone kind of has the Cremesicles winning the East this season (maybe not so much now) and some even have the Cremesicles in the CFP.  A good Dark Horse to watch here even though the won the East last year will be Florida.

SEC West

I always go with these guys and sooner or later, BB is going to come through for me!  Arkansas is the perennial pick of dreamers and hopers.  I’ll do it again and say that the Hogs have a punchers chance to win the West.

Big XII

Even though they’re still 10 teams in the BigXII….the Sooners are eveybody’s favorite.  But I’m going to say that even though TCU will be tough, they won’t be as tough as everyone thinks.  Watch out for Burnt Orange Nation, a new offense and a motivated coach…and if they can get past the domers early, well, winning the first one is the hardest, sometimes. Not So Dark Horses for invites to the conference:  Cincinnati and Houston.  Dark Horses:  U-Conn and Memphis.

Pac 12 North

Again, I’m not even sure who the favorite is (Washington’s Huskies perhaps) but a team I’ll be watching with a record setting returning QB is Washingon State.  Coached by the Pirate, Mr. Leach, the Wazoos may surprise some people this season.

Pac 12 South

I guess UCLA is the favorite and my pick of Stanford is a bit of a dark horse pick, but if someone were to really come out of left field it would be Rich Rod and the Wildcats that would surprise some people….just sayin’.

Big West

After that hideous debut, the furry rodents winning it all seems like a long shot now….

Big East

Maryland….who else?

The FMQ

So, the gophers screwed up what had been a perfect record so far.  I’m adding a couple of picks to the list I posted last week as there wasn’t a spread available yet (at least with the service I use) and I was also waiting for hi-jinks, suspensions, arrests, etc.

LSU @ Wiscy (+10)

So much of me wants to take a shot of Wiscy here it’s not even funny.  Especially after seeing the egg that the SEC favorite laid last night on their home field.  Still, the Hatter’s teams seem to start out strong and fade late….Granted, Wiscy was way up last year and handed the game to the Tigers….Revenge at home?

Take Wiscy and the 10 for $25

Ole Miss @ FSU (-4)

Ole Miss has had a lot of NOISE in the background this entire off-season. NCAA investigation that parallels the USC and Miami messes.  USC paid the ultimate price that they’re still recovering from and the U managed to skate on a technicality or that football program might have been wiped clean off the face of the earth.  But I digress….FSU starting a red-shirt QB gave me pause initially, but the last time FSU did that the QB won the Heisman.

Take FSU and lay the 4 for $25

The First FMQ For 2016!!!

The FMQ is BACK!

I know it’s close because the Michigan Football Parking Pass arrived in the mail yesterday!

And based on the fact that we have a GAME TONIGHT I figured I’d better post an FMQ!!  I’m getting goose bumps as I read through all the drivel and self-promotion blogs and everyone right now is undefeated and figuring out ways to win it all!

Some feedback from the Pre-Season Spectacular was that I didn’t include enough information about EVERY TEAM out there…Granted, I always try to do an overview of the National landscape and top 25, but my B1G centricity has been a little lacking, lately.  So, in order to appease the torch and pitchfork crowd that is demanding that the MMQ take a look at how the rest of the B1G finishes, here goes.

Let’s start with the B1G West.  For those of you that aren’t sure who’s in what division, I’ll list ‘em for ya’:

  1. Nebraska
  2. Minnesota
  3. Iowa
  4. Northwestern
  5. Wiscy
  6. Illinois
  7. Purdue

And look at that….I believe I’ll go with that as my prediction on how that division finishes.

The Cornsuckers were literally 5 plays away from 5 additional wins last season and that would have made them a 10 win team.  The UCLA destruction in the Bowl was a great segue into the 2016 season.  Riley has not let those last second losses get the team down, either.  In fact, it’s been a great motivational tool for the team that they HAVE TO FINISH everything they do – Practice, class, whatever.  I foresee Nebraska coming back into its own this season and they’ll also want a piece of that Title Action in Indianapolis.  I’m not sure what the floor is for the Cornsuckers, but 8 wins seems very doable (assuming they get past the Oregon Ducks) and the other 4 are kind of toss-ups.  So 10 wins is possible….

The Golden “Freeze!” Gophers have a schedule that looks like something only 2nd year Coach Clay could have dreamed up.  Not only do they NOT play Michigan, ohio and Sparty, but they have 7 home games, 5 road games and if they aren’t at least 8-1 (Iowa is right smack dab in the middle of the season) going into their last 3 games (Nebraska, Northwestern, Wiscy) I’d be a crying, sad little gopher fan…if I could ever bring myself to root for the Gophers.  So, I’m actually thinking the “little M” crowd might be ranked in the mid to low teens come November.  And if Nebraska is a 1 or 2 loss team, that’ll be a game to circle on the calendar.  And if they can win the last 2 out of 3…Hmmmmm.  Could the furry little rodents be in Indy this season?

Iowa is always a mystery.  Their schedule is manageable (they don’t leave Iowa until October 5th and that’s at Northwestern) and they have most of the tough games at home.  And they don’t play BlueBloods OSU or MSU.  But you never know what kind of Team Ferentz is going to field Year over Year…So I’m looking at this in the Up then Down trend.  Last season was so good for Iowa (except for that B1G Championship and the subsequent flop in the bowl game) that they are probably due to be a little down which might lead them to finishing strong, but not quite at the top of the heap.

All bets are off as to where Northwestern finishes if Fitzgerald puts a vintage Wildkitten team on the field this season.  The BTN crew seemed to like them when they visited camp (But then, who DOESN’T Gerry Dinardo like) and I’ve always respected Fitzgerald and what he’s accomplished at the Stanford of the East.  In fact, look for the Wildkittens to upset the Cornhuskers at home after an inspired win over ACC’s Duke.  If the Wildkittens start strong, they could be in the middle of the top 4 and in the hunt for a trip to Indy at the end of the season.

Wiscy hasn’t been the same Wiscy since Andersen left to be a Beaver.  Chryst is just an extension of Alvarez and I get the feeling that there’s un-happiness in Madison.  Not only that, but Wiscy hasn’t evolved on the offensive side of the ball as much as they need to.  That being said, I’m not saying they can’t come out and surprise people this season, but of the top 5 teams in the West, Wiscy winning the division would shock the MMQ the most….

Purdon’t.  How Hazell is still head coach I’ll never know.  With Sumlin on the Hot Seat at Texa A&M, Hazell will be lucky to keep his job if Purdue Alumnus Sumlin gets the ax….The temptation to pull a Michigan - Harbaugh and bring home a somewhat successful favorite son will loom huge for Purdue and they need people in the stands to help offset all the MONEY they are pumping into their facilities.  They need fans to fill the seats and they need them soon…

Illinois is dumpster fire and I’m not saying they’ll go o-fer on the season, but O-fer in B1G conference play is a real possibility….enuff said and typed…

The B1G East Division summary

  1.  Michigan
  2. Ohio
  3. Maryland
  4. Sparty
  5. Indiana
  6. Penn State
  7. Michigan recruiting Class of 2017
  8. Rutgers

What did you think?  That I was actually going to put somebody else in the top spot after I picked Michigan to win the B1G?  I know Herbstreit thinks Michigan is a season away, but there’s too many great seniors on this team to be “a Season Away”.  And Herbie didn’t watch and suffer through every Goddamn underthrown pass last season by Ruddock that should somewhat correct itself just ‘cause…and with Brown’s Badasses leading the way on Defense, well, I still like Michigan finishing in the top spot this season.

The ohio school for kids that don’t read so good will be right there at the end, but I have a feeling that there will be a blemish or two on the resume before the final game.  The Urban “Legend” Official Health Watch will officially begin after the Oklahoma upset and don’t be surprised if somebody else pulls off a miracle, also.  They will be thirsty for BLOOD in East Lansing and that will be a great game to watch…and Michigan is going to want some of its own revenge in the Shoe come November….

The Terps under new head coach Durkin is my sleeper for the East Division.  I almost had Indiana finishing 3rd, but they’re the Hoosiers, fergodsakes.  The Terps will have a taste of Har-Ball from Spring and Fall Camps and they will surprise some people this season.   IF you’re playing the Terps early (PSU, Gophers and Sparty) look out.

Sparty, Sparty, Sparty…The Terps and Sparty could easily flip-flop, but when I looked at what Sparty lost from last season and how close they were to losing a couple of games in the first 8 games of last season, well…I think it might turn into a long season for the Jolly Green Giants of East Lansing.  When they get to the meat of their early schedule (Domers, Wiscy, Indiana, BYU, Northwestern – in that order), I honestly feel like there might be a 50-50 situation happening there, or a 3-2 or 2-3 record looming…..  And I’ll go on record now and say that the Hoosiers, Domers and the Wildkittens really spoil things for Sparty early. Marcus Antonio will be on Heart Watch before October has ended and Michigan will come in with revenge on their minds.  I’m not kidding when I say that 4 losses for this year’s Spartan’s is possible…and maybe probable.

The Hoosiers could be higher on my list, but they are AT ohio, AT Northwestern, and AT Michigan.   I love Wilson and what he’s doing for that team, but that's a bunch of tough road games and three losses in the B1G is where I see them.

I can’t believe I have the Nittany Kittens this low, but looking at their schedule, it’ll be amazing if Penn State is above 0.500 going into October!  At Pitt and At Michigan is tough to manage early.  And you’ve got Temple in there, also.  Based on Franklin’s track record for managing QB’s and that fact that they’re starting a newbie, I think it’s another LONG season for PSU fans….

Michigan Recruiting Class of 2017 could easily take on and beat Rutgers.  If Illinois is a dumpster fire, Rutgers is a Tire Field fire….I don’t know what they’re doing in Jersey, but they better figure some things out quick if they ever want to have a chance in the B1G.

Great article on what it takes to be a Blueblood of College football.  I think ESPN pretty much got it right.  The only one I might have had a little higher on the list was Penn State, but I think some of the backlash from the last 30 years of history and the Sandusky thing have tarnished that ranking.  Without all that, I think PSU is a single digit Blueblood.

The FMQ

So, the last time I did this I finished with a Goose Egg, which is a great reason to NOT bet college football.  But with so many big games coming this weekend and next weekend, I have to get back into this and start with the imaginary $1,000 clams and see what happens and if I’m really as good of a prognosticator as I think I am!

Tonight!

Hawaii @ California (-19.5)

Have to bet this game because A:  It’s the first one and B: Hawaii continues East to the Big House next week and C:  It’s in AUSTRALIA!  You read that right, sports fans.  Hawaii and California trekked to the land down under to play football.  Can you say long flight, tired kids, and jet lag?  I’m taking the Bears and laying the points due to the fact that the Rainbows are really, really bad….

Take California and lay the 19.5 for $25

Thursday – September 1st

Oregon State @ Minnesota (-13)

The Gophers get an early test at home, but I have a feeling they’re going to show the Pac12 who’s boss.

Take the Gophers and lay the 13 for $25

Saturday, September 3rd

Western Michigan at Northwestern (-6)

The MAC favorite is going to Chicago, not as the annual macrifice, but to try and spoil things for the Purple Kitties early.  I’m nervous about this pick, but I’m going to say that the Kitties win and can’t cover…

Take Western and the 6 points for $50

Hawaii @ Michigan (-41)

If Hawaii wasn’t so bad, I’d take the points – BELIEVE ME. My first inclination WAS to take the points.  I’ve seen enough early Michigan games at the Big House to know trouble lurks….But I have a feeling Michigan might be busting at the seems by the time game time gets here to finally hit somebody – ANYBODY else.  And Harbaugh will have had a week to look at tape…and Hawaii won’t have anything to look at but Jet-Lag – both from coming home from Australia and flying to Michigan…and that’s very, very bad for the Rainbows…

Take Michigan and lay the 41 for $50

Oklahoma @ Houston (+10)

The upset pick for Saturday seems to be this one.  Everyone loves Houston.  I’m not totally sure and I usually like to go the opposite way of the money.  I know this line has moved so smart money is liking Houston and 2nd year head coach Hermann, but I’ll go the other way and take Stoops.

Take Oklahoma and lay the 10 for $25

UCLA @Texas A&M (-3)

Sumlin is coaching for his LIFE at A&M.  He needs this win BAD.  And at the new and improved home of the 12th man, I’ll take the Aggies and lay the points.

Take Texas A&M and lay the 3 for $50

USC @ Alabama (-10.5)

This spread made me scratch my head a little.  I had this game at around three scores of separation (17-19 points) and I was trying to figure out who knows what.   And it got me to thinking that maybe somebody knows more than I do in Vegas.  Therefore,

Take USC and the 10.5 for $25

Clemson @ Auburn (+7)

I have a feeling the Orange Tigers get a wake-up call early this season and have to learn that what you did last year is last year’s news.  Malzahn is another hot seat coach that would love to have an early scalp for this season…and he’s had an entire off-season to prepare.

Take Auburn at home and the 7 for $50

Sunday, September 4th

Domers @ Texas (+3.5)

This is the upset special of Labor Day Weekend!  I just can’t believe that Charlie Strong, who’s also coaching for his life, is going to let what happened in South Bend last season happen again.  New Offense for the Burnt Orange and a decimated Domer Defense should make it at least closer.  I know I could have egg on my face on this one, but

Take Texas and the 3.5 for $25
