Like It Needs Any More Build Up

As a preliminary, this guy is nuts….If you don’t want toclick the link, he spent $115,000 for the vanity plate “12THMNAN” in an online Texas DMV auction….Insane.  But he is donating to a War Veteran...So, maybe not so crazy after all....

In case you HAVEN’T heard, there’s two stories out this week.  One is in Sports Illustrated and the other on Yahoo Sports.  One is an incredibly unbelievable tale of payouts for performance, academic scandal, drugs and sex and the other one is about Alabama and several other players for SEC schools that took money from an agent “Coordinator/Concierge” for players at Alabama and other SEC schools.
To put it bluntly:  One of the articles is pure trash and while there may be some truth to it, most of the “named” sources were players that were either reprimanded or removed from the program altogether for academic reasons or violations of team rules.  On the other hand, the Yahoo article provides texts and proof and reports the facts.  Sad that an upstanding “news” agency, SI, appears to be trying to sell copy and garner hits on their website (That you have to sit through a COMMERCIAL for before you read the article) vs. simply reporting what was uncovered via good, investigative journalism.  But that’s not my point here today….
Here’s the thing:  Which program do you think the NCAA will come down on harder?  You guessed it:  Okie State will probably get hit with an investigation into whatever shenanigans that went on down there and Alabama will probably have nothing done to them, or receive a slap on the wrist at best, because, well, they’re Alabama.  And even if they did do something like “Take away their National Championships”, well, everyone knows that they did it on the field and they cheated doing it, but what does it matter if schools like Alabama are never going to do ANYTHING TO CHANGE IT and continue to flaunt the rules that everyone else is trying to live by?  And if its going on in the SEC, well, it’s happening everywhere.  It’s just the extent that is happening is the only question…
Which makes the entire entity of the NCAA a farce to begin with.  And the quicker some of these schools can get out of the problem of having to deal with the NCAA, the better.
Which leads me to today’s item of interest:  There has been a lot of chatter on some of the blogs about a “Division 4” of college football that would split from the NCAA and start playing by “Their Own Set Of Rules”, whatever that might mean.  But the jist of it is that the Power 5 conferences (B1G, SEC, PAC12, ACC, Big 12 and domers) would more or less thumb their collective noses at everyone else and set up a league where they would only play each other and that would then lead to an 8 team play-off with the traditional bowls.  (Orange, Rose, Sugar and Fiesta)  Now, I have no idea whether or not that would ever happen, but I’m starting to see where the college landscape is going and the powers that be are ticked off with having to share the pie that they created with the likes of Boy’s State and Northern Illinois when schools like that make it into a BCS bowl.  The big boys don’t like sharing….Their Attitude:  Too bad, so sad for the capable little up-starts that want to take on the world.

And while I’m not sure that’s fair (Another word which I’ve come to hate, by the way), is it fair that the elites in the collegiate football world (that isn’t built on a level playing field, anyway…Just like some schools have and warrant higher tuition) have to share the wealth?  What makes sense for everyone?  Can their be a "simple solution?

I dunno….but I’m starting to think this thing is going to change a lot sooner rather than later…The big boys don’t want to lose the money that TV and bowls generate and its looking a lot more like they are willing to pay athletes (because they can afford it) to keep a stranglehold on everyone else.

But all that isn’t why you’re reading here on Friday!  We’re here to make the picks for the weekend and there are some DANDY games to get some fantasy coin down on so let’s not waste any more time!

Washington @ the Illini (+9.5):  I was not going to touch this game and then I looked again at some stats and stuff like that and something caught my eye.  The Illini offense is doing good things and while I’m not saying they can win the game, at home I think they can keep it close…and they were good to me last week!
Take Illinois and the points for $35

Youngstown State @ Sparty (-27):  First of all, to get a spread THIS BIG, you need to assume that your offense can actually score.  And I'm not sure Sparty's offense has scored 27 points in two games COMBINED....So far, Sparty has shown me NOTHING that makes me believe that the offense is going to somehow magically fix itself this week.  And the Defense can’t always score points….Therefore,
Take Youngstown and the 27 for $25

Domers @ Purdue (+21):  Oh man, I SO WANT TO TAKE Purdue in this game and I would love to see the Domers come out flat after last week’s Under the Lights game….But, I can’t trust what they are calling “Football” now in West Lafayette…Therefore I will PASS….

Vandy @ USC(-13.5):   Here’s another one that I want to jump on the Vandy Underdog Wagon and I want to believe that Georgia exposed some things that the rest of the SEC is going to be able to use…Unfortunately, I don’t believe in Vandy enough….This will probably be the regret game of the week…I PASS….
UCLA (+4.5) @ Nebraska:  If Nebraska hadn’t laid that egg earlier a couple of weeks ago, I would be very inclined to jump all over them in a revenge situation at home.  But….I just can’t trust the children of the corn here….I PASS….

Louisville (-13) @ Kentucky:  Again, this spread seemed about right until I actually looked at what Western Kentucky did stat-wise to Kentucky and I have a feeling that Charlie Strong is going to try and get all the style points that he can against a weak SEC foe…and an SEC school that didn’t even give him a phone call when the job opened up…So,
Take Louisville and lay the 13 for $75

Tennessee @ the Quack Attack (-27.5):  Wow…I wanted to say Tennessee was getting better, but when you see a spread like this, it makes you realize that whatever the Cremesicles have done, it’s nowhere close to the level that the Ducks are playing at.  With the Ducks at home, this spread could get covered before halftime. I’ll
Take the Ducks and lay the 27.5 for $75

Ohio (-16) @ Cal:  Looked at this game a couple of different ways, but I don’t think the Bears are ready for what Urban Legend is bringing.  Even though I do believe that the suckeye defense is suspect, I believe the offense is now clicking.  It will take till the 4th quarter (unlike the Ducks above), but I think ohio covers…
Take ohio and lay the 16 for $40

Game of the Century XXXIII (or whatever) A&M(+9):  So, Satan is somehow a 9 point favorite IN College Station at Kyle Field, home of the 12th man…..Hmmm….I’m a smart guy…At least, I like to think I am.  I know that Satan has probably done nothing but figure out how to stop Johnny Football for however many days it’s been since they last played.  However, the B1G, the domers and everybody else that had to face D-Rob did all that stuff too…Sometimes scheme and coaching can’t beat superior talent…And Johnny Football wants this, as does Sumlin.   Therefore,
Take Texas A&M and the 9 for $40

Akron @ Michigan (-37.5):  I can’t believe I’m about to do this…But after looking at Akron’s stats and who they’ve played…God help them in Ann Arbor.  I really think this boils down to how long Hoke leaves the offensive starters in and how hard the 2 and 3 deep guys go after it.

Take Michigan and lay the 37.5 for $75

Gardner Gets a LOT of TD's to the Gallon!!!

GOOOOOOOOOD MONDAY MORNING!  It’s another beautiful bright, sunshiny day here in the great state of Michigan!  (Even though its not actually sunshining today!)

It’s Monday after a Domer (JEEZ I HATE THESE GUYS!) Victory and the MMQ is still smiling!  What is there to smile about?  Oh, Lets Count the Ways!

  1.  Gardner throws for 4 TD’s and rushes the "Lights" Out!
  2. Gallon catches 3 TD’s in a single game - and that’s a pretty elite group to be in at Michigan….And he didn’t do it against a nobody, either.
  3. 98 to 21…Legend to Legend!  That’s kind of cool….
  4. The Stats Sheet above is old but I couldn't find an updated version....Attendance is now 115,109.  The LARGEST EVER crowd to watch a college football game….
  5. The Defense holding the Domers to 23 points.  That wasn’t supposed to happen – The Domers were supposed to score at will on our depleted D….
  6. Gardner wearing 98.  Mixed feelings….More on that in a minute
  7. Kelly….Will have the Starring role in a  new movie called, “50 Shades of Purple”  The movie will explore the masochistic relationship between a coach and his underperforming QB….
  8. Fitz T….Finding a running game when we needed him.
  9. Gardner driving for a score when we REALLY needed him!
  10. It was a Big Game….
  11. Actually, IT WAS A REALLY BIG GAME!

So last first.  Why was it a REALLY, REALLY BIG GAME?  Well, Mr. Parsons was able to locate a “Really Big Flask” by Googling “Really Big Flask” and we now have the original Big Game and the “REALLY, REALLY BIG GAME!”  But I think the reason it was a Big Game is pretty obvious.  Bragging rights over the Domers for the next however many years that they couldn’t win the last one in the Big House.  Michigan establishing itself and launching into the Top 15.  But most importantly, we beat the hypocrites that were all rubbing their rosaries with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter and God once again said, “There’s a lot of other stuff to pray for.  Quit bothering me with this crap.  Oh by the way, I can’t stand your coach, either”

However, God did give the Domers a small ray of hope when Gardner had what can only be explained as a “WTF” moment for every fan in the Big House and threw an incredibly poor throw away pass at the wrong time to the wrong guy.

That hush you heard if you were watching on TV wasn’t the fault of the volume control on your set…The only other time I’ve heard that stadium that quiet was when Stewart threw a ball to Westbrook and I believe it was almost in THE EXACT SAME SPOT in the End Zone….Talk about the wrong kind of chills running up and down your spine.  The MMQ was thinking I picked a helluva 4th quarter to quit drinking ….And yes, the domers started to believe that all the rosary rubbing was going to pay off.  However, after Michigan’s offense went 3 and out on the ensuing drive, the Michigan D rose to the occasion and held the Domers to a Figgie.  I’m not saying that was the defensive stand of the game, but it certainly felt a lot better being up 4 then being tied at that point.  Taylor and Countess led what can only be described as an “Inspired” defense and more or less said…
”Nope – Not tonight.”

And then there was the next drive.  It had everything.  If the Defense rose to the occasion on the prior domer drive, well, the offense answered on their next drive.  Fuhgedabout the pass interference calls “saving” Michigan.  They were legit.  The domers were cheating all night and finally got called on it.  Gallon was frustrating everyone the Domers threw at him.

Hail to the Victors….Hail, Indeed.

To say that the stadium was loud during the defensive stands, on the scores, and when it was finally in the bag would be a bit of a slight to the definition of “Loud”.  Ear Shattering would be more appropriate.

Legends

I love the Legend thing…I really do.  I think it gives us a chance to honor players from prior generations and hearing Mark Harmon talk about Ole 98 really choked me up.  But, at the same time, they put 98 on a kid that has only played in 7 games to this point.  Not saying he’s not worthy, just sayin’….that’s all.  And what about Devin’s number and Devin trying to make his own Legend?  Let’s face it, he’s had more numbers at Michigan (7-12-98) than any other player that I can think of.  So, is that fair?

Truly mixed feelings for the MMQ on that level.

But, beating the Domers….What a feeling.  And of course getting to watch the brave fans dared to enter the big house wearing the Green-Blue-Gold-White…Whatever…come out after the game was oh so sweet…..

The next test?  Hard to say…Akron shouldn’t be much of a test and UConn is proving to be a non-starter.  The Gophers are in a continuous struggle….PSU on October 5th could be the next foreseeable hurdle.

The Rest of the Mess

Sparty vs. FSU:  Got to see some of this game on the BTN highlights and a repeat.  Sparty D once again outscored the offense.  I’m not sure that’s a great way to win football games.  Sparty needs to find a QB and figure out something better on offense besides whatever it is they are running…

Texas vs. BYU:  Mack Brown has not only moved up on the Hot Seat List, but he has now hired the former Defensive coordinator that oversaw the worst 3 years of defense at Michigan – Greg Robinson.  I’m not sure which is more unbelievable….600 yards given up to BYU and a lot of it on the ground or the hire….

Georgia vs Cocks:  Well, the Ole Ball Coach took one on the chin from the School he loves to abuse.  But the SEC East is still up for grabs and it’s early.  Best thing to come out of this game is another 1 loss SEC team early in the season.  I want to see a lot more of those which leads me to

Florida vs. Miami:  Hee-hee….Miami and Showers gets the last laugh in this one after Florida spent the week yakking about how this was no longer a rivalry for them…kind of like that Kelly idiot at the Domers….

Washington State vs. USC:  Speaking of Hot Seats, Lane Kiffin’s just got a whole lot warmer….When you are at USC, you CANNOT LOSE to the “W” Schools….That’s written down somewhere, I think….

Purple Kitty Kats vs. Syracuse:  The Purple Kitties cruise to a fairly easy win over what was supposed to be a big test for them in Syracuse.  Look out…Northwestern could be undefeated for quite awhile at this point….

SDSU vs ohio:  While not a remarkable game in any way, Braxton Miller went down.  And while that shouldn’t affect ANY of the near term games for the suckeyes, I’d really like to see him back before the end of the season…just the competitor in me….

Idle Thoughts From Saturday

-GRIDLOCK!  Not……We even arrived a little late at the tailgate and got our corner spot…
-Big Game was flowing!

-The Tailgate Chef looked to be in mid season form!

-I hate not being able to watch any of Game Day or any of the other games when I go to a game…
-Believe me, I’m not saying being in Ann Arbor is a bad experience.
-Quite the contrary.  It was an awesome game and an awesome time!
- Just something about being in my own basement with my remote in my hand….
-Is that wrong?
-I had another obligation that forced me to be up at 5:30 AM on Saturday…
-So not only was it a Big Game…It was a frickin’ LONG DAY..
-Stadium looks awesome under the lights…
-No Shadows
-Colors really pop on the green carpet….
-Jets were awesome pre-game.
-But I guess Michigan paid for it and I now know where some of that PSL money is going..
-I “Maized Out!” for the first time ever…
-I can’t believe I didn’t wear the home Blue….But hey, I don’t want to be one of those old curmudgeon alumni that can’t change…
-Gallon’s incredible catch and ensuing TD run!
-Half time was really cool….They should show more halftime show’s on TV….The junkies can flip to another station for updates and scores around the league…
-Gardner is having a day…Thank God…Oh no, wait – I meant, “THANK YOU FIELDING H. YOST!” – Ufer
-He was watching from somewhere, of that I’m sure.
-And he had to be in the same agony that we are all in when Devin threw that pick 6…
-Amazingly, the crowd hung in there….
-Could it be that everyone KNOWS that the 4th quarter in a Michigan – Domer game isn’t over till the clock literally says 0:00?
-COULD BE!

The Hot Seat

Once again, after two weeks of games, there are some coaches that are going to be feeling the heat from their fan bases and their administrations.  Two big jumps this week…but more on that in a minute.

I was looking around for a Hot Seat Mascot this week and stumbled across this candidate.  I vaguely remembered seeing her on “The Big Break”.  Yes, I sometimes watch the Golf Channel.  Sue me.  Without further ado, the Hot Seat Mascot nominee for week # 2:  Blair O’Neal!  She’s a PGA tour golfer…And she’s HOT!

Once again…Shake ups “R” us on the Hot Seat Ranking…

Hot Seat Rank

  1. Mack Brown:  Loses to BYU and cans his Defensive Coordinator to hire…GERG?  Seriously…If I’m a Texas Fan, I don’t know what I’m madder about….
  2. Lane Kiffin:  Losing to Wazoo just might be a fire-able offense at USC..
  3. Ferentz:  I can’t believe the Iowa fan base isn’t screaming louder for his head…
  4. Pelini:  Husker Nation HAS TO BE GETTING TIRED of these close games…AND NO DEFENSE!
  5. Weiss:  Why not?
  6. Mullens:  You can’t lose the opener at MSU and not get some heat….
  7. Beamer….Yes, you played the number 1 team…but you lost the way you USED to beat Number 1 teams….
  8. Muschamp:  Gatorland has to be pissed off at this…You don’t lose to the ACC if you’re an SEC team….
  9. Brian Kelly:  Hee-hee….HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!
  10. Stoops – Kentucky….You can’t lose to Petrino in that game….and that badly…
 FMQ Betting Results:

Okay, so we got off to a great start and this week we suffered some small losses, but we were $14 to the good when it was all said and done.  The picture is getting a lot clearer with respect to who to LAY points with and who to TAKE points with.  I might have jumped the gun a little early on some teams, but next week will be interesting.

Why I hate the Domers....The Hits Just Keep On Coming!!!

I hear from a lot of friends and fans of the blog that I have an “abnormal” hate for the Domers (JEEZ I HATE THESE GUYS!) and that hate should only be brought out for Sparty and the school from ohio….

Well, let’s see….Brian Kelly goes on record saying that, “Michigan isn’t one of our Big, Traditional Rivalries….”

RIIIIIIGHTTTTT!!!!!!

And USC is just a silly little school that used to produce okay tailbacks….And PSU is just a small institution that used to know how to make a player into something called a linebacker….and…well, I could go on.  But Brian “Dolt” Kelly needs to check and see if he can hear the own BS that comes out of orifice he calls a mouth on his face on occasion…

Speaking of “Dolts”, get a load of this:

Now, I’m not saying the Domers can’t spell…NOPE-NOPE-NOPE….Not the FMQ.  The MMQ might go so far as to say something like that….So what do the Domers do?  They ARE GOING TO SELL THESE CUPS AT THE HOME GAMES UNTIL THEY ARE SOLD OUT!  The FMQ will go out on a limb here and say that if I had been the head of PR in Domerland (which, by the way…I wonder what color the sky is there?), those cups might have found their way to Belize, along with the Ass Hat that proofed the spelling….You know, when you need to get rid of a problem, Better Call Saul.  And Walter White….

But I’m sure the PR figured, “Hey, one day this will be a collector’s item worth BIG BUCKS on e-bay…And we could say a couple a thousand of them and sell them 10 years from now and turn a profit!”
Idiots…..
And finally, here’s a nice little summary that some Domer Jack-Ass put together in a totally unbiased fashion.  Read it if you dare, but I will state right now that many of the facts are taken out of context and there were multiple reasons (and some of them are still valid) as to why Michigan and the University of Chicago did not want the Domers in the Big 10 early on.

Domer Michigan History Part I
Domer Michigan History Part II
Domer Michigan History Part II

I have offered up numerous incidents of how the current fan base, students and administration have an incredibly poisonous view of the Michigan Wolverines and the B1G in general, even though the events of yesteryear are far behind us.  While it is what makes the rivalry great, it also makes it that much easier to hate ‘em right back.   In fact, when the time comes and I have to meet my maker, if I’m lucky enough, and he asks why I hated the Domers so much and that my hatred may be something that keeps me outside of the pearly gates, well, I guess I will have some serious thinking to do….

But until then, I can hate them with every bone in my body and every blood cell that pumps through my veins…

And yeah…I hate the suckeyes and Sparty, too.

Just for fun, let’s review some of the series most recent memories…

Timeline – Michigan vs. Domers

1.       Let’s start with the most recent Big Game first:  2011  Under the Lights!  The beauty of winning a game like this in this fashion is it completely and unequivocally rips the hearts (and balls) off the Domer fans that wear the Blue and Gold is when Michigan beats the Domers in the last seconds….heh-heh….kind of like when they used to do that to us years ago with some kickers and field goals….But De-Rob, Gallon and Treezy all made history Under the Lights in the last 1:41 and it was truly magical.  If there is a God, he was there and he was enjoying it.

2.      2010:  Denard Breaks Free!  If there is another game where the Domers figure, “It’s in the bag!” and then, suddenly, almost inexplicably, its not…well, its got to be this game and De-Rob breaking one off for 75 yards in the 4th quarter.   I’ll never forget this as the previous scoring play was a long bomb and NBC took the opportunity to show a rainbow that had appeared at the same moment.  They forgot to note that the rainbow appeared to the NORTH of the stadium….Over MICHIGAN!  Another great point in this game is D-Rob and 500 yards of offense…hee-hee…

3.      2009:  Oh Tate!  While he wasn’t with us that long, once again a frosh QB with a throw to Greg Matthews rips the hearts out of the collective Irish throats and leaves them wondering….”What in the Hell just happened????”

4.      A 2nd 38-0 Game Can’t Be a BAD Thing!  Circa 2007…..While both teams were O-fer on the season, Michigan’s losses were much, much better than the stumbling Irish.  This game wasn’t even close and was probably the final undoing of C-Weis…..Even though he coached another couple of seasons….

5.      2006:  The Mighty Quinn GOES DOWN!  This had to be one of the most lopsided blow-outs of the series, with the Domers FAVORED at home by a TD.  I remember studying the players and games prior and I had NO IDEA where Vegas was getting that number from.  I honestly believed that the wise-guys were looking at last year’s 2005 Wolverines when setting the line….2006 was different.  And this game was the statement of that difference!  Super Mario had 3 TD’s on the day from Chad Henne and all talk of “Quinn for Heismann” ended.

6.      38-0 … 2003 Style!  This was another single digit spread game at the Big House and I wasn’t entirely sure where that spread had come from, either.  Again, after reviewing the initial games, both teams had strengths and weaknesses.  But Lloyd fixed his a LOT quicker than Losingham could even begin to identify his…..

7.      1997  21-14.  This win was sweet and it was a lot closer than the score indicated.  The Domers had shots in the North End Zone late in the game…Three shots if I’m not mistaken and the 1997 defense led by Charles Woodson, Glenn Steele, jones, Ray and others took command of that game and came into their own.  The Domers can point to this game as the beginning of their end for the next decade….
So, yeah, I hate the Domers.

But I LOVE IT when we beat them!

On to this week’s picks!  I’m going all over the place this week due to the fact that spreads are HUGE and I’m still not sure where things stand for all teams.   One game does not make statistical databases.  So, seeing as how we’re in the green, let’s spread it around and see what happens.  This goes against our initial premise of a slow grind….But hey, I’m playing with house money now!

OSU (-27.5) vs. SDSU:  I watched part of the Buffalo – ohio game and while the suckeyes didn’t look bad, they made a lot of silly mistakes.   I hate to do it, but my guess is Urban Legend fixes that in short time and the suckeyes come out rolling in this one….
Take the suckeyes and lay the 27.5 for $75

Okie State (-26) vs. Texas San Antonio Somebody….:  Look, Okie State’s DEFENSE might be able to come out and hang 26 on this team.  I have a feeling that the Cowboys go for style points this week.
Take Okie State and lay the 26 for $75

USC @ Georgia (-3):  I can’t fully understand how a team that got shellacked by a team the prior year (35-7) is somehow this season a 3 point favorite at home.  I mean, I get it’s a revenge game….But still….So what does Vegas know again that I don’t?  I’m so tempted to take the Gamecocks here and the 3….so I will PASS

Oregon (-22) @ Virginia:  I actually went, “REALLY?????” when I saw this spread and kind of did a double take.  I mean, this is Oregon at Virginia.  Oregon who was a Stat Monster last year and went double digits against the number…..Yeah, If I'm a Duck, I’m liking me some Cavalier Meat on Saturday….
Take the Quack Attack and lay the 22 for $75

Western Kentucky (+12) @ Tennessee:  I haven’t picked on the cremesicles yet this year, but Bobby Petrino has already beat 1 SEC team and my guess is he isn’t going to let this SEC team get that far out in front of him.  I like the Hilltoppers and the points in this one.
Take WKU and the 12 for $40

Cincinnati (-7) @ Illinois:  Wow…A B1G team getting points at home from a Beast team?  Is that even possible?  While Tubberville’s Bearcats DESTROYED Purdue last week, I want to believe the Illini aren’t the pushovers that the Boilermakers are….Therefore
Take the Illini and the 7 for $25

Navy @ IU (-12.5) :  This spread made me sit up a little in my seat when I saw it.  First, I didn’t realize that IU was returning 19 starters.  2nd, any team that hangs 75 points on someone is going to get the FMQ’s attention and more than likely a little cash thrown their way come the next game.  So, that being said,
Take the Hoosiers and lay the 12.5 for $25

Domers @ Michigan (-3.5):  I normally love Michigan as the dog in this one, but alas, they are the favorite.  However, I’m pretty sure that’s how the team is looking at themselves, as the dog,  this year in this game.  After last year’s South Bend fiasco and 6 turnovers (let’s not forget 5 INT’s in a row), all Michigan has to do is make sure they hang on to the damn ball and they will have a chance….I’m not sure the Domer defense is that good and Rees is, well…..Rees.
Take Michigan and lay the 3.5 for $40

What A Difference A Home Opener Makes!

Talk about your change of venue for a Home Opener…Last year on Labor Day Weekend, Michigan came out of JerryWorld licking its wounds after a 'Bama Beating and wondering if they would be any good….or how many games they could win in 2012…

And eventually they won and were decent…with a lot of hard work and excellent coaching.

While the RESULT for this Home Opener was completely different, and while the uneducated among us will look at the score and simply state that everything is right with the world, the more knowledgeable of you know where I’m going with today’s post….

I’m not sure Michigan is 50 points better than the Chippies.  Actually, they are NOT 50 points better than the Chips… I’m not saying Michigan didn’t earn it, but I am saying that the Chips were in a tough spot from the get go when the 1st string QB and their 1st string tailback went down with injury and didn’t return.  In fact, based on that info, I’m depressed that the Chippers somehow found a way to get 9 on the board…..

So, while I enjoyed the win, I’m scratching my head in regards to what kind of team this is going to be.

Hoke was honest at the end of the game.  Too many mistakes.  And he couldn’t find one “good” thing to talk about as he was leaving the field.  Those were kind of my sentiments exactly and I’m glad this team got that game under their belt before the Domers come in Saturday.  Of course, the Domers got their warm-up game too, but more on that later and on Friday…..The FMQ will have something special, so tune in!

Were there bright spots?  Absolutely.  Blocking the punt…..Gardner’s TD throws….Were there concerns?  Gardner’s INT’s and the complete lack of a tailback running game that at some point, if you’re planning to run a pro-style offense….Well, you’re gonna need a tailback that can rush “EFFECTIVELY” for 100 yards….And it becomes even more necessary to get that going with a defense that still needs to mature…

Michigan is a 3 point favorite Saturday….I for one, am not seeing it yet….It was a costly victory as back-up TB Johnson went down with a season ending injury…And Toussaint hasn’t shown me a lot yet…

 I’m nervous…Right now.

The Rest of the Mess

USC vs. UNC:  The FMQ was spot on with this pick and it was a great Thursday Night Kick-off to the rest of the weekend.  The Ole Ball Coach had the Cocks ready to play and UNC simply isn’t there yet…..

Sparty – WMU:  This game, I will admit, I was not able to see to the end.  The Sparty readers who made it to the game I hope made it home safe and sound at what was probably a lot closer to Dawn than it was to the middle of the night, assuming you stayed for the entire game.  Sparty’s Defense:  A  Offense:  Inc…..

Clemson  - Georgia:  Well, the ACC is proving that the SEC elites aren’t that great and managed to somehow get one in the win column.  Good, close game that more or less puts Clemson in the Driver’s seat of running the table…They should move up the polls nicely as the weeks wear on.

Domers  - Temple:  The Domers came out EN FUEGO and then they seemed to forget that they were actually playing football…I dunno if that was all a disguise for this week, but it seems like they truly started having issues and Temple was actually able to hang with them after some adjustments….It was tough to watch both games (Michigan and the Domers) but from what I saw, if Michigan contains early, well, the Domers may have issues Saturday.

ohio – Buffalo:  I’m more and more convinced that the the suckeyes lose 1 this year to someone they shouldn’t.  Defense is too young and inexperienced and I’m pretty sure everyone has at least figured out a way to slow down the ohio offense, even if they cannot stop it…..

Bama – Hoakies:  Beamer has to be thinking, “Man….I’m getting too old for this S@#$!%...”  I mean, when a team that used to pride itself on special teams is more or less demolished on Special Teams and lack of defense…well….It’s time Beamer thought about hanging up the whistle.

Cornhuskers – Cowboys:  This one was closer than ANYONE thought it would be….I was surprised to see that the Cowboys were able to come in and HANG ON and almost upset what is supposed to be a contender in the Legends division..Not to mention that they had over 600 yards of offense???  And Pelini was a Black Shirt Guy???  The whispers (and seat) are getting hotter for Pelini’s head….Will be an interesting season if the Huskers don’t finish in the top 2 of the Legends…And with that D…well, it’s going to be tough.

LSU – TCU:  I couldn’t help but wonder what we will see from the Hatter for the rest of the season if he has to pass the football….It will be an interesting SEC race indeed….

Idle Thoughts From Saturday

-HERE WE GO!
-I think EVERYONE is suffering from first game jitters…
-Gardner looked better off the bench last year….
-Do you think it changes when you change to the starter vs. coming off the bench?
-I think you really have to want it when you’re a starter.
-Coming in when nothing is expected of you takes a ton of pressure off…
-Hopefully, after that opening INT, DG gets over that…
-I miss Kovacs….But I did see Jake Ryan running out of the tunnel and touching the banner..
-He looks healthier than an October return….Just saying.
-BLOCK THAT PUNT!
-That was awesome!   Maybe Michigan is finally focusing on special teams?
-Sparty’s HALFTIME didn’t start till midnight…For anyone that stayed up that late to watch..
-Bama is good….God, I get tired of saying that.
-Johnny Football is getting under everyone’s skin…
- So why did all these same people vote him for the Heismann?
-What’s with the finger rub thing?
-And when will the NCAA put a stop to that?
-Or will they simply look the other way and sell their OWN memorabilia…
-Is this just an attempt to take him down so he can be built back up later?
-I don’t want Sumlin’s job this year…Johnny Football has to be a handful inside and outside of the locker room.
-On top of that the pressure to win in the SEC is immense…
-Cornhuskers look weak….What’s up with that?
-Iowa?  Seriously?
-Indiana hangs 75 points on the board – that’s a big deal…I don’t CARE who it was against…
-Tell me the last time an Indiana team hung 75 on ANYONE that wasn’t in Basketball uniforms…Anyone???
-Purdon’t is letting the B1G down and should turn in their B1G Football Card…..
-I don’t care if it’s a new coach…only scoring 7 on Cincinatti?
-Why can I never spell Cincinnati right?  I hate that City…Okay not the city…just the way they spell their name…
-Louisville and FSU take care of business to shut down the weekend….
-FSU and Louisville could make nice runs this year…
-Get used to hearing the name “Jameis Winston” and “Heismann” in the same sentence…
-What’s with the FCS schools beating FBS Schools?  I mean, I usually expect Michigan to lead the way in Foorball trends…But I didn’t think the HORROR would start a trend…
-Will this eventually lead to the obvious conclusion that THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to be gained by playing and beating a lesser opponent?
-But everything to lose!

 The Hot Seat

Well, the Hot Seat Mascot of the Year voting gets underway this week with our 2nd weekly nominee.  I have to admit that this one of the better things that the MMQ gets to do on a weekly basis, and as always, your comments and suggestions for Hot Seat Mascots are always welcome!  The MMQ likes to give the people what they want…and without further ado, here’s this week’s Hot Seat Mascot Nominee:  Amanda Marcum Enfield!

WHO????  And why does she look familiar?  Well, she’s an ex supermodel for one and She’s the wife of the guy that coached Florida Gulf Coastal in the NCAA tournament…I thought she was hot then and it hasn’t changed!  But again, because we use a democratic process (unlike our US Government), you guys decide!

There’s a lot of shake-ups in the HOT SEAT Ranking this week…so you need to pay attention!

Hot Seat Rank

  1. Ferentz:  I can’t believe the Iowa fan base isn’t screaming louder for his head…
  2. Pelini:  Husker Nation HAS TO BE GETTING TIRED of these close games…AND NO DEFENSE!
  3. Bill Stewart:  Winning the Big 12 and then losing AT HOME TO A DIVISION II School doesn’t make good bookends…GO BISON!
  4. Mack Brown:  No longer number 1 on the Hot Seat…But UT’s first loss will have the FireBrown websites burning up…
  5. Lane Kiffin:  Ditto for Kiffin…
  6. Weiss:  Why not?
  7. Mullens:  You can’t lose the opener at MSU and not get some heat….
  8. Richie Richt:  Yep….Losing the opener to Clemson gets you back on the list…but I’m convinced he has naked AD photos somewhere and will never get canned…
  9. Beamer….Yes, you played the number 1 team…but you lost the way you USED to beat Number 1 teams….
  10. Stoops – Kentucky….You can’t lose to Petrino in that game….and that badly…

 FMQ Betting Results:

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A FAST START (HOPEFULLY!) MAKES!  Wow…I had to go back and review the stats, but we haven’t had a 4 out of 5 opening weekend with a parlay come home….EVER.

That’s kind of a nice way to kick things off….Doncha’ think?

UNC @ the Gamecocks of USC (-11):  Cocks take care of the Tar Heels in the 2nd half and cover easily….
Take USC and lay the 11 for $50
WIN!! Bank $95

WMU @ SPARTY (-28.5):  Like I said, Sparty dominated on Defense…but what is that, exactly, that they are doing on offense?
Take WMU and the 28.5 for $50
WIN!!  Bank $95

Bama vs Va Tech (+19):  Beamer should hang it up….When Bama only gets 200 yards of offense but finds a way to score 35 points?  It’s over….
Take Bama and lay the 19 for $50
WIN!!  Bank $95

Miss St @ Okie State (-13):  Okie State may get a lot of play from the FMQ this year…I like what I see.
Take Okie State and lay the 13 for $25.
WIN!! Bank $47.50

CMU @ MICHIGAN (-31.5):  Heh-heh….OOOPS!
Take CMU and the 31.5 for $25
LOSE….Didn’t see the starters injuries coming….But who could have?

And what would week 1 be without a little parlay?  A 3 way pays 6 to 1.   Let’s go with our best bets:
Bama – USC – WMU for $20
WIN!!!  Bank  $120

Starting Bank:     $780
Total Win:           $452.50
Bank:                    $1232.50
