Patterson Is An Eligible Wolverine!
Frankly, I’m surprised.
And that’s not easy to do!!!
I really believed that Patterson
& Michigan (Harbaugh) were going to get screwed in the Patterson
Eligibility fight. It made too
much sense for the Idiots In Indy to simply sit on their hands, fall back on the archaic
rule book and not do anything with the exception of saying, “Hey, these are the
rules. A player transferring under
any circumstances has to sit for a season.
Period.”
But they didn’t do that. In fact, they ruled in favor of all players transferring
from Ole Miss and stated that they would all be eligible!
AMAZING!
Which, now, as Wojo
kind of stole the MMQ’s thunder on this topic, puts everything on Harbs.
And I do mean EVERYTHING.
Patterson was the # 1 “Dual
Threat” recruit in the country in 2015 (overall # 2 QB Recruit behind Georgia’s
Eason) and he finished one season as the number 3 QB in the SEC in passing
efficiency. And while he was surrounded by some decent players at Ole Miss,
he
had NOTHING like the talent that he’ll be playing with at Michigan.
Patterson DID have an offensive system that
was more honed to his dual threat ability at Ole Miss, something that Harbaugh
is going to have to look at and adjust to if he wants to succeed with Patterson. That much is clear. (What I would give to have RichRod back calling the
plays with this guy!!! – Wait, Rodriguez is looking for a gig, isn’t
he???)
Right now, for 2018, the Ole’
MMQ sees 2 MAJOR ROAD BLOCKS.
Harbaugh’s ability to change and
the 2018 Schedule.
The first Road Block: Can Harbaugh be flexible?
He’s had an off-season of self-reflection
and that’s probably come from three seasons of finishing 3rd in the
East and most recently, finishing 8-5 and realizing that somethings aren’t
working right. So, the question
remains: What can Harbaugh do to change
the status quo and can he also change himself?
From what we’ve seen from
Harbaugh so far, it’s his way or the highway when it comes to the offense. Either learn it and live it, or he’ll move
on. I mean, he has been successful with
two QB’s in college and the NFL (Luck and Kaepernick), but his legend as a “QB
Whisperer” is starting to fade, even with the one season success of
Jake Ruddock. And I don’t think you
want to waste a resource like Patterson by being stubborn and mule headed. Set up the offense to play to Patteron’s
strengths.
Michigan’s defense is one of the
best in the country. Get
the offense into the Top 5-10 and you’ll have something special taking place in
2018. Patterson SURE SEEMS TO THINK
something special can happen and if it does, well, he might have bigger
plans after this season:
It is important a viable
No. 2 emerges, especially if Patterson indeed is one-and-done at Michigan. He
certainly talks like someone with big plans, and isn’t bashful about declaring
them.
“I would have stayed at Ole Miss if it wasn’t for the situation we were
in,” Patterson said. “I can live with throwing an interception in the national
championship game or in the playoff … but I don’t know if I could have lived
with not even being able to get a chance to compete for one. Watching Michigan
all last year, and with the guys we’ve got coming back on defense, I feel like
we’ve got a really good shot at doing that.”
So the kids got clock-weights, I’ll
give him that.
NFL draft Experts have Patterson
as the #1 QB in the Draft for 2019. I’m
not buying any of that until the time comes, but who knows?
And there’s the 2nd Road
Block: Michigan does NOT have a
favorable schedule with the domers, sparty and the suckeyes ALL ON THE ROAD
(AGAIN THANKS BRANDICTATOR AND JIM DELANEY!).
Even the most optimistic of prognosticators (yours truly) doesn’t
believe that gauntlet can be run unscathed.
But 1-loss should at least keep Michigan in the National Title
discussion and, depending on where the loss falls, in the B1G Title discussion
– assuming they have the stats to back them up.
FWIW: Michigan was a 3-point Dog in South Bend
before the Patterson announcement. They
are now a 1-point favorite.
But it’s a long way to September…
However, I always reflect back
to 1997 and the feeling I had when I didn’t think the Wolverines had any chance
with that schedule, either. So
there’s another time I was wrong…
And wouldn’t a little Karma going
Michigan’s way be nice for once?
Was this decision the beginning
of that Karma?

The Super Streaks go to hell in a handbasket.
Granted, they were due to end as both sports are not meant to be
“dominated” all the time and a 60% success rate is actually pretty good. Still,
I would have preferred they got through last weekend unscathed and not had me
looking like the idiot that calls out, “Hey, we’ve got a no hitter happening
here!”
Anyway, I expect Post Season fireworks for both these teams if
they can get on a roll.
Largest Draft Snub: Hurst
A bunch of experts predicted that Mo Hurst would drop from the 1st
round in the draft to either 2nd or 3rd, but for Hurst to
drop to the 5th round because of a heart condition that he’s played
with his entire career at Michigan? That’s
crazy. And what’s even worse is
that the Lions had a shot at him in
BOTH THE 4th (traded up and took D’Shawn Hand who graded out WAY
BELOW Hurst) and 5th rounds and passed both times.
I frankly thought all these grades were
VERY GENEROUS.
I’ve said for years that I’m going to stop wasting my time on the
Detroit Lions. This might actually be
the season that happens. Idiots seem to
land in the front office that don’t have a clue. I was giving this New England clown (Quinn) the
benefit of the doubt, but now, I’ve lost my patience.
May the Lions forever dwell in the NFL basement of quagmired teams that will
never figure it out.
Oh…They already are. So, there’s that take.
The Draft – And The 37
Underclassment Not Drafted or Signed
This has turned into a bit of a story
due to the fact that of the 106 who declared, 37 went unsigned.
While I understand that a majority of the
underclassmen did get drafted, these 37 guys are kind of shit’s creek if
they can’t get a tryout or a look from an NFL roster. The NFL needs to adopt a strategy similar to
the NBA of having a “Junior Combine Day” where they can all attend and
get a clue as to what type of grade they earned and how that would transfer
into the draft.
Obviously, there’s still a lot of kids
getting bad advice and worse, listening to said advice instead of looking at
the pure numbers (only 256 players get drafted in the NFL draft). Stay for the full 4 years if there’s any
doubt about where you might get drafted (especially if it’s not in the 1st
3 rounds). That’s the best
advice you’ll ever get from anyone.
